Chapter 2 - THE MOTHER'S VENOM

The sound of the sirens grew louder, their red and blue lights beginning to dance frantically against the ceiling of the nursery like a warning of impending doom.
But the woman holding the heavy silver revolver didn't flinch; her hand remained as steady and unyielding as a marble statue.
"You called them, didn't you, Daniel?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping into an ice-cold, quiet frequency that made the hairs on my arms stand up.
"You thought a few local deputies would intimidate me."
"You forgot that I have spent forty years building the very foundation of this city's political and legal networks."
"They won't cross this threshold until I authorize their entry, and by then, the story will already be written."
"The story where your unstable wife had a tragic, postpartum nervous breakdown, took your son's life, and then turned the weapon on herself."
I stared at her, my mind desperately searching for any bottleneck step, any weak point in her psychological armor.
"Why, Mom?" I whispered, my voice thick with a raw, agonizing grief.
"My father loved you."
"I loved you."
"We gave you everything you wanted."
"You gave me nothing but a quiet, submissive life in a suburban cage!" Evelyn roared, her aristocratic composure finally cracking to reveal the raw, desperate predator beneath.
"Your father was a fool who wanted to distribute the shipping patents to the employees' retirement fund."
"He wanted to leave our family legacy to common laborers!"
"When he died, I had to siphon forty million dollars from our offshore accounts in Panama just to keep our real estate portfolios afloat."
"And Clara..." she hissed, her fingers tightening around Clara's hair, pulling her head back even further.
"Clara discovered the transaction directories on my private server."
"She was preparing to hand the encrypted drive to the federal prosecutors tomorrow morning."
Clara let out a soft, choking gasp, her eyes locked onto mine, silently begging me to save our baby boy.
"The drive is already gone, Evelyn," Clara whispered, her voice carrying a sudden, crystalline strength that made my mother’s eyes narrow.
"I gave it to Daniel's brother, Marcus, three hours ago."
"The federal marshals aren't coming to negotiate."
"They are coming to execute an arrest warrant."
Evelyn’s face turned an instant, pasty shade of white under the warm nursery light, her knuckles turning a stark, bloodless white against the silver grip of the revolver.

She slowly rotated her body, pointing the barrel of the gun directly at Clara’s temple.
"Then we will start the execution right here," she whispered.
