Chapter 8 - THE LAST LIE
The trial lasted months.
Lucas eventually admitted to forging documents.
Victor Hale denied involvement at first.
But the financial records were overwhelming.
Emails connected them.
Bank transfers connected them.
And the recordings connected them.
Claire testified.
Daniel testified.
Detective Bennett testified.
Finally, Mariana took the stand.
The courtroom was silent.
She described the day Chloe disappeared.
She described the false funeral.
The urn.
The fabricated diagnosis.
The isolation.
And the moment she opened the closet.
“I thought I was losing my mind,” she said.
Her voice remained steady.
“But I wasn't.”
She looked toward Lucas.
“You made me doubt every memory I had.”
Lucas looked down.
Mariana continued.
“You took the death of my child and used it as a weapon.”
The courtroom remained silent.
Then she said something that no one expected.
“But I don't hate you.”
Lucas looked up.
“I hate what you did.”
She paused.
“But I won't spend the rest of my life living inside it.”
That statement became the turning point.
Lucas was convicted.
Victor Hale received a separate sentence for his financial crimes.
The forged property documents were voided.
Mariana's inheritance was secured.
But money was not what mattered most.
Chloe was alive.
She was healthy.
She was going to school.
She had friends.
She laughed again.
And Mariana was learning how to laugh with her.
One afternoon, Daniel brought Mariana a final envelope.
“What is this?”
“Your mother's original trust documents.”
Mariana opened them.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
“If you ever find yourself wondering whether you were strong enough, remember this: you survived what was designed to break you.”
Mariana cried.
She had spent years believing she had lost everything.
She had been wrong.
