Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE FEDERAL SUBPOENA THAT SPLIT THE MORETTI FAMILY

The subpoena was not an arrest warrant.

That distinction mattered.

Vincent repeated it to three cousins, two executives, Lucia, and himself.

Federal investigators wanted records.

Security payments.

Consulting contracts.

Certain vendor accounts.

Communications involving Nico Bianchi.

Moretti Community Relief reimbursements.

The scope covered seven years.

Anthony Russo read every page.

Then said:

“We comply.”

One cousin, Dominic Moretti, nearly stood from his chair.

“You are not turning family records over voluntarily.”

“It is a subpoena.”

“You fight.”

“Where appropriate.”

“Everywhere.”

Vincent stared.

“No.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“This is because of Evelyn.”

There.

Again.

Blame the woman who exposed the condition.

Not the men who created it.

Vincent said:

“This is because people used company money and my name without lawful authority.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Then another cousin:

“Do you know what happens when outsiders see internal files?”

“Yes.”

“They misunderstand.”

“Then accurate records should help.”

Dominic laughed.

“You actually believe that now?”

Vincent did.

Mostly.

That was new.

The board created a special committee.

Vincent recused from matters directly involving his own historical approvals.

External counsel handled production.

No document shredding.

No selective memory.

Mason remained suspended.

Nico’s contract terminated after preliminary findings established unauthorized threats and policy violations.

He challenged termination.

His right.

No street justice.

Then Lucia called Evelyn.

Not Vincent.

Evelyn almost did not answer.

Then did.

Lucia said:

“They are raiding my life.”

“No one raided your house.”

“Records.”

“My son’s company.”

“Family names.”

Evelyn remained quiet.

Lucia continued:

“Do you understand how much danger you created?”

Evelyn felt old instinct.

Apologize.

Make peace.

Instead:

“I did not threaten Malcolm.”

“I did not create the files.”

“I did not send subpoenas.”

“But you pushed Vincent to expose.”

“No.”

“I asked my husband to stop people from making decisions about me.”

Lucia went silent.

Then:

“You think law will protect you if our enemies see weakness?”

Evelyn looked out hospital window.

“I think fear cannot be our constitution.”

Lucia hung up.

No resolution.

Fine.

Then Evelyn had to make a decision at work.

Hospital administration offered temporary paid leave because press and security presence were disrupting patients.

Evelyn hated.

She also understood.

Two reporters had approached families in the parking lot.

One patient asked whether “mob people” were inside.

Not acceptable.

She negotiated.

One week remote education work.

Then return with limited security at perimeter.

No Moretti employees inside clinical floors.

Hospital controls.

Independent.

Good.

Vincent wanted to pay for lost revenue? Hospital not losing? No need.

He offered nothing.

Progress.

Then federal investigators requested an interview with Evelyn.

Her own counsel.

Voluntary.

They asked:

Did Vincent ever tell her he arranged Malcolm’s relocation?

No.

Did he ever threaten Malcolm in her presence?

No.

Did she ask Vincent to intervene outside law?

No.

Did she know about surveillance?

No.

Did she believe Vincent would have approved if asked?

She paused.

The hardest question.

“Years ago?”

“Maybe.”

“Now?”

“No.”

Truth.

Then:

“Why the change?”

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

Then answered.

“Because he learned that wanting me safe does not make every method his decision.”

The investigator wrote.

No reaction.

Then they asked about Vincent’s broader criminal reputation.

Evelyn refused to speculate.

Good.

Her marriage did not make her expert on every allegation.

Then Malcolm’s attorney filed civil claim.

Against Nico.

Rossi Security Consulting.

Moretti Community Relief.

Possibly Moretti Holdings under agency theory.

Not Evelyn.

Malcolm sought damages for coercion, surveillance, emotional distress.

Internet exploded.

ABUSER SUES MAFIA FAMILY.

People mocked.

Evelyn did not.

She hated Malcolm.

Sometimes.

She also understood rights.

If men threatened him unlawfully, his past did not erase that.

That principle cost her emotionally.

Then Malcolm’s lawyer asked if Evelyn would support dismissal.

“No.”

Would she support him?

“No.”

Would she testify truthfully if subpoenaed?

“Yes.”

That was enough.

Then came a private letter from Malcolm.

Naomi screened.

Evelyn chose to read.

Evelyn,

I know you probably hate me.

I deserve a lot of it.

What I did to you was wrong.

I did not understand that fully when we were together.

That does not change what Moretti’s people did to me.

They told me I would disappear if I came near you.

I believed them.

I took the money because I was scared.

Maybe that is how you felt around me.

I hate admitting that.

Evelyn stopped.

Then continued.

I am not asking you to forgive me or help my case.

I am asking you not to let them say I deserved anything because of what I did to you.

She put letter down.

Cried.

Not for Malcolm.

For the symmetry she did not want.

Fear used as control.

Different scale.

Same mechanism.

She told Vincent.

He listened.

Then said:

“He’s right.”

Evelyn looked.

“That easy?”

“No.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“I want to say he deserved worse.”

“I know.”

“But he didn’t deserve threats in your name.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

“For?”

“For building a culture where a man could believe hurting someone for you would please me.”

Specific.

Evelyn nodded.

Not forgiveness ceremony.

Marriage repair.

Then investigators found payments tied to Nico beyond family security.

A vendor called Harbor Sentinel Services.

Owned by Nico’s childhood friend.

It billed Moretti Maritime for “risk consulting.”

Some real work.

Some vague.

Money then funded off-book contractors.

Did Vincent know?

Invoices rolled into security budget he signed quarterly.

He did not review each.

Leadership responsibility.

Potential legal?

Still investigation.

Vincent voluntarily stepped back from approving security contracts.

Board appointed interim compliance officer.

That headline:

MAFIA BOSS STEPS BACK AMID FEDERAL PROBE.

Business partners panicked.

Two lenders asked questions.

One shipping customer paused renewal.

Cost real.

Dominic said:

“See what honesty buys.”

Vincent answered:

“Maybe what dishonesty costs.”

Then Nico disappeared.

Not physically missing.

He stopped answering counsel for forty-eight hours.

His attorney panicked.

Police later found him at a family property in Pennsylvania.

No dramatic chase.

He returned through counsel.

But before doing so, he sent one encrypted message to Dominic:

VINCENT IS HANDING US TO THEM.

Dominic replied:

HE’S NOT VINCENT ANYMORE.

Investigators recovered later.

Family fracture.

Then Evelyn received a photograph at hospital again.

Not Malcolm.

This time:

Vincent entering federal building.

Red circle around his head.

Message:

WHEN HE FALLS, REMEMBER YOU PUSHED.

Police increased assessment.

Could be angry family member.

Could be internet troll.

Could be Nico-connected.

Unknown.

Vincent wanted Evelyn to stop work.

He asked:

“Would you consider taking leave until sender identified?”

She thought.

“No.”

His face tightened.

He accepted.

Then:

“Can we add hospital-approved security outside?”

“Yes.”

“Driver?”

“No.”

“Check-ins?”

“One text after shift.”

He nodded.

Negotiation.

No command.

That night, Evelyn drove home alone.

A black SUV followed for six blocks.

Her heart raced.

She did not assume.

She turned into a public gas station.

Called 911.

Called hospital security.

Then Vincent.

In that order.

The SUV pulled in.

Door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not a gunman.

A photographer.

Tabloid freelancer.

Police cited/trespassed him from station? Public place maybe no. They warned regarding harassment and documented.

No conspiracy.

Evelyn almost laughed from relief.

When Vincent arrived, he stopped ten feet away.

“Can I come closer?”

“Yes.”

He did.

Then she said:

“Five years ago you would have broken his camera.”

“Yes.”

“Tonight?”

“I’m considering it.”

She laughed.

That laugh was interrupted by Anthony calling.

Federal investigators had found evidence Nico authorized payments to individuals tied to intimidation of business opponents.

Not only Malcolm.

And one payment memo contained initials:

V.M. AWARE.

Vincent stared.

“I wasn’t.”

May you like

Maybe true.

Now he would have to prove what he knew without pretending his ignorance erased responsibility.
