Part 3: The Broken Ledger

Daniel fell back against the edge of the mahogany dessert table, nearly knocking over a tray of crystal champagne flutes.

His pristine tuxedo jacket, which had looked so sharp an hour ago, now looked incredibly small on his shaking shoulders.

He looked at his father, Richard, who was sitting at the head table, staring down at his silver fork in absolute silence.

"Claire, please," Daniel whispered, his previous confidence completely evaporating into the cold air of the hall.

"We can settle this in the back room. Think about our family reputation in the regional market indices."

"Your family reputation has been a mathematical lie for the last nine months, Daniel," I said, stepping closer to him.

I took the master registry portfolio from Naomi's hands and opened it to page forty-two.

"You told me the Hale logistics company was highly profitable when you proposed to me in Coyoacán," I continued.

Vanessa, Daniel’s older sister, sank heavily into her velvet chair, covering her face with her silk wrap to hide from the paparazzi lenses outside.

The surrounding guests began to whisper frantically, their phones lighting up as they checked the local business journals online.

The news was already live: Hale Enterprises placed under emergency federal receivership due to compliance overrun.

The two police officers stepped behind Daniel, their heavy hands resting firmly on his velvet lapels.

"Mr. Cross-Hale," the detective said, his voice flat and professional. "You need to step away from the bride and turn around."

"No! Wait!" Vivian screamed, her manicured fingers clawing at the hotel manager's arm as he rolled the steel safe away.

"That safe contains our family's immediate liquidity! Evan needs those funds before the compliance audit closes tomorrow!"

"The funds in that safe were given to me, Vivian," I said, looking her down. "And every single dollar is being redirected to pay the back taxes you forgot to report."
