Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH MATTHEW REMEMBERED

The police reopened the investigation the following morning.
David Davis was officially questioned.
He denied everything.
He claimed Eleanor's death had been an accident.
He claimed he had never threatened Hannah's mother.
He claimed he barely knew Matthew.
But the flash drive told a different story.
Daniel discovered hidden audio files buried beneath layers of encrypted financial records.
One recording captured Eleanor's voice.
She sounded frightened.
“David, I know what you're doing.”
A man's voice answered.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You should stop.”
“I won't.”
There was a pause.
Then Eleanor said something that made Victor close his eyes.
“Matthew knows.”
The recording ended.
Hannah listened in silence.
Victor looked at his son.
Matthew had been sitting beside her throughout the recording.
His small hands were clenched.
Then he whispered.
“Mom was scared.”
Hannah put an arm around him.
“I know.”
“She told me to hide.”
“Where?”
“Under the stairs.”
Victor stared at him.
“What happened next?”
Matthew shook.
“I heard shouting.”
“From who?”
“Uncle David.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“And then?”
Matthew closed his eyes.
“There was a crash.”
The room went silent.
“And then Mom wasn't moving.”
Hannah felt tears rise.
Matthew continued.
“Uncle David told me not to tell Dad.”
Victor's face broke.
For three years, he had believed his son had simply stopped speaking because of trauma.
Now he understood.
Matthew had been protecting himself.
And protecting a secret he was too young to understand.
The police arrested David that afternoon after forensic evidence linked him to the financial fraud.
But there was still no proof he had caused Eleanor's death.
Until Hannah's mother was found.
She was discovered at a motel in Queens.
Alive.
Weak.
Terrified.
Hannah rushed to her side.
“Mom.”
Her mother began crying.
“I tried to protect you.”
Hannah held her hand.
“From what?”
“David.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he threatened you.”
Her mother looked toward Victor.
“He threatened Matthew too.”
Then she revealed the truth.
Eleanor had discovered that David was stealing millions through fake companies.
Hannah's mother had helped her collect evidence.
The two women had planned to expose him.
But David discovered the plan.
He arranged the crash.
Eleanor died.
Matthew survived.
And Hannah's mother spent three years hiding because she believed David would eventually find her.
Victor listened in silence.
Then he asked the question that mattered most.
“Why didn't you come to me?”
Her mother looked down.
“Because David told me Victor would be blamed.”
Victor's eyes closed.
“He wanted you to believe I was involved.”
“Yes.”
The entire scheme had been designed to destroy Victor from within.
But David had made one mistake.
He underestimated Matthew.
The little boy had remembered.
And he had trusted Hannah.
Two days later, prosecutors announced formal charges against David.
Financial fraud.
Forgery.
Witness intimidation.
And charges related to Eleanor's death.
The case would take months.
But for the first time in three years, Victor felt that the truth might finally win.
Hannah stayed beside her mother.
She continued working at Romano's.
She continued paying bills.
She refused to accept money from Victor.
When he offered once, she simply shook her head.
“I don't need you to save me.”
Victor nodded.
“I know.”
“I need you to stand beside me.”
He looked at her.
“I can do that.”
Their relationship changed slowly.
There was no dramatic declaration.
No sudden romance.
Just small moments.
Coffee after work.
Conversations about Matthew.
Quiet dinners.
Victor began smiling more.
Matthew began speaking more.
And Hannah began sleeping through the night.
One evening, Matthew asked Hannah a question.
“Are you going to leave?”
She looked at him.
“Why would you ask that?”
“Everyone leaves.”
Hannah's heart broke.
She crouched beside him.
“I'm not going anywhere because you asked me to stay.”
Matthew thought about that.
Then he smiled.
“Good.”
Across the room, Victor watched.
For the first time in years, his son looked like a child.
But happiness would still have to wait.
May you like
Because David had one final secret.
And it was hidden in Eleanor's last letter.
