Plot twist

Chapter 8 - SOMEONE SET FIRE TO THE WAREHOUSE AFTER VINCENT CHANGED THE RULES

The fire destroyed an office.

Not the warehouse.

Sprinklers worked.

Fire department arrived quickly.

No injuries.

That mattered.

Vincent repeated it.

No injuries.

No injuries.

Because the old part of him saw flames and wanted blood.

The new part called Anthony.

The fire marshal.

Company insurer.

Police.

Board.

Not cousins.

Not Nico’s old men.

Progress.

Security footage showed a masked person pouring accelerant near an exterior administrative door.

No identifiable face.

Vehicle plate obscured.

Investigators handled.

Then the graffiti.

SOFT MEN LOSE EMPIRES.

Dominic called within an hour.

“Told you.”

Vincent hung up.

No argument.

Evelyn arrived after her shift.

He had asked if she wanted to come.

She did.

She stood across street looking at blackened windows.

“Do you think this is because of reforms?”

“I don’t know.”

“Good.”

Vincent looked.

“What?”

“You didn’t say yes because it feels true.”

He almost laughed.

Then:

“I hate you sometimes.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Unfortunately.”

Investigators examined possibilities.

Labor grievance.

Insurance fraud.

Business rival.

Angry family associate.

Random arson.

No instant answer.

Then online account claimed responsibility.

THE OLD FAMILY REMEMBERS.

Could be real.

Could be attention.

Police traced eventually to a seventeen-year-old in Ohio reposting mafia fan content.

Not arsonist.

Noise.

Important.

Then real evidence:

A burner phone near scene contacted a number associated with a former Harbor Sentinel contractor.

Not Nico directly.

A man named Paul Varga.

He had done security work under Nico.

Paul’s attorney said coincidence.

Police investigated.

No vigilante.

Vincent had to sit.

That was torture.

Meanwhile, Evelyn received hospital administration warning.

Press attention escalating.

Would she consider two weeks remote?

This time she said yes.

Not fear.

Patient privacy.

She could run education sessions remotely.

Choice.

Then a board member suggested Evelyn temporarily leave New York.

Vincent looked at her.

She answered:

“No.”

Board member looked confused.

“This is a security recommendation.”

“Recommendation heard.”

Vincent said nothing.

Good.

Then:

“Mrs. Moretti, with respect—”

Vincent interrupted gently.

“She answered.”

Not threatening.

Boundary.

That mattered.

Then Nico entered a cooperation agreement with investigators.

Not all details public.

He admitted threatening Malcolm.

Admitted unauthorized contractor use.

Admitted classifying business opponents as security threats.

Did he order warehouse fire?

No.

He denied.

Evidence not enough yet.

Then he gave investigators something unexpected.

“Dominic knew.”

Vincent’s cousin.

Nico claimed Dominic had encouraged “old methods” after reforms.

Messages:

Dominic:

V is letting lawyers run family.

Nico:

He’ll come back when something burns.

Dominic:

Maybe he needs reminder.

That line.

Maybe he needs reminder.

Could mean metaphor.

Could be arson encouragement.

Investigators obtained warrant for Dominic’s devices.

Family exploded.

Lucia called Vincent.

“Dominic is an idiot.”

“Yes.”

“Did he burn?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do not protect him.”

Vincent paused.

That was new from Lucia.

“I won’t.”

She said:

“Good.”

Growth spreads slowly.

Then Paul Varga was arrested on unrelated weapons/probation issue? Avoid unnecessary. Better brought in, later charged with arson after forensic evidence and messages. We can say prosecutors charged Paul with arson conspiracy once evidence supported. Dominic not charged initially.

Messages from Paul to Nico months earlier? Nico had cut him. Then to Dominic:

You said old boss needs wakeup.

Dominic:

I said nothing illegal.

Paul:

Relax.

Ambiguous.

Dominic’s lawyer argued he never authorized fire.

No charge at first.

But business board removed him for governance/reputational risk and independent review.

His shares remained.

Cannot confiscate.

Good.

Vincent did not retaliate.

Then Paul’s records showed he acted partly to impress old Moretti network.

No payment from Vincent.

No payment from Dominic proven.

He wanted to prove reforms weak.

This was ideology.

A culture creating people who acted without orders.

Again.

Vincent said to Evelyn:

“I keep finding men who thought what I wanted mattered more than what I said.”

Evelyn looked.

“Maybe because for years it did.”

He winced.

“Yes.”

She continued:

“You don’t fix that by becoming louder now.”

“What then?”

“Make rules louder than you.”

That line became reform principle.

Moretti Holdings hired outside chief security officer.

Not family.

Her name was Rachel Ortega.

Former corporate security executive.

She reported to board risk committee, not directly to Vincent alone.

First meeting:

“Mr. Moretti, if you ask me to do something outside policy, I will say no.”

Vincent smiled.

“You’re hired.”

She did not smile.

“I already was.”

Evelyn liked her.

Rachel Ortega met adult family members individually.

Explained:

What data security held.

What they consented to.

What could be collected under emergency/legal need.

How to opt out of nonessential monitoring.

Evelyn requested deletion of old route history, therapy-location observations, routine lifestyle photos.

Some retained under legal hold for investigation.

Fine.

Others deleted with certification.

No promise universal.

Good.

She chose emergency profile limited to:

Medical contact.

Hospital.

Home.

Vehicle.

Known active threats.

No daily route tracking.

No passive location unless credible threat and review.

Vincent received similar.

Lucia chose more security than Evelyn.

Her right.

Dominic refused all company security.

His right, subject workplace minimum.

Different choices.

That was the point.

Then Malcolm’s mediation resolved.

Rossi Security and Moretti Community Relief agreed to pay $310,000 total to settle claims without admission of every allegation.

Nico contributed under separate arrangement/insurance? Fine.

Malcolm released civil claims related surveillance and relocation, but no gag on reporting crimes.

The old confidentiality clause terminated.

Vincent hated amount.

Evelyn said nothing.

Then Malcolm issued statement.

“I was abusive to Evelyn Carter.”

That shocked her.

He continued:

“I have no excuse.”

“Those facts do not justify threats made against me by others.”

Both.

Publicly.

For once, accurate.

Evelyn did not respond.

No need.

Then Malcolm disappeared from media.

Hopefully irrelevant again.

Federal inquiry into Moretti security continued.

Nico faced charges/plea.

Paul faced arson prosecution.

Dominic fought board removal.

Business stabilized somewhat.

Then Moretti Community Relief’s audit found something unexpected.

The charity had paid not only Malcolm.

It had quietly covered rent, medical bills, and legal help for dozens of people connected to threats or family crises.

Some proper charity.

Some disguised security expenses.

Commingling.

Compliance problem.

The foundation needed overhaul.

Lucia had chaired for fifteen years.

Vincent asked her to step down permanently.

She stared.

“It is my life.”

“I know.”

“You think I stole?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because intent isn’t enough.”

That phrase.

Lucia’s eyes filled.

Evelyn watched.

This was not easy.

Lucia had helped real people.

Also blurred boundaries.

Two truths.

She stepped down.

No public humiliation.

Independent board took over.

Then Lucia told Evelyn privately:

“I thought giving money made everything kinder.”

Evelyn answered:

“Sometimes it did.”

“And sometimes?”

“It made people feel they couldn’t say no.”

Lucia nodded.

Finally.

Then the warehouse arson trial date approached.

Paul’s attorney signaled he might claim Dominic ordered “a message.”

If jury believed, family scandal deeper.

Dominic begged Vincent to issue statement saying he would never authorize fire.

Vincent asked:

“Did you?”

Dominic looked offended.

“No.”

“Then testify.”

“I need family behind me.”

“You need truth behind you.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“You really are different.”

Vincent said:

“Yes.”

No shame.

Then Dominic whispered:

“She did this.”

Vincent looked toward Evelyn across hallway.

“No.”

He said.

“I did.”

May you like

That was the moment the Moretti family finally understood Evelyn had not stolen their old Vincent.

Vincent had decided he no longer wanted to be him.
