Chapter 12 - LORENZO FOUND HIS OWN NAME ON THE LAST PAGE

Three years after his release, Lorenzo believed all important N-17 records had been reviewed.
He was wrong.
An archivist found a folded carbon copy inside the back cover of Leo’s largest binder.
One page.
No one noticed because paper adhered to backing.
At top:
L.D. AUTHORIZATIONS — PERSONAL.
Lorenzo’s initials.
Not Leo’s.
Leonardo and Lorenzo both L.D.
That had caused confusion.
The page listed twelve payments authorized personally by Lorenzo over three years.
He already knew about most.
Off-book port protection.
Cash security.
Illegal.
Covered in plea.
Then one entry unfamiliar:
$350,000 — RUSK SPECIAL CONTINUITY — LORENZO APPROVED VERBALLY.
Date:
One week before Leo’s murder.
Lorenzo stared.
“No.”
Isabella looked.
“Could you have?”
“No.”
“Sure?”
He closed eyes.
Memory eleven years old.
“Rusk asked for emergency continuity budget around port strike.”
“Amount?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Could be 350?”
“Maybe.”
His face went pale.
What if money he approved funded Leo’s murder?
The possibility nearly broke him.
He called counsel immediately.
Records preserved.
No private conclusion.
Investigators reopened payment chain.
The $350,000 went from DeLuca holding account to Meridian.
Then split.
$120k legitimate overtime/security.
$80k equipment.
$150k transferred to consulting company later linked to Frank Dorsi—the intermediary Serrano named in Leo hit.
Lorenzo felt sick.
His own approved money may have paid killer.
Intent?
No evidence.
He believed security budget.
Rusk diverted.
Still.
Lorenzo had authorized without documentation because Vincent said urgent.
Again.
He went to Leo’s grave alone.
Actually not alone? Security minimal. Fine.
He stood.
“I paid them.”
Maybe.
Rain.
No answer.
“I signed without asking.”
He sat on wet bench.
For years, he had blamed Vincent, Rusk, father.
Now one careless approval sat between his hand and brother’s death.
Not murder guilt legally.
Personal.
Isabella found him hours later because he told where going.
Good.
She sat.
“I killed him.”
“No.”
She answered immediately.
He looked.
“Money—”
“You approved security funds.”
“They diverted.”
“I should have checked.”
“Yes.”
“That is not same as ordering your brother killed.”
“No.”
“I helped system.”
“Yes.”
Both.
She refused false absolution and false guilt.
“What do I do with that?”
“Live.”
He laughed bitterly.
“That’s your advice?”
“Yes.”
“Repair what can.”
“Accept what cannot.”
He cried.
Then prosecutors confirmed diversion.
No new charge because conduct already within broad financial case? His verbal approval not criminal intent. But evidence added to historical report.
Lorenzo insisted company disclosure include.
Lawyers advised careful phrasing.
He agreed.
Public report:
A portion of funds originating from an emergency security allocation verbally approved by then-executive Lorenzo DeLuca was subsequently diverted through Meridian entities into an account connected to intermediaries involved in Leo DeLuca homicide. No evidence established Lorenzo knew or intended diversion.
Painful.
Necessary.
Press headline:
MAFIA BOSS’S OWN MONEY HELPED FUND BROTHER’S MURDER.
Brutal.
Technically simplified.
Lorenzo did not sue.
Core fact arguably.
Emma, thirteen, saw.
“Is it true?”
“Part.”
“What part?”
“I approved money for security.”
“Bad people moved some.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Then headline mean?”
“Headlines make complicated things short.”
She frowned.
“Did Uncle Leo blame you?”
“No.”
“Then stop face.”
He laughed.
Children.
Then Marco called.
“I was there when Rusk asked.”
Lorenzo froze.
“What?”
“You approved 350?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell investigators?”
“I didn’t connect.”
“Now?”
“I remember Rusk said strike threats needed extra teams.”
“Vincent said sign.”
“Did I?”
“Yes.”
“Did Leo argue?”
Marco paused.
“Yes.”
There.
“What did he say?”
“He said Rusk’s numbers didn’t make sense.”
“What did I say?”
Marco looked pained through phone.
“You told him he was not responsible for security.”
Lorenzo closed eyes.
Not your level.
Same phrase pattern.
Maybe not exact.
He had silenced brother.
Then:
“Anything else?”
“You told him stop looking for problems.”
That sentence hurt more than money.
Leo did not stop.
He died.
Lorenzo whispered:
“Thank you.”
Marco:
“For hurting?”
“For truth.”
Good.
Then he asked company to include leadership-training case.
Not hero.
His failure.
When executives receive concerns outside an employee’s formal role, do not dismiss solely on hierarchy.
Rachel Kim said:
“We don’t need your name.”
Lorenzo:
“Use it.”
Why?
“Because vague case studies let everyone imagine they’re better.”
Good.
Training:
THE 350,000-DOLLAR ASSUMPTION.
Maybe too branded. Better factual case.
No publicity.
Internal.
Then Leo’s old letter regained meaning.
You hate lawyers because they make you wait.
That is why you need them.
Lorenzo changed personal rule:
No verbal approvals above set threshold in any entity he influenced.
Even family matters? Not needed.
He became annoyingly procedural.
Isabella mocked.
“Can we order couch?”
“Need three bids.”
“Divorce.”
He laughed.
Then he joined board? no.
He served as adviser to a nonprofit reentry program? Could be too redemption. Maybe he helped through funding but no control.
He began meeting men leaving prison through a business hiring initiative run by others.
Not speeches about himself.
He offered internships in logistics companies under independent HR.
Some worked.
Some failed.
No savior.
Then a young man named Darius told him:
“You talk like prison fixed you.”
Lorenzo froze.
“I hope I don’t.”
“You do.”
Good.
“Then what would be accurate?”
Darius:
“You had money, lawyers, wife, company after. Most guys don’t.”
Lorenzo absorbed.
“True.”
He stopped using “second chance” casually.
Opportunity uneven.
That maturity mattered.
Then Isabella’s foundation—she still had charity board—launched invoice-transparency program partly due her experience.
Not named after her.
Good.
Sophia’s company expanded.
Emma entered high school.
Marco got engaged? not necessary.
Mary Donnelly established scholarship? Could be through Claire's community college, funded by settlement and contributions? She could create $5k annual accounting scholarship in Claire's name with college. Lorenzo offered to fund; Mary said no at first, later accepted match through formal fund. Nice.
Claire Donnelly Memorial Bookkeeping Scholarship.
Not heroic.
Helping students like Claire.
Lorenzo attended first award only by invitation.
Recipient asked:
“Did Claire work for you?”
He said:
“She helped my brother find something my company should have found itself.”
Accurate.
Then Isabella renewed vows plan.
Date set.
Small garden.
No empire.
Emma asked to be there.
Sophia.
Marco.
Mary? Maybe not intimate.
Rachel? no.
Before ceremony, Lorenzo looked at Isabella.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“After everything?”
“Do not make me explain my own choice.”
He smiled.
“Right.”
They renewed.
No priest maybe civil/personal.
Isabella’s vow:
“I do not promise never to be afraid.”
“I promise not to let fear choose for me when I can choose for myself.”
Lorenzo:
“I do not promise to protect you from everything.”
“I promise not to call control protection when what I mean is fear.”
Everyone cried.
Emma whispered:
“Very long.”
Sophia pinched.
Then Lorenzo added privately after:
“And I promise no more verbal approvals over 50k.”
Isabella laughed at altar.
Perfect.
Happy but not final yet.
May you like
Because next chapter could be Sophia/Emma future, then final.
Need ch14 and 15. We're at 12. Good.
