Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE VIPERS

Detective Miller pulled out his badge and a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. He walked calmly toward Amber, who was now hysterically crying, trying to push Vance between herself and the police officer.
“Amber Buffington, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, attempted manslaughter, and elder abuse,” Miller recited, his voice echoing over Amber’s frantic screams. He grabbed her wrists, roughly pulling them behind her back, and secured the cuffs.
“Vance! Do something!” Amber shrieked.
Vance was already packing his briefcase at record speed. “I don't represent you in criminal matters, Mrs. Buffington. Furthermore, considering you attempted to use my services to commit fraud, I am terminating our attorney-client relationship effective immediately.” He practically sprinted past the detective to get to the door.
Miller then turned to Nurse Higgins, who was sobbing uncontrollably in the corner. “Brenda Higgins, you are under arrest for medical malpractice, accepting a bribe, and reckless endangerment.” Another officer, who had been waiting in the hall, stepped in to cuff the disgraced nurse.
Ruby was backed against the wall, shaking like a leaf. “What about me? Please, Calvin, I’m your daughter!”
“You are nothing to me,” Calvin said, his voice dropping to a cold, hard whisper. “You wanted to drive to Miami? Start walking. You have exactly one hour to get your things out of my house before I have my security team throw everything you own onto the street. If you ever come near my property, my company, or my car again, I will have you arrested for trespassing and conspiracy.”
Ruby didn't wait to be told twice. She bolted from the room, sobbing hysterically, leaving her mother handcuffed and weeping at the mahogany table.
As the police led Amber away, she turned back, her makeup running in dark, ugly streaks down her face. “You’re still dying, Calvin! You have a tumor! You can lock me up, but you’re going in the ground!”
Calvin stood tall, leaning slightly on Elias for support, but his spirit was unbreakable. “It’s an abscess, Amber. I’m going to Nashville tonight to get it drained. I’m going to live a long, happy life. And you’re going to spend the next twenty years in a concrete box. Enjoy the view.”
Once the room was cleared of the chaos, the silence that followed was profound. Paula closed her briefcase with a satisfying snap. “Well. That was the most fun I’ve had at a will reading in my entire career.”
Calvin let out a long, exhausted breath, a genuine smile finally breaking across his weathered face. He looked at Paula, and then at Elias, the two people who had stood by him when the world went dark.
“Elias,” Calvin said softly.
