Chapter 2 - THE CHAMBER OF TEARS

The heavy iron-reinforced door groaned on its rusted hinges as Preston pushed it open, revealing a hidden, dimly lit room behind the master suite's grand bookcase.

The cool, damp air that rushed out of the dark chamber smelled of concrete, stale dust, and the undeniable scent of fear.

Preston stood in the doorway, his custom-tailored beige business suit stark against the filthy, peeling wallpaper of the secret room.

In his left hand, he clutched a sleek digital tablet, the screen displaying a live, night-vision camera feed of the very room he was now entering.

Behind him stood Elena, the mansion’s lead housekeeper, her face a pale mask of absolute terror as she pressed her fingers against her lips to suppress a sob.

Sitting on a pile of dirty, thin blankets on the concrete floor were his three precious children, their small bodies shivering in their simple linen pajamas.

The twins, Mikaelyn and Masonel, along with their younger brother, Tommy, looked up at their father with wide, tear-stained eyes.

They raised their tiny, trembling arms toward him, their silent cries of relief cutting through the suffocating quiet of the mansion like physical blades.

"Daddy," Mikaelyn whispered, her voice cracking as she reached out through the dim light, her little fingers shaking.

Preston’s heart shattered into a million jagged pieces at the sight of his children being treated like prisoners inside his own multi-million-dollar home.

He took a slow, heavy step into the room, his eyes scanning the barred window and the concrete floorboards.

But before he could pull his children into his arms, his gaze locked onto the partially open slatted closet door directly behind them.

Hiding in the deep shadows of the closet was a dark, silent figure, her eyes reflecting the cold, predatory glare of a hunter waiting in the brush.

The red arrow on the surveillance monitor pointed directly toward her hiding spot, confirming that the monster was still in the room.

It was Victoria, his wealthy, cold-blooded stepmother, her face a mask of bitter, unyielding malice as she stared at Preston from the dark.

She held a leather-bound legal folder tightly against her chest, her fingers clutching the forged asset transfer deeds.

"Do not take another step, Preston," Victoria's voice hissed from the shadows, carrying a chilling sweetness that turned the warm room to liquid ice.
