Chapter 2 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE DOOR

“And if Lorenzo discovers the truth?”

The question hung in the narrow study.

Sophia stood frozen beside the dresser, one hand still resting on the polishing cloth.

Behind her, Emma quietly pushed a blue crayon across the carpet.

Vivien answered first.

“He won't.”

Marco's voice was lower.

“You don't know that.”

“I know Lorenzo.”

Sophia slowly moved toward the door.

She wanted to leave.

Every instinct told her to take Emma and disappear.

But before she could reach the handle, Vivien spoke again.

“That's why the wedding has to happen first.”

Sophia stopped.

Marco didn't answer.

Vivien continued.

“Once the marriage is official, the baby is his legal heir. My father will accept the alliance. The board will accept it. Everyone will.”

“And Lorenzo?”

“He'll accept his child.”

Something in Marco's silence frightened Sophia more than Vivien's words.

Then he finally spoke.

“You said the baby was mine.”

“It is.”

“You said you loved me.”

“I do.”

“And you're still planning to marry him.”

Vivien's voice became cold.

“Love doesn't build empires, Marco.”

Sophia's heart pounded.

Then Emma dropped her crayon.

The small sound seemed enormous.

Both voices inside the study stopped.

Sophia grabbed Emma's hand.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Emma looked up.

“Mommy?”

“Quiet.”

They slipped through the hallway.

Sophia didn't breathe until they reached the servants' staircase.

Once inside their small apartment above the east wing, she locked the door.

Emma looked at her mother.

“Are you scared?”

Sophia forced a smile.

“A little.”

“Why?”

Sophia knelt.

“Because Mommy heard something she wasn't supposed to hear.”

Emma hugged her rabbit.

“Is Uncle Lorenzo bad?”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

“Is Aunt Vivien bad?”

Sophia hesitated.

“I don't know.”

That was the truth.

Vivien wasn't a monster.

She was a woman who wanted power, security, and the future she believed she deserved.

Marco wasn't a monster either.

He was a man who had spent nineteen years proving his loyalty to Lorenzo while secretly betraying him.

That made everything worse.

Sophia knew what powerful men did when betrayed.

She also knew what happened to women who stood between powerful men and their families.

She decided she needed proof before saying anything.

Not suspicion.

Proof.

The next morning, she returned to Vivien's suite.

The room looked normal.

Perfume on the dresser.

Flowers by the window.

A silk robe folded over a chair.

Nothing suggested the conversation Sophia had overheard.

Then she noticed a photograph.

It was tucked beneath a jewelry box.

Sophia had seen it before.

Vivien and Marco standing beside a marina in New Jersey.

They were smiling.

Too close.

Sophia slipped the photograph into her apron pocket.

She immediately regretted it.

But she needed something.

Something Lorenzo couldn't dismiss as gossip.

That afternoon, Emma was coloring in the nursery when Lorenzo unexpectedly walked in.

He carried a small wooden box.

“What are you drawing?”

Emma held up the paper.

“Rabbit.”

Lorenzo looked at the crooked gray animal.

“I think your rabbit looks better than mine.”

Emma smiled.

“You can't draw.”

Lorenzo laughed.

Sophia watched from the doorway.

For a man feared by hundreds, Lorenzo was surprisingly gentle with children.

Emma suddenly asked, “Are you going to have a baby?”

Lorenzo smiled.

“I hope so.”

“Is it a boy?”

“We don't know yet.”

Emma thought about it.

“Can I see him?”

Lorenzo crouched.

“If you want.”

Emma nodded seriously.

“Okay.”

Then she looked at Sophia.

Something about her mother's expression made her stop.

Sophia immediately said, “Why don't you show Uncle Lorenzo your rabbit?”

Emma held up the drawing again.

Lorenzo smiled.

But his eyes moved to Sophia.

“You look worried.”

Sophia lowered her gaze.

“I'm tired.”

“That's not what I asked.”

She said nothing.

Lorenzo studied her for another second.

Then he handed Emma the wooden box.

“I brought this for you.”

Emma opened it.

Inside was a tiny silver bracelet with a rabbit charm.

Her eyes widened.

“For me?”

“For you.”

Sophia felt tears sting her eyes.

Lorenzo stood.

“She reminds me of Michael.”

Sophia looked at him.

That sentence told her everything.

He still carried guilt over her husband's death.

He had never forgotten Emma.

That made what she had overheard even harder.

Lorenzo walked away.

Sophia looked at the photograph hidden in her apron.

She knew she couldn't remain silent forever.

But she needed to know exactly what Marco and Vivien were planning.

That evening, she followed Marco.

He left the mansion through the west entrance and drove alone.

Sophia stayed far behind.

He stopped at a small private clinic.

Twenty minutes later, Vivien arrived.

Sophia watched from across the street.

Vivien entered.

Marco followed.

They stayed inside for almost an hour.

When they came out, Marco was holding a small envelope.

Vivien touched his arm.

Then they kissed.

Sophia's stomach turned.

She raised her phone.

Took one photograph.

Then another.

She returned to the mansion before either of them noticed.

That night, she hid the pictures inside Emma's old storybook.

But there was one thing she didn't understand.

Why would Vivien need a private clinic if everyone believed she was already pregnant?

The answer came the next morning.

A nurse's badge was visible in one of Sophia's photographs.

The clinic specialized in prenatal records.

Sophia enlarged the image.

There was a patient number.

Not a name.

She wrote it down.

Then she froze.

The number matched a receipt she had seen in Vivien's room weeks earlier.

The receipt wasn't for a pregnancy test.

It was for a procedure.

Sophia stared at the paper.

Then she whispered:

“What are you hiding?”

Before she could investigate further, Emma ran into the room.

“Mommy!”

Sophia turned.

Emma held up her new bracelet.

“Look!”

The tiny rabbit charm had a small engraved number on the back.

Sophia's expression changed.

It was the same number from the clinic receipt.

Emma had no idea what it meant.

But Sophia did.

May you like

Someone had deliberately connected the child, the bracelet, and the clinic.

And suddenly she wasn't sure whether Vivien's secret was simply about the baby's father anymore.
