Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE SUITCASE FROM THE NIGHT SHE RAN

Ella stared at the pregnancy test through two layers of evidence plastic.

Two faded pink lines.

Two years old.

Still enough to make her remember everything.

The bathroom floor beneath her bare feet.

The explosion outside.

The mirror shaking.

A car alarm screaming.

Alessandro running upstairs with blood on his shirt.

The test hidden inside her robe pocket because she had not known how to tell him while men shouted downstairs.

Three days later, she packed it inside the blue suitcase.

She remembered placing it between sweaters.

She remembered holding it once in Milwaukee and almost calling him.

Then crying instead.

When the suitcase broke, she threw it into the dumpster behind her apartment.

At least she thought she had.

Now it had been found inside Tomas Greco’s vehicle.

“Why would he keep it?”

Ella asked.

Alessandro stood across from the evidence table.

Federal investigator Sarah Monroe sat nearby.

No connection to previous story. Fine.

Sarah was forty-six, sharp-eyed, and unimpressed by Alessandro’s reputation.

“I’m more interested in how he got it.”

Ella looked at Alessandro.

He shook his head.

“Not mine.”

Sarah opened another evidence envelope.

A photograph.

Tomas outside the Milwaukee laundromat building eleven days after Ella disappeared.

The date matched the day Alessandro said his people found her.

Another photograph showed Tomas beside the dumpster.

Holding the suitcase.

Ella’s stomach turned.

“He took it.”

“Yes.”

Sarah continued.

“We found a storage key inside Tomas’s wallet.”

“Unit in Cicero.”

“Search warrant is executing now.”

Alessandro’s phone rang.

Dante.

Timing.

He answered.

Sarah listened too.

Twenty minutes later, photographs from the storage unit arrived.

Boxes.

Surveillance files.

Copied leases.

Daycare records.

Medical documents.

Ella’s prenatal appointments.

Birth certificate request.

Photographs of Lily.

Hundreds.

Alessandro stood motionless.

The silence around him felt dangerous.

Sarah watched carefully.

Then another file arrived.

Payments from Raffaele’s holding company.

Not directly.

Through consultants.

But consistent.

Tomas had been paid to hide Ella’s pregnancy from Alessandro.

Why?

The trust.

Control.

But that did not explain everything.

One folder contained reports addressed to Carlo Mancini.

SUBJECT E.

Pregnancy confirmed.

Estimated due date.

Child likely Vitale.

Do not approach without authorization.

Ella’s skin crawled.

She reached for the table.

Alessandro moved instinctively.

Stopped before touching her.

“Can I?”

The question almost broke her.

She nodded.

He placed one hand against her back.

Steady.

No pulling.

No ownership.

Just support.

Sarah continued.

“Tomas appears to have been working two directions.”

“Raffaele paid him to keep Alessandro uninformed.”

“Carlo paid him for access.”

“And Tomas kept personal copies of everything as insurance.”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Who killed him?”

“Unknown.”

“Carlo?”

“Likely.”

Sarah closed the file.

“But something else doesn’t fit.”

“What?”

“If Carlo knew Lily existed for eighteen months, why wait until now?”

Ella looked at Alessandro.

Exactly.

Sarah continued.

“Something changed recently.”

“Something made Lily more valuable.”

Alessandro answered:

“The bakery.”

“No.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Before that.”

She pushed a photograph forward.

Lily outside preschool three weeks earlier.

The man from the gray sedan stood in the background.

Evan Price.

Same man.

He had been watching for weeks.

Then another image.

A second man.

Older.

Ella recognized him.

Her face went cold.

“No.”

Alessandro looked.

“What?”

She pointed.

“Dr. Stephen Hale.”

“Who?”

“My obstetrician in Madison.”

The man who delivered Lily.

Sarah immediately began making calls.

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“Why would your obstetrician be watching her?”

“He wouldn’t.”

“Then he’s involved.”

Ella shook her head.

“He was kind.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Kind is not evidence.”

She almost snapped.

Then stopped.

He was right.

She hated that.

Records arrived by afternoon.

Dr. Hale had accessed Lily’s birth records three times in the past month.

No medical reason.

Two weeks earlier, he received $75,000 from a consulting company linked to Raffaele.

Ella felt sick.

“What did he give them?”

Sarah answered.

“Probably the birth certificate.”

“Maybe paternity indicators.”

“Maybe medical information.”

Alessandro’s voice became cold.

“Bring him in.”

Sarah looked at him.

“You mean request an interview.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“Progress.”

He ignored her.

Dr. Hale agreed to speak with investigators after being confronted with payment evidence.

He broke in eleven minutes.

Raffaele’s attorney had approached him eighteen months earlier.

At first, only asking whether Ella had delivered safely.

Then requesting blood type.

Birth date.

Hospital records.

Hale said no.

Then accepted money.

Then more.

Three weeks ago, he was asked a new question.

Had Lily ever undergone genetic testing?

Why?

Hale did not know.

But the question mattered.

Alessandro understood before Ella.

“The trust.”

Sarah frowned.

“What about it?”

“Legal acknowledgment.”

He stood.

“The thirty-percent transfer requires proof of biological descent.”

“DNA.”

Ella looked at the report from that morning.

The DNA test they had ordered voluntarily.

“No.”

Alessandro’s face went pale.

“If that result is entered in any court, bank, trust office—”

“The clause activates.”

“Yes.”

Sarah leaned back.

“So before Alessandro discovered Lily, she was a hidden potential heir.”

“Now?”

“She is provable.”

“Which means Raffaele’s branch loses reversion rights immediately.”

Ella stared.

“Could they stop it?”

Alessandro answered:

“If Lily ceased to be legally acknowledged before filing.”

Silence.

Ella’s stomach turned.

“What does that mean?”

Sarah’s face hardened.

“It means kidnapping could be used to delay.”

Alessandro looked worse.

“And if she died?”

Sarah did not answer.

She did not need to.

Ella stood.

“No.”

Alessandro moved closer.

“Ella.”

“No.”

Her breathing came too fast.

For two years, she had believed leaving made Lily safe.

For eighteen months, men had known exactly who her child was.

They had watched her.

Paid doctors.

Tracked preschool.

And now paternity itself made Lily more dangerous.

Ella looked at Alessandro.

“I should never have done the test.”

“No.”

“I did this.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“You protected her legally.”

“You didn’t create the trust.”

“You didn’t create Raffaele.”

“You didn’t create Carlo.”

“Stop taking responsibility for crimes other people choose.”

The words surprised her.

Because they sounded like something she had once shouted at Alessandro about himself.

His world.

His guilt.

His constant belief that protection made him responsible for everything.

Sarah’s phone rang.

She listened.

Then stood.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Raffaele’s financial records show a charter flight scheduled tonight.”

“Destination?”

“Cayman Islands.”

“Passengers?”

“Unknown.”

Alessandro’s expression turned cold.

“He’s running.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Maybe.”

“Or he’s moving money.”

Then Dante called.

Different emergency.

Alessandro answered.

His face changed instantly.

“What do you mean she’s gone?”

Ella stopped breathing.

“Who?”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Gabriella.”

The former FBI agent protecting Lily had disappeared from the safe apartment.

But Lily was still there.

Ella ran upstairs.

Lily sat on the floor coloring.

Two guards nearby.

Safe.

“Where’s Mrs. Sloan?”

Lily looked up.

“She got phone call.”

“What phone call?”

“Her son.”

Gabriella had no son.

Ella’s stomach dropped.

“She said she had to go help him.”

Alessandro entered.

His expression hardened.

“She was lured out.”

Dante appeared behind him.

“We found her phone in the garage.”

“Car gone.”

“Tracker disabled.”

Sarah joined them.

“Why take Gabriella?”

Alessandro looked toward the files.

Because Gabriella had spent two years watching Ella.

Because she knew every surveillance team Tomas used.

Because she might know things nobody realized she knew.

Then Lily spoke.

“Mrs. Sloan gave me this.”

She held up a folded grocery receipt covered in crayon.

Ella took it.

On the back, in hurried handwriting:

ELLA — IF I DON’T COME BACK, TOMAS WASN’T THE FIRST MAN WATCHING YOU. ASK ALESSANDRO WHO NICO BELMONTE IS.

Ella looked up.

Alessandro had gone completely still.

“Who is Nico Belmonte?”

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

A kind she had almost never seen.

“My brother.”

Ella stared.

“You don’t have a brother.”

Alessandro’s voice became quieter.

“I did.”

May you like

And suddenly the secret around Lily was no longer only about Carlo Mancini or Raffaele Vitale.

It reached into the one part of Alessandro’s past he had never told his wife existed.
