PART 3: The Man Everyone Buried

No one in the room spoke.
The security footage continued playing in eerie silence.
The silver-haired man stepped confidently out of the black sedan, adjusted the cuff of his tailored overcoat, and walked toward the private hospital entrance as though he owned the building.
Nathan stared at the screen without blinking.
His lips parted slightly.
"That's him..."
Emily searched his face.
"Nathan..."
He slowly shook his head.
"I buried him."
The detectives exchanged confused looks.
"The death certificate was verified," one of them said. "Your father, Richard Whitaker, died in a helicopter crash three years ago."
Nathan laughed once.
A hollow, broken sound.
"I identified the body myself."
The detective frowned.
"Then either you identified the wrong man..."
"...or someone wanted you to."
Emily felt a chill race through her body.
Everything she thought she understood had shattered.
The divorce.
The forged documents.
The canceled insurance.
The missing phone calls.
Now...
A dead billionaire had apparently walked into the hospital on the night their daughter was born.
The detective paused the video.
"We traced the license plate."
"It belonged to a company that no longer exists."
Nathan nodded slowly.
"Whitaker Strategic Holdings."
Emily looked at him.
"I've never heard of it."
"You weren't supposed to."
"It was my father's private investment company."
"It officially dissolved after his death."
The detective folded his arms.
"Except someone has continued using it."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"For three years."
Emily looked down at Rose.
Her daughter had fallen asleep again.
Completely peaceful.
She had no idea that the truth surrounding her birth reached far beyond a broken marriage.
Nathan turned toward Hannah.
"Did you ever meet my father?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"But everyone treated him like they already knew who he was."
"No one questioned him."
"He walked through security without signing in."
The older detective spoke quietly.
"Almost like they were expecting him."
Nathan's phone suddenly vibrated.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
Then again.
His attorney glanced at the screen.
"The board."
Nathan declined the call.
"They can wait."
His phone rang a fourth time.
This time the caller ID made him freeze.
Unknown Number.
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"This is Nathan."
Silence.
Then...
A calm, familiar voice.
"You've always answered on the fourth ring."
Nathan's entire body went rigid.
Emily watched every drop of color disappear from his face.
"No..."
The voice chuckled softly.
"You still sound exactly like your mother."
Nathan whispered,
"...Dad?"
The room fell silent.
The detectives immediately activated the speakerphone.
The voice remained perfectly composed.
"I see you've finally started asking the right questions."
Nathan gripped the phone tighter.
"You're dead."
"So everyone believes."
Emily felt goosebumps spread across her arms.
Nathan's breathing became uneven.
"I buried you."
"You buried what I allowed you to bury."
The detective silently motioned for his partner to begin tracing the call.
Nathan forced himself to stay calm.
"Why?"
"For the same reason I've done everything."
"To protect this family."
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"You destroyed this family."
"I preserved it."
Emily stepped closer to the phone.
"You separated a mother from her husband."
"You stole a year from our daughter's life."
The voice paused.
"I never intended for the child to exist."
Nathan exploded.
"Don't you dare talk about my daughter like that!"
The room echoed with his shout.
For the first time since Emily had walked into the building...
She saw genuine fury.
Not corporate confidence.
Not billionaire authority.
A father.
Richard's voice remained cold.
"That child threatened everything."
Nathan's eyes burned with rage.
"She threatened your money."
"My legacy."
"Exactly."
Emily stared in disbelief.
"You're admitting this?"
"I've spent my entire life building an empire."
"I wasn't about to hand it over because my son chose love over strategy."
Nathan clenched his fists.
"You chose greed."
"I chose survival."
The detective held up three fingers.
Three more minutes.
The trace needed time.
Nathan understood immediately.
"So you framed Emily."
"I removed an obstacle."
"You forged documents."
"I corrected a mistake."
"You destroyed my marriage."
"I prevented a scandal."
Emily felt sick listening to him.
There wasn't a hint of guilt.
Only calculation.
Richard continued.
"You were becoming weak, Nathan."
"You skipped board meetings."
"You canceled acquisitions."
"You talked about having children."
Nathan's voice shook.
"Because I wanted a family."
"And families make billionaires vulnerable."
Emily looked at Nathan.
For the first time...
She understood.
The cold, emotionally distant man she had married hadn't been born that way.
He had been raised inside a machine.
A machine built by Richard Whitaker.
The detective suddenly mouthed,
Almost there.
Nathan kept him talking.
"So what now?"
"Now?"
Richard laughed softly.
"Now you've found your daughter."
"I expected that eventually."
Nathan frowned.
"You wanted us to know?"
"Of course."
Emily blinked.
"What?"
"I simply needed the timing to be useful."
Nathan's stomach dropped.
"What are you talking about?"
"You'll understand tomorrow."
The line went quiet.
Then Richard added one final sentence.
"Tell the board to enjoy today's meeting."
The call disconnected.
The detective looked up immediately.
"We've got a location."
"Where?"
He frowned.
"...Not a person."
"What?"
"The signal came from inside Whitaker Tower."
Everyone looked around.
"This building?"
The detective nodded.
"He never left."
Nathan's attorney suddenly burst through the conference room doors.
He looked terrified.
"Mr. Whitaker!"
Nathan turned.
"What?"
"The board meeting..."
"What about it?"
"They just voted."
Nathan frowned.
"I postponed it."
"They ignored you."
Emily's heart sank.
"What happened?"
The attorney swallowed hard.
"They removed you as CEO."
Silence.
"They what?"
"They held an emergency vote."
"They claimed you abandoned your responsibilities."
Nathan stood motionless.
"Who led the meeting?"
The attorney answered without hesitation.
"A man introduced as the majority shareholder."
Nathan already knew.
He whispered the name before anyone else could.
"...Richard."
The attorney slowly nodded.
"He said..."
The attorney struggled to breathe.
"...he said the Whitaker family finally has its rightful leader back."
Before anyone could react, every television inside the conference room suddenly switched on automatically.
Every financial news channel carried the same breaking headline.
RICHARD WHITAKER RETURNS AFTER THREE YEARS.
A live camera showed the lobby downstairs.
Surrounded by reporters...
The man the entire world believed had died...
Smiled directly into the cameras.
Then looked straight into one lens.
Almost as if he knew Nathan was watching.
He smiled.
And gently lifted a photograph.
It wasn't a business document.
It wasn't company stock.
It was a picture of baby Rose.
