Chapter 3 - THE BROKEN GLASS

The heavy wooden door of the nursery didn't open; it was violently shattered off its brass hinges by a hydraulic tactical ram.

The explosion of splintering wood and screaming metal blasted through the quiet room, sending a cloud of white plaster dust rolling across the floorboards.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a powerful, commanding voice roared through the dust.

My older brother, Captain Marcus of the Financial Crimes Division, stood in the doorway, his tall frame dressed in his dark tactical uniform, flanked by four armed marshals.

Evelyn spun toward the door, her arm raising to point the silver revolver at the officers.

But before she could pull the trigger, the massive, muscular German Shepherd K-9, Jax, leaped through the air like a black streak.

His teeth locked onto the thick fabric of Evelyn's silk sleeve, his heavy body slamming her against the white wooden crib with a deafening crash.

The silver revolver flew from her grip, clattering loudly against the floorboards and sliding right next to my boots.

I didn't hesitate.

I lunged forward, grabbing the weapon and tossing it safely onto the hallway floor while the marshals pinned my mother to the ground.

"Get your hands off me!" Evelyn shrieked, her high-society voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate panic as the steel handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

"I am a Vance! You have no legal authority in this house!"

"Your authority was permanently revoked by the Southern District of New York three hours ago, Mother," Marcus said coldly, stepping over the shattered door frame.

"We have the signed confessions from your private clinic doctor, and we have the complete digital trail of the forty million dollars you stole."

I dropped to my knees beside Clara, my arms wrapping around her trembling shoulders as she sobbed against my chest, her tears wetting my gray dress shirt.

"It's over, my love," I whispered, kissing her bruised cheekbone, my heart finally finding its normal, steady rhythm.

"We are safe."

"Toby is safe."

I reached into the crib, gently lifting my sleeping son into my arms, his tiny fingers clenching the fabric of my sleeve as if he knew the storm had finally passed.

The golden queen of the Vance dynasty was led out of our home in chains, her name permanently erased from the legacy she had tried to steal.
