Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE NAME

They returned to the Ashford Grand.
Room 1708 was empty.
The bed was untouched.
The curtains were open.
The city glittered below.
On the desk sat Victoria's engagement ring.
Beside it was a folded photograph.
Sophia opened it.
Victoria was a child.
Maybe seven years old.
She stood beside a woman who looked exactly like Eleanor Vale.
On the back was written:
She told me the Ashfords took everything from us.
Alexander read the words.
His expression was unreadable.
“She believed it.”
Sophia nodded.
“Her whole life.”
Then the bathroom door opened.
Victoria stepped out.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her eyes were red.
Alexander moved toward her.
“Where were you?”
Victoria looked at him.
“I found her.”
“Eleanor?”
Victoria nodded.
“Where?”
“She left.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“What did she tell you?”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“Everything.”
She sat on the edge of the bed.
“My mother lied to me.”
Alexander remained standing.
“What happened?”
Victoria looked at him.
“She told me your family destroyed her.”
“Did they?”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“She destroyed herself.”
Victoria explained.
Eleanor had been obsessed with Alexander's father.
When he refused to leave his wife, Eleanor became vindictive.
She began collecting private information about wealthy hotel guests.
She used it to threaten people.
Eventually, she recruited employees to help her access confidential records.
Miguel discovered the operation.
He confronted her.
She arranged for someone to frighten him.
It went wrong.
Samuel happened to be there.
Miguel intervened.
He saved Samuel.
But the attacker stabbed him.
Victoria's face crumpled.
“My mother knew.”
Sophia looked at her.
“She knew your father was dying?”
“She knew he might die.”
“And she did nothing?”
Victoria shook her head.
“She ran.”
Alexander sat across from her.
“Why did you become engaged to me?”
Victoria looked at him.
“At first?”
She laughed sadly.
“Revenge.”
“And now?”
“I don't know.”
Sophia watched her carefully.
Victoria wasn't pretending.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had finally run out of lies.
Then Victoria reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small velvet box.
Inside was the micro-storage device.
“I took it from my mother's safe.”
Alexander stared.
“Why?”
“Because I realized something.”
She looked at Sophia.
“Your father didn't die because he was weak.”
Sophia's eyes filled.
“He died because he protected someone.”
“Samuel.”
Victoria nodded.
“And because he refused to give my mother the list.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Six years of grief suddenly had a shape.
Not justice.
Not yet.
But truth.
Then the door opened.
Samuel entered.
Behind him came Alexander's father, Robert Ashford.
Sophia froze.
Robert looked at her.
Then at the watch.
Then at the notebook.
His face changed.
“You found it.”
Alexander turned.
“You knew?”
Robert didn't answer.
“You knew about Miguel.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was killed.”
“Yes.”
Alexander's voice hardened.
“Then why did you let me believe it was an accident?”
Robert looked at Sophia.
“Because I made a promise.”
“To whom?”
“Miguel.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“What promise?”
Robert swallowed.
“To keep his daughter out of this.”
She stared at him.
“You failed.”
“I know.”
Robert looked devastated.
“Miguel gave me the notebook before he died.”
Sophia's eyes widened.
“You had it?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you give it to me?”
“Because the names inside could have gotten you killed.”
Victoria spoke quietly.
“She's already in it.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria pointed to the notebook.
“There is a page with Sophia's name.”
Sophia opened it.
There it was.
Her name.
Sophia Reyes — Guardian.
She looked at Robert.
“What does that mean?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Thomas entered behind them.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Thomas looked at Sophia.
“Your father didn't merely record the names.”
He pointed to the page.
“He named you as the person who would eventually expose them.”
Sophia stared.
“Why me?”
“Because Miguel believed you would understand the Quiet Current.”
Samuel stepped closer.
“Your father believed strength wasn't about fighting.”
Sophia looked at her hands.
“Then why did he train me?”
Samuel answered.
“To survive long enough to choose when not to fight.”
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Security rushed in.
“Mr. Ashford!”
Alexander stood.
“What?”
“The hotel's main systems have been breached.”
“How?”
“The guest database is being copied.”
Robert's face went pale.
“Eleanor.”
Victoria whispered,
“She found the server.”
Alexander looked at Sophia.
“How do we stop her?”
Sophia remembered her father's lessons.
Don't chase the hand.
Watch the current.
She closed the notebook.
“Don't stop the theft.”
Everyone stared.
“Why?”
“Because she's not stealing the information.”
Sophia looked at Victoria.
“She wants us to follow her.”
Victoria understood.
“She wants the list.”
Sophia nodded.
May you like
“And we're going to let her think she has it.”
