Chapter 3 - THE AUDIT OF RETRIBUTION

The grand ballroom dissolved into a sea of frantic whispers, the two hundred high-society guests scrambling backward as the detectives stepped onto the stage.

Derek tried to lunge toward the private exit behind the elaborate flower wall, his face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl of absolute panic.

But the lead detective was faster, his large frame blocking the corridor as his hand secured Derek’s right shoulder with a physical, unyielding finality.

The heavy, metallic clack of the steel restraints closing around Derek’s wrists echoed loudly through the silent, vaulted room.

"Evelyn, you set me up!" Derek screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate rage as he was forced down onto his knees on the polished floor.

"This is my wedding! You are a bitter, unstable woman who couldn't handle the fact that I finally found success without you!"

"Success doesn't wear a stolen tuxedo, Derek," I said, walking slowly up the steps of the stage until I was standing directly over his trembling frame.

I reached down, my fingers gently brushing against Noah's navy blue tie to ensure it remained perfectly straight under the glittering lights.

"You called my son a troublesome child because his heart required the surgery you were too selfish to finance," I whispered, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet frequency.

"You told your mother I was lazy because I slept in a hospital chair instead of attending your country club dinners."

"You drained our savings, moved your assistant into our life, and believed my silence was a sign of permanent submission."

"But I wasn't hiding from you, Derek."

"I was simply auditing the trail of your greed."

Vanessa fell to her knees beside the shattered remnants of the champagne tower, her white satin train dragging through the spilled alcohol and broken glass.

"Please, Evelyn, don't do this!" she sobbed, her manicured fingers clutching the fabric of my dress, her diamonds looking cold and useless under the lights.

"My brother didn't know what Derek was doing with the shell company! He was just trying to help us build a home!"

"Your brother signed the shell-company directories in exchange for a fifty-thousand-dollar kickback, Vanessa," Mark Ellison, our forensic accountant, said as he stepped onto the stage.

He held open the white envelope the security director had delivered, pulling out the finalized federal indictment papers.

"The federal prosecutors have already executed a total asset freeze on all accounts tied to Northstar Strategic, including the honeymoon package you planned to use tomorrow."

"By sunrise, the luxury apartment on the Upper East Side will be locked by the state marshals."

"You called my son a mistake, Derek," I said, looking him directly in his empty, terrified eyes as the officers began to drag him toward the exit.

"Now, you will have absolutely nothing."
