Chapter 8 - THE PERSON THEY NEVER SUSPECTED
The detective's name was Sarah Collins.
She had been assigned to the Davis case from the beginning.
She arrived at Victor's office early the next morning.
“There is another person involved.”
Victor stared at her.
“Who?”
Sarah placed a folder on the desk.
“Someone close to your family.”
Hannah stood beside Victor.
“Who?”
Sarah opened the folder.
The name was Thomas Reed.
Victor's longtime business manager.
Hannah had met him twice.
He had always seemed polite.
Professional.
Invisible.
That was what made the revelation so disturbing.
“He helped David move the money,” Sarah said.
Victor sat down.
“How long?”
“Seven years.”
Victor looked devastated.
Seven years.
The fraud.
The forged signatures.
The shell companies.
The threats.
The manipulation.
All of it had been happening under his nose.
Thomas was arrested that evening.
He immediately tried to cooperate.
He admitted everything.
He also revealed that David had planned to kill Victor after Eleanor's death and make it look like suicide.
The plan had failed because Matthew survived the crash.
Then Thomas said something that made Hannah's blood run cold.
“David wasn't after money anymore.”
“What was he after?” Sarah asked.
“Revenge.”
“Against Victor?”
Thomas shook his head.
“Against Matthew.”
The trial became even more serious.
David was now charged with attempted murder and conspiracy.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The financial records.
The recordings.
The witnesses.
Matthew's testimony.
And finally, the letter from Eleanor.
Hannah stayed beside Matthew every day.
She never pressured him to testify.
She told him he could speak when he was ready.
On the morning of the hearing, Matthew looked terrified.
“I don't want to see him.”
“You don't have to.”
“But Mom wanted the truth.”
Hannah held his hand.
“Your mom wanted you safe.”
Matthew looked at her.
“What would you do?”
Hannah smiled gently.
“I would tell the truth when I was ready.”
He nodded.
Then he squeezed her hand.
“I think I'm ready.”
The courtroom was silent when Matthew entered.
He sat beside Victor.
David looked across the room.
For the first time, the powerful man who had controlled everyone around him looked uncertain.
Matthew took a breath.
Then he spoke.
“I remember the red door.”
David's expression changed.
Matthew continued.
“I remember my mom telling me to hide.”
His voice shook.
“But I remember.”
That was enough.
The prosecution presented the evidence.
The defense tried to challenge it.
But the story had finally come together.
Eleanor had discovered the fraud.
Hannah's mother had helped her.
David had arranged the crash.
Thomas had helped hide the money.
Victor had been framed.
Matthew had survived.
And Hannah had unknowingly become the person who helped him remember.
When the verdict finally came, David was found guilty on multiple charges.
Victor did not celebrate.
Neither did Hannah.
There was only relief.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Victor ignored them.
Hannah took Matthew's hand.
“It's over.”
Matthew looked up.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
Then he hugged her.
Victor watched.
His eyes filled with tears.
He had lost his wife.
He had nearly lost his son.
He had lost years of his life to lies.
But standing there beside Hannah and Matthew, he realized something.
Not everything had been taken from him.
Some things had found him.
That evening, they went to Romano's.
Mrs. Romano had prepared dinner.
Everyone from the restaurant was there.
Marco raised a glass.
“To Matthew.”
Everyone applauded.
Matthew smiled.
Then he looked at Hannah.
“To Hannah.”
She laughed.
“Why me?”
“Because you found me.”
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“No, sweetheart.”
She touched his shoulder.
“You found me too.”
Victor watched them.
And for the first time, he allowed himself to imagine the future.
A future without fear.
A future without secrets.
A future where his son could grow up without looking over his shoulder.
