Chapter 7 - HEALING AND REBUILDING

The flight to Nashville was smooth, and Dr. Thorne’s clinic was a beacon of modern medicine and genuine care. The procedure to drain the pyogenic liver abscess took less than two hours. When Calvin woke up in the recovery room, the crushing, toxic pressure that had been torturing his abdomen for weeks was completely gone. He felt weak, certainly, and the IV antibiotics pumping into his arm were heavy, but for the first time in a month, his mind was crystal clear.

Elias was sitting in the corner, reading a worn paperback novel. When he saw Calvin open his eyes, he grinned. “Welcome back to the land of the living, old man.”

“You’re not far behind me in age, you stubborn mule,” Calvin rasped, taking a sip of ice water. “How long was I out?”

“A few hours. Dr. Thorne said the infection is already receding. You’re going to be fine, Calvin. You’re going to be fine.”

The recovery took six weeks. During that time, Calvin didn't just heal physically; he healed his life. Paula visited twice a week, bringing updates from Atlanta. Amber’s bail had been denied due to the overwhelming evidence of her flight risk and the severity of the charges. She was sitting in the Fulton County Jail, awaiting a trial she was guaranteed to lose. Ruby had vanished, supposedly moving in with a toxic boyfriend in Florida, entirely cut off from the Buffington wealth.

With Paula’s help, Calvin completely restructured his estate. He officially filed for divorce from Amber, citing criminal abandonment and fraud, ensuring she would walk away with absolutely nothing from the marriage.

But the most significant changes were the ones Calvin made for the people who mattered.

On the day Calvin was finally discharged from the Nashville clinic, he asked Elias to wheel him outside to the courtyard. The autumn air was crisp, the leaves turning brilliant shades of gold and amber.

“Elias,” Calvin said, looking out at the trees. “You’ve driven me around for thirty years. You slept in a hospital chair when Barbara died, and you just saved my life. I told you back in Atlanta that if you helped me, you’d never have to work again.”

“I told you I did it because we’re brothers,” Elias replied, crossing his arms. “I don't need your charity, Cal.”

“It’s not charity. It’s a partnership,” Calvin said, pulling a folded legal document from his jacket pocket. “I had Paula draft this up. I’m stepping back from the day-to-day operations of the landscaping company. I want to spend more time in the greenhouse, getting my hands in the dirt. I’m transferring forty percent of the company’s ownership to you. You’re going to be the Vice President of Operations, Elias. You’re going to run the crews. It’s your turn to be the boss.”

Elias stared at the papers, his jaw dropping. Forty percent of Buffington Landscaping was worth millions. He looked at Calvin, his tough exterior finally cracking as tears filled his eyes. “Calvin... I don't know what to say.”

“Say you’ll take the job, so I can finally get some rest,” Calvin laughed, clapping his friend on the shoulder.

They shook hands, a silent pact between two men who had weathered the worst storms together and come out stronger on the other side.
