Chapter 7 - THE DAY THE TRUTH CAME OUT

The trial began eight months later.
Gregory Sloan faced multiple charges.
Miriam faced conspiracy and financial crimes.
Dr. Bell faced charges related to falsifying medical records.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But Ethan knew courtrooms could be unpredictable.
He sat beside Sofia outside the courthouse.
She was holding a small stuffed rabbit.
“Are we going home after this?”
“Yes.”
“Can we have pancakes?”
“Yes.”
“With chocolate?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
Then she looked at the courthouse.
“Is that where bad people go?”
Ethan smiled gently.
“It's where people answer for what they do.”
Sofia thought about that.
“Like when I broke the lamp?”
Ethan laughed.
“You weren't three years old.”
“I was almost four.”
“Exactly.”
Inside the courtroom, the prosecution presented evidence.
Financial records.
Phone calls.
Medical files.
Security footage.
And finally, the recording Rachel had secretly made before her death.
Her voice filled the courtroom.
“If something happens to me, I need whoever finds this to know that Gregory Sloan is moving company money.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Rachel's voice continued.
“I believe Miriam knows.”
A pause.
“And I believe someone is following me.”
The recording ended.
The courtroom was silent.
Gregory looked down.
Miriam cried.
Ethan didn't look at either of them.
He looked at Sofia.
She was sitting beside Maria.
Maria held her hand.
The judge later ruled that Rachel's trust remained valid.
Sofia was legally recognized as Rachel's daughter.
Ethan was granted full parental rights.
The inheritance was secured.
The stolen funds were recovered.
The companies connected to the fraud were dismantled.
And the truth about Rachel's death finally became public.
It had taken three years.
But the lie was over.
After the trial, Ethan stood outside the courthouse.
Reporters shouted questions.
He ignored them.
One reporter asked,
“Mr. Cole, what are you going to do now?”
Ethan stopped.
He looked at Sofia.
Then at Maria.
Then toward the sky.
He answered simply.
“Live.”
The word became the headline the next morning.
But Ethan didn't care.
That night, he took Sofia to the cemetery.
It was the first time he had ever brought anyone there.
He stood before Rachel's grave.
Sofia held his hand.
“Is Mommy here?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
She placed a small chocolate cupcake on the grave.
“For Mommy.”
Ethan laughed softly.
“Why chocolate?”
“Because she likes it.”
He knelt.
“You're right.”
Sofia looked at the stone.
“Mommy, Daddy found me.”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“And I'm going to take care of him.”
Ethan looked at her.
She smiled.
“I promised.”
He pulled her into his arms.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The wind moved through the trees.
For once, Ethan didn't feel the need to leave.
He stayed.
He talked to Rachel.
He told her about Sofia's first day of school.
About the chocolate cake disaster.
About how Sofia hated broccoli.
About how she laughed exactly like Rachel.

And for the first time, he walked away from the grave without feeling like he was abandoning her.
He was carrying her with him.
