Plot twist

Part 3: The Newborn Safeguard

By 2:00 a.m., the Northwestern neonatal isolation unit was completely sealed by my private security detail.

A tiny newborn baby lay wrapped in a blue and pink striped hospital blanket inside the clear bassinet.

I stood before the glass, my reflection showing the deep, unyielding rage burning in my eyes as I watched my son breathe.

Brin was stable, the toxins successfully cleared from her system by the hospital’s emergency cardiology team.

Marcus Bell walked down the quiet corridor, his leather briefcase clinking against his belt as he approached my position.

"The asset tracking is complete, Cormack," Marcus said, handing me a thin, white folder.

"Aurelio didn't just bypass our network; he used a forged power of attorney to transfer the Vesper Row deeds to a Delaware shell company."

"The signature match?" I asked.

"An exact vector replica of the waiver Yara made you sign for the property insurance last month," Marcus nodded.

The trap had been set before I ever walked into the hospital lounge that morning.

They thought a pregnant woman and a sudden medical emergency would leave me completely broken.

They completely forgot that a man who controls half of Chicago's underground empire never leaves his ledger unprotected.

"Activate the Vanguard protocol, Marcus," I said, looking down at my son's tiny, curled fist.

"Liquidate every single asset registered to the Salcedo shipping lines by sunrise."
