Plot twist

Chapter 5 - MICHAEL'S LOCKER

Sophia held the key.

For three years, she had believed Michael had died carrying every secret he had ever known.

Now she was standing inside the Duca mansion with a key bearing a name she had never heard before.

Bellini.

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Did Michael ever mention Elena?”

“No.”

“Did he ever mention your family?”

“Not like this.”

Marco leaned against the desk.

“Michael knew more than he told you.”

Sophia's voice tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he was protecting you.”

She looked at him.

“From what?”

Marco didn't answer.

Lorenzo did.

“From my family.”

The next morning, Lorenzo arranged for the storage locker to be opened.

He didn't bring armed men.

He brought only Marco, Sophia, and one trusted security officer.

Sophia carried Emma's rabbit in her bag.

She didn't know why.

Perhaps because she needed something familiar.

The locker was beneath an old commercial building in Queens.

The brass key turned.

The door opened.

Inside were boxes.

Photographs.

Receipts.

Letters.

A small wooden chair.

A child's blanket.

And a battered suitcase.

Sophia froze.

“That suitcase belonged to Michael.”

She recognized the broken brass zipper.

Lorenzo didn't touch anything.

“Take your time.”

Sophia opened the suitcase.

Inside was a photograph.

Michael standing beside a woman.

Elena.

And between them was a baby.

The same baby from Antonio's photograph.

Sophia's hands shook.

Behind the photograph was a handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, protect the child.

Sophia read it again.

Then she saw the date.

Twenty-four years earlier.

She looked at Lorenzo.

“You were nineteen.”

He nodded.

“That was the year my father died.”

Sophia opened another box.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Antonio's murder.

Elena's disappearance.

A hospital fire.

A custody dispute.

And one article about a young woman named Elena Bellini who had vanished after giving birth.

There was another name.

Michael Bennett.

Sophia sat down.

“My husband was protecting her.”

Marco nodded.

“He was assigned to.”

“By whom?”

“Antonio.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“Because you were the target.”

Lorenzo's face hardened.

“Me?”

Marco nodded.

“Your father believed someone wanted to kill you and replace you with another heir.”

Sophia looked at the photograph.

“So the baby wasn't hidden because it was dangerous.”

“No,” Marco said.

“The baby was hidden because someone wanted to use him.”

Lorenzo understood.

“Who?”

Marco looked toward the newspaper clippings.

“Victor Romano.”

Sophia's stomach dropped.

“Vivien's father?”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo stepped back.

“Why would Victor care about a child from my father's first family?”

“Because that child had a legitimate claim to the Duca inheritance.”

“But my father left everything to me.”

“Publicly.”

Marco pointed to a document.

“Privately, he created a trust.”

Lorenzo picked it up.

His eyes moved quickly.

The trust named a beneficiary.

Not him.

The name had been blacked out.

But the initials remained.

E.B.

Elena Bellini.

Sophia whispered, “Where is Elena now?”

Marco shook his head.

“Dead.”

Sophia looked at him.

“How?”

“Cancer.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“And the child?”

Marco didn't answer.

Lorenzo's voice was quiet.

“Where is he?”

Marco finally looked at Sophia.

“Michael raised him.”

Sophia's breath disappeared.

“What?”

Marco shook his head.

“Not openly.”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“Michael became his legal guardian under another surname.”

Sophia stared at the baby.

Then at the picture of Michael.

“You're saying my husband had another child?”

“No.”

Marco's eyes met hers.

“I’m saying Michael protected Lorenzo's half-brother.”

Sophia couldn't speak.

Then she remembered something.

Michael had always refused to discuss his childhood.

He had once told her, “Some people survive by becoming invisible.”

She had thought he was talking about himself.

Now she understood.

Lorenzo turned another photograph over.

On the back was a current address.

Brooklyn.

A small neighborhood.

And one name.

David Bennett.

Sophia's heart stopped.

“Bennett?”

Marco nodded.

“He has been living under your husband's surname.”

Lorenzo looked at Sophia.

“Do you know that name?”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

Then something inside her changed.

“Wait.”

She opened Michael's old suitcase again.

At the bottom was a birthday card.

Never sent.

The front showed a little boy holding a gray rabbit.

Sophia stared.

Emma's rabbit.

The same gray rabbit she had made from Michael's old coat.

She opened the card.

Inside was one sentence.

For my son, who I hope will someday know why I stayed away.

Sophia couldn't breathe.

Lorenzo read it.

Then he looked at Marco.

“Where is David?”

Marco's face hardened.

“I don't know.”

“You gave me an address.”

“It was seven years ago.”

“Then find him.”

Marco nodded.

Sophia closed the card.

But before she could put it away, another paper slipped from the suitcase.

It was a photograph.

A teenage boy standing beside Michael.

On the back was written:

David — age fifteen.

Sophia looked closely at the boy.

Then she gasped.

Because she had seen that face before.

Not in a photograph.

In the mansion.

A young security guard.

Someone who had been working for Lorenzo for the past six months.

Someone named Daniel.
