Plot twist

Chapter 12 - ELLA WENT BACK TO THE PLACE WHERE SHE FIRST DECIDED TO RUN

Two years after the bakery shooting, Ella returned to the old Chicago townhouse.

The one with the explosion.

The one she had not entered since leaving Alessandro.

It had remained empty.

Alessandro owned it.

Never sold.

Never rented.

Ella discovered that accidentally.

“Why?”

They stood across the street.

Lily was at preschool.

Alessandro looked at the building.

“I couldn’t.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It felt like selling the crime scene of my marriage.”

Ella’s chest tightened.

“Dramatic.”

“I have been told.”

The front steps had been repaired.

New windows.

Fresh stone where the blast damaged the lower wall.

Inside, furniture remained covered.

Dust.

Silence.

Ella walked upstairs.

Her body remembered before her mind did.

Bathroom.

White tile.

The cabinet where she kept pregnancy tests.

She stood in the doorway.

Alessandro remained behind her.

Not entering.

Choice.

Ella stepped inside.

The room had been repaired.

Different mirror.

Same shape.

She touched the edge of the sink.

“I was standing here.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Nico told me.”

She looked back.

“He saw me through the upstairs window after the explosion.”

“He knew?”

“He guessed.”

Ella swallowed.

“I had the test in my hand.”

Alessandro’s face broke.

“I put it in my robe when I heard the blast.”

“You came upstairs.”

“Blood on your shirt.”

“Not mine.”

“I know now.”

“I asked what happened.”

“You said, ‘Nothing you need to worry about.’”

He closed his eyes.

Ella continued.

“That sentence ended us.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You need to hear why.”

He nodded.

“I had just learned I was pregnant.”

“I was terrified.”

“I looked at the man I loved and asked whether our home had been bombed.”

“And you told me I didn’t need to worry.”

Her eyes filled.

“I understood what you meant.”

“You meant you would handle it.”

“You meant I could trust you.”

“But what I heard was that my fear was inconvenient information.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“Now.”

He stood quietly.

Ella looked at the room again.

“For two years, I thought leaving was the bravest thing I ever did.”

“It was.”

She looked back.

“You think?”

“Yes.”

“It forced me to become a mother without you.”

“Yes.”

“It hurt me.”

“I know.”

“It hurt you.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“And it kept Lily outside a house where someone had just planted a bomb.”

Ella closed her eyes.

He continued.

“You made the best decision you could with the man I was.”

No request to rewrite history.

No guilt.

That was why tears came.

Ella crossed toward him.

“What would you say now?”

“If the same thing happened?”

“Yes.”

Alessandro thought.

“I’d tell you the truth.”

“Car exploded.”

“We don’t know who did it.”

“Security believes you may be a target.”

“I’m scared.”

“We need to decide together where to go.”

Ella smiled through tears.

“Longer.”

“I’m learning.”

Then:

“I would ask whether you were okay.”

That broke her.

She leaned against him.

Alessandro held her.

Not tightly.

Not as if she might disappear.

Simply there.

After several minutes, Ella stepped back.

“I want to sell the house.”

His eyes widened.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because keeping it frozen doesn’t honor what happened.”

“It keeps us standing in it.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Okay.”

“No argument?”

“No.”

“Who are you?”

He smiled.

“Expensive therapy.”

They sold the townhouse three months later.

The proceeds went partly to the community foundation.

Ella chose that.

Alessandro did not increase the amount secretly.

Growth.

Then Christmas arrived.

Lily was five.

She had opinions about decorations that exceeded her qualifications.

Nico came early.

Dante arrived carrying a bottle of wine and a present for Lily that cost $480.

He proudly announced:

“Under the limit.”

Ella stared at Alessandro.

“You told everyone?”

“It’s policy.”

Nico laughed.

Gabriella attended too.

Sarah Monroe stopped by for dessert and claimed she was only there because Lily invited her.

Nobody believed her.

After dinner, snow began.

Lily ran toward the windows.

“Snow!”

Alessandro stood beside Ella.

No mansion.

No guns at the table.

No hidden surveillance.

Just family.

Then Lily turned.

“Presents.”

“Tomorrow.”

She looked betrayed.

“One.”

“No.”

“Daddy.”

Alessandro immediately looked weak.

Ella pointed at him.

“Don’t.”

“I said nothing.”

“Your face.”

Family tradition.

Eventually Lily went to bed.

At eleven, Ella found Alessandro in the kitchen washing glasses.

That still surprised her.

“What?”

He looked over.

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

Ella smiled.

Then reached into a cabinet.

She removed a small box.

Alessandro froze.

“What is that?”

“Your turn to be quiet.”

Impossible.

Still, he tried.

Ella placed the box on the counter.

Inside was not a ring.

It was a key.

He looked confused.

“What?”

“The old church on North Avenue.”

His expression changed.

Their first wedding venue.

Small Catholic church Alessandro’s mother attended.

Not a ballroom.

Not family estate.

He stared.

“Ella.”

“I booked it.”

“When?”

“February.”

His eyes filled.

“For what?”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You’re supposed to be smart.”

He laughed once.

Then covered his mouth.

“Are you asking me to marry you?”

“Yes.”

“Again?”

“Yes.”

He looked like someone had removed gravity.

Ella continued.

“Not because Lily wants it.”

“Not because we used to be married.”

“Not because I believe marriage fixes what happened.”

“I want to marry who you are now.”

Alessandro cried.

No attempt to hide it.

Ella smiled.

“And I want a prenup.”

He laughed through tears.

“Of course.”

“Separate personal assets.”

“Yes.”

“Independent trust protections for Lily.”

“Yes.”

“No surveillance clauses.”

He stared.

“That is not usually in a prenup.”

“It will be in ours.”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Then?”

Alessandro walked around the counter.

Stopped.

“Can I kiss my fiancée?”

Ella laughed.

“Yes.”

He kissed her.

Upstairs, a small voice shouted:

“I KNEW IT!”

They separated.

Ella closed her eyes.

“Lily!”

The child appeared at the top of the stairs wearing Christmas pajamas.

Nico appeared behind her.

He looked guilty.

Ella stared.

“You told her?”

Nico raised both hands.

“She interrogated me.”

“She’s five.”

“Exactly.”

Lily ran downstairs.

“Wedding!”

Alessandro lifted her.

She wrapped her arms around both parents.

“You stay now?”

Ella’s throat tightened.

She looked at Alessandro.

He did not answer for her.

That mattered.

Ella kissed Lily’s forehead.

“Yes.”

Not forever because the world guaranteed it.

Not because danger had vanished.

Not because love made people invincible.

Because every day, they had learned how to choose staying without making it a cage.

May you like

“Yes.”

This time, she meant it.
