Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER WHO WANTED THE HOTEL

The door opened.

Richard Ashford entered alone.

Two security men remained outside.

He looked remarkably ordinary.

Late sixties.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Calm expression.

Sophia expected anger.

Instead, Richard smiled.

“You look like Miguel.”

Sophia hated the comparison.

“You knew him.”

“Yes.”

“You had him killed.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“No.”

“Then tell me who did.”

“Eleanor.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed Miguel had ruined her life.”

Sophia shook her head.

“You helped her.”

“I helped myself.”

Richard admitted it without hesitation.

That honesty was almost worse.

He wanted control of the Ashford Grand.

Robert had refused to give it to him.

Richard had built a network of blackmail and manipulation to weaken Robert's position.

Eleanor became useful.

Victoria became useful.

Miguel became dangerous.

But Richard insisted he never ordered the attack.

“I wanted the notebook,” he said.

“You knew she would hurt him.”

“I underestimated her.”

Sophia's eyes hardened.

“That isn't an excuse.”

“No.”

Richard looked tired.

“It isn't.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“You betrayed our family.”

Richard looked at him.

“Your family betrayed itself long before I did.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your father inherited a company built on secrets.”

“That doesn't justify what you did.”

“No.”

Richard sighed.

“But it explains it.”

Sophia watched him.

Richard wasn't a monster.

He was a man who had spent decades convincing himself that ambition was more important than loyalty.

That made him more dangerous, not less.

He pointed toward the box.

“You found the records.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know about the account.”

“What account?”

“The one your father used.”

Sophia frowned.

Robert had used an account?

Richard smiled.

“That's the part he never told you.”

He explained that Robert had secretly created a trust to protect employees who might become witnesses.

Miguel had been one of them.

Sophia's father wasn't merely investigating the hotel.

He had been protecting workers.

Housekeepers.

Security guards.

Kitchen staff.

People whose names never appeared in executive reports.

The Quiet Current wasn't simply a fighting discipline.

Miguel had turned it into a philosophy.

Protect the people nobody powerful noticed.

Sophia finally understood why he had written her name as guardian.

Richard looked at her.

“Your father believed you could continue it.”

“Continue what?”

“His work.”

Sophia shook her head.

“I’m a housekeeper.”

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.”

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a folder.

Inside were employee records.

Names.

Witness statements.

Evidence.

“Your father hid the truth in plain sight.”

Sophia looked at the papers.

“Why give this to me?”

Richard's expression changed.

“Because I lost.”

Alexander frowned.

“You're surrendering?”

“No.”

Richard looked toward the hotel.

“I'm giving you the truth because someone else is about to destroy everything.”

“Who?”

“Eleanor.”

Sophia stiffened.

“She has the guest database.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She intends to release it.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“That would ruin thousands of innocent people.”

“Yes.”

Sophia looked at Richard.

“Then stop her.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she has the master access key.”

Sophia remembered the brass key.

Her father's key.

She pulled it from her pocket.

Richard stared.

“That key.”

“My father gave it to Samuel.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“Miguel stole it from me.”

Sophia stared.

“What does it open?”

Richard's expression darkened.

“The hotel's original security archive.”

Alexander looked toward him.

“That was demolished years ago.”

Richard smiled.

“Not the archive.”

“The system.”

Sophia understood.

The Ashford Grand's oldest security network was still running beneath the modern system.

Eleanor had access.

But she needed the master key to activate it.

Sophia looked at the brass key.

Then at Richard.

“Where is the archive?”

Richard pointed toward the hotel.

“Below the original ballroom.”

Alexander shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

Sophia remembered the ballroom.

The place where Victoria had tried to kick her.

The place where Samuel had recognized her movement.

The place where everything began.

She turned toward Alexander.

“We need to go back.”

Richard stopped her.

“One warning.”

“What?”

“Eleanor doesn't want the hotel.”

Sophia frowned.

“Then what does she want?”

Richard looked at her.

May you like

“She wants you.”
