My mother sank onto one of the white iron terrace chairs, her teal wrap slipping from her shoulders as her dynasty collapsed into a maximum-security compliance audit.

I turned my back on them, walking past the shattered champagne glasses toward the waiting black sedan at the end of the driveway.

People like the Bennetts always believe that because they carry a loud opinion, a long history of manipulation, and a half-million-dollar threat, they can command the room.

They look at a quiet sister who handles the data in silence and mistake her patience for weakness.
