Chapter 7 - LEARNING HOW TO BE A MOTHER AGAIN
The hardest part came after the arrests.
It wasn't the courtroom.
It wasn't the paperwork.
It wasn't even the public attention.
It was learning how to live with Chloe again.
Chloe remembered Mariana.
But she also remembered being told that her mother was dangerous.
Sometimes she would hesitate before entering a room.
Sometimes she would wake from nightmares.
Sometimes she would ask the same question repeatedly.
“Mommy, you're not leaving, right?”
Mariana always answered.
“No.”
And she never became tired of saying it.
They moved into a small house near a quiet neighborhood.
Daniel helped Mariana recover the property documents.
Detective Bennett stayed involved.
Claire, after recovering from her illness, became part of their lives again.
For the first time, Chloe had people around her who did not demand that she choose sides.
Mariana also began therapy.
Not because Lucas had been right about her.
But because what happened to her had left scars.
She wanted to heal them.
Slowly.
One morning, Chloe came into the kitchen holding a photograph.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Can we go back to our old house?”
Mariana looked at her.
“Why?”
“I want to see my room.”
Mariana smiled.
“Of course.”
They returned several weeks later.
The apartment felt smaller.
Colder.
Mariana walked through the hallway.
She opened Chloe's bedroom.
The pink dress was gone.
The closet was empty.
Chloe stood in the doorway.
“I remember this.”
Mariana looked at her.
“What?”
“Being scared.”
Mariana knelt.
“You don't have to be scared anymore.”
Chloe hugged her.
They stayed like that for a long time.
Then Chloe whispered:
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Can we have a strawberry cake?”
Mariana laughed through her tears.
“Yes.”
They went to a bakery.
Chloe chose the biggest cake she could find.
That evening, they sat together at the kitchen table.
For the first time, the silence did not feel frightening.
It felt peaceful.
Mariana looked at her daughter.
“You know something?”
“What?”
“You saved me.”
Chloe frowned.
“How?”
“By telling the truth.”
Chloe smiled.
“I just wanted Mommy back.”
Mariana reached across the table.
