Plot twist

PART 2: The Woman Behind the Lie

The room froze.

Not the ordinary silence of shocked professionals.

This was the kind of silence that settled before entire empires collapsed.

The young nurse stood in the doorway, breathing hard, clutching the thick medical file so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

Every pair of eyes shifted between her... and the conference table.

Nathan's voice cut through the silence.

"What did you just say?"

The nurse swallowed.

"I said... the woman who paid me to lie about your daughter's birth is in this room."

No one moved.

Rose let out a tiny yawn, completely unaware that her life had just become the center of a war worth billions.

Nathan slowly turned toward the people seated around him.

Twenty faces.

Twenty expressions.

Fear.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

One of them was hiding something.

"My name is Hannah Brooks," the nurse continued. "I worked in the maternity wing at St. Catherine's Hospital."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"I remember you."

Hannah nodded, tears already filling her eyes.

"You should."

"I was the one who brought Rose to you after she was born."

Emily's heart skipped.

"You disappeared."

"I resigned the next morning."

Nathan's attorney stepped forward.

"If these are criminal accusations, perhaps we should contact the authorities before anyone says another word."

"We already did."

Everyone turned.

Two detectives entered behind Hannah.

One carried a folder.

The other quietly closed the conference room doors.

"We received anonymous evidence three days ago," the older detective said.

"We've been verifying it ever since."

Nathan stared.

"Anonymous?"

Hannah slowly raised her hand.

"I sent it."

Emily looked at her in disbelief.

"Why now?"

Hannah's voice cracked.

"Because I couldn't sleep anymore."

She opened the medical file.

"I told myself it was only paperwork."

"I told myself wealthy people handled things differently."

"I told myself someone else would eventually tell the truth."

She looked directly at Rose.

"I was wrong."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Start at the beginning."

Hannah nodded.

"The night Emily was admitted, her pregnancy became complicated."

"There was heavy bleeding."

"The doctors prepared for an emergency delivery."

Emily remembered every terrifying second.

"I kept asking where my husband was."

"You did."

"I called him."

Nathan frowned.

"I never received a call."

"You didn't."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"What?"

Hannah took a shaky breath.

"Every call from Emily's room was redirected before it ever reached your phone."

Nathan's expression darkened.

"Who had access to do that?"

"Someone from your office."

The detectives exchanged a glance.

One of them quietly slid several phone records across the table.

Nathan picked them up.

His jaw clenched.

Every call Emily had made...

Had been forwarded.

Not to him.

To his executive assistant.

Caroline Mercer.

Nathan looked toward the empty chair beside his own.

"Where is Caroline?"

His chief legal officer answered quietly.

"She called in sick this morning."

One detective spoke immediately.

"We attempted to locate her an hour ago."

"And?"

"Her apartment is empty."

Emily felt cold.

"She's running."

"Looks that way."

Nathan's breathing became slow and controlled.

The way it always did before he dismantled competitors worth hundreds of millions.

But this wasn't business.

This was personal.

"Keep talking," he said to Hannah.

She nodded.

"The morning after Rose was born..."

"A woman came to the hospital."

Emily interrupted.

"Caroline?"

"No."

Hannah hesitated.

"It wasn't Caroline."

"It was someone higher."

The room became still again.

"Higher?"

Hannah nodded.

"She introduced herself as Margaret Whitaker."

Nathan's head snapped upward.

"My mother?"

Emily blinked.

"No..."

Hannah closed her eyes.

"She told me she represented the Whitaker family."

"She said your marriage was already over."

"She said the baby would only complicate the divorce."

Nathan's voice became dangerously quiet.

"What exactly did she ask you to do?"

Hannah looked ashamed.

"She gave me fifty thousand dollars."

Emily felt sick.

"For what?"

"To tell each of you a different story."

Nathan's hands curled into fists.

"She instructed hospital staff to tell Emily that you never came."

"She instructed security to tell you Emily had already left."

"Then..."

Hannah's voice nearly disappeared.

"...she arranged forged discharge papers."

Emily couldn't breathe.

Every lonely night.

Every unanswered question.

Every tear.

Built on a lie.

Nathan suddenly slammed both hands onto the conference table.

The sound echoed through the room.

"My mother..."

His voice trembled with fury.

"...did this?"

Hannah nodded.

"But she wasn't alone."

"What do you mean?"

"There was another woman."

Emily instinctively knew.

Before Hannah even spoke.

"Who?"

Hannah whispered.

"Victoria."

Nathan closed his eyes.

His fiancée.

The woman every magazine believed would soon become the next Mrs. Whitaker.

Emily had seen their photographs.

Charity galas.

Private yachts.

European vacations.

Perfect smiles.

Nathan slowly opened his eyes.

"Victoria knew?"

Hannah nodded.

"She was there."

Emily laughed once.

It wasn't humor.

It was heartbreak.

"So while I was recovering from childbirth..."

"...your future wife was helping erase our daughter."

Nathan looked like someone had struck him.

"I never proposed."

Emily stared.

"What?"

"The engagement was announced by the media."

"I never corrected it."

"Why?"

He answered honestly.

"Because I stopped caring."

Emily shook her head.

"That doesn't matter."

"No."

"It doesn't."

The detective's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked up.

"We found Caroline."

Everyone waited.

"She wasn't hiding."

"She was trying to board a private jet."

Nathan's voice remained calm.

"Where was she going?"

"Switzerland."

The detective paused.

"But before we arrested her..."

"...she gave us something."

He removed a small flash drive.

"She said if she ever got caught..."

"...this proves who planned everything."

Nathan stared at the drive.

Emily did too.

"So it's over."

The detective slowly shook his head.

"No."

"What do you mean?"

"Caroline claims she didn't create the plan."

"She only followed orders."

Nathan exhaled sharply.

"My mother."

"That's what we assumed."

The detective looked directly at him.

"But according to Caroline's statement..."

"...Margaret Whitaker wasn't the mastermind."

Emily frowned.

"Then who was?"

The detective inserted the flash drive into the conference room computer.

A security video filled the massive screen.

Hospital parking garage.

11:42 p.m.

The timestamp matched the night Rose was born.

A luxury black sedan pulled into the underground garage.

The driver's door opened.

Nathan stared.

His face lost every trace of color.

"No..."

Emily looked at the screen.

A man stepped out wearing an expensive gray overcoat.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Commanding posture.

Nathan whispered the words almost to himself.

"That's impossible."

Emily looked back at him.

"You know him?"

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

His entire body had gone rigid.

Finally, barely above a whisper, he said,

"That's my father."

Emily blinked.

"But..."

"Your father died three years ago."

May you like

Nathan's eyes never left the screen.

"So did I."
