Chapter 5 - THE CHILD RACHEL LEFT BEHIND

Ethan couldn't speak.
Maria's voice trembled through the phone.
“Sofia is Rachel's daughter.”
“No.”
“I know what this sounds like.”
“No.”
“Please listen.”
“No.”
Ethan stood.
“Rachel was pregnant with my child.”
“I know.”
“She lost the baby.”
Maria began crying.
“She believed she did.”
Ethan's hand tightened around the phone.
“What are you saying?”
“Rachel gave birth.”
His heart stopped.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“That's impossible.”
“Not the way you think.”
Maria explained.
After the crash, doctors performed an emergency procedure.
Rachel survived long enough to deliver the baby.
A little girl.
But Rachel's condition deteriorated.
She asked Maria, who had been working at the hospital as a cleaner through a staffing agency, to protect the baby.
“She knew someone was trying to find her,” Maria whispered.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because the hospital records were changed.”
Ethan's world tilted.
“Changed?”
“Yes.”
The official file said the baby died.
But Sofia survived.
Maria had taken her away because Rachel feared someone would hurt her.
Ethan couldn't speak.
He thought of the little girl sleeping upstairs in the hotel.
Dark curls.
Brown eyes.
The tiny smile.
The way she had touched Rachel's photograph.
The way she had said she was trying to fix his heart.
“Why did Rachel trust you?”
“Because my sister was her nurse.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know the baby survived?”
Maria's voice broke.
“She held her.”
Ethan sat down.
For three years, he had believed he had lost everything.
But his daughter had been alive.
Somewhere.
Growing up.
Learning to speak.
Learning to laugh.
And he had never known.
“Where are you?”
“I'll meet you tomorrow.”
“Maria.”
“I can't stay on this phone.”
“Where?”
“Old Saint Mary's Chapel.”
The call ended.
Ethan spent the night staring at the ceiling.
At sunrise, he went to see Sofia.
She was eating pancakes.
When she saw him, she smiled.
“Mr. Cole!”
Ethan crouched beside her.
“Can I ask you something?”
She nodded.
“Do you know who your daddy is?”
Sofia looked thoughtful.
“My mommy said he is sad.”
Ethan's throat tightened.
“What else?”
“He works a lot.”
Ethan almost laughed through his tears.
“What else?”
“He likes chocolate cake.”
Sofia smiled.
“Like you.”
Ethan looked at her.
Then he asked the question he was terrified to ask.
“Do you know Rachel?”
Sofia nodded.
“She is my mommy's friend.”
“Anything else?”
Sofia touched his face.
“She said you would love me.”
Ethan broke.
He pulled the little girl into his arms.
Sofia hugged him back.
For the first time, it felt natural.
Not like holding a stranger.
Like holding someone he had been missing without knowing her name.
At noon, Ethan went to Saint Mary's Chapel.
Maria was waiting.
She looked exhausted.
Beside her stood Detective Mitchell.
Maria handed Ethan a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Rachel was holding a newborn baby.
The baby had dark curls.
Ethan stared.
It was Sofia.
His knees weakened.
Rachel had written something on the back.
Our little miracle.
Ethan pressed the photograph to his chest.
“She knew.”
Maria nodded.
“She knew she might not survive.”
“What happened to her?”
Maria looked away.
“She asked me to protect Sofia.”
“And the hospital?”
“Someone changed the records.”
“Who?”
Maria shook her head.
“Dr. Bell.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“The doctor.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Detective Mitchell interrupted.
“We found something.”
She showed Ethan a file.
The baby's original medical record existed.
Sofia had been born alive.
Healthy.
A girl.
The death certificate had been created hours later.
Forged.
Ethan stared at the document.
“Who signed it?”
Mitchell pointed.
Dr. Nathan Bell.
Ethan felt rage rise inside him.
“Why would he do this?”
Mitchell looked at Maria.
“She believes someone paid him.”
“Who?”
Maria whispered,
“Gregory Sloan.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Everything connected.
Rachel had discovered the fraud.
Gregory had been involved.
Dr. Bell had falsified the baby's death.
Adrian had investigated.
Rachel had died.
Adrian had later died.
Maria had hidden Sofia.
And now someone wanted Ethan to stop asking questions.
But there was one question remaining.
Why?
Mitchell answered it.
“Because Sofia is the beneficiary of a trust.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What trust?”
“The one Rachel created before she died.”
Maria handed him another document.
Ethan read it.
Sofia was entitled to a substantial portion of Rachel's inherited assets.
But there was a condition.
The trust could not be accessed until Sofia turned twenty-one.
Unless her biological father assumed guardianship.
Ethan stared.
“If they proved Rachel's child was dead…”
“They could control the assets.”
Ethan finally understood.
Someone hadn't hidden Sofia to protect her.
They had hidden her to control Rachel's money.
But Rachel had anticipated it.
She had left instructions.
And now Ethan had the power to expose everyone.
He looked at Maria.
“Why did you finally tell me?”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Sofia kept asking why her daddy was sad.”
Ethan looked toward the little girl.
She was standing beneath the chapel window.
Sunlight illuminated her dark curls.
He walked toward her.
Sofia smiled.
“Are you my daddy?”
Ethan stopped.
His heart broke open.
“Yes.”
She ran into his arms.
Ethan held her tightly.
“I've been looking for you,” he whispered.
Sofia rested her head against his chest.
“I knew you'd come.”
Behind them, Maria cried.
May you like
But outside the chapel, someone was watching.
And he was holding a photograph of Ethan and Sofia.
