Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT EMMA DID NOT COME HOME

Emma was nine when she failed to come home from school.
At 3:42 p.m., Sophia received a call from after-school coordinator.
“Ms. Russo, Emma was picked up twenty minutes ago.”
Sophia froze.
“No.”
“Our log shows authorized adult.”
“No one was authorized.”
Silence.
The coordinator’s voice changed.
“Her uncle?”
“Emma does not have an uncle on pickup list.”
Sophia stood so fast chair fell.
“Lock the school.”
The coordinator hesitated.
“Call police.”
Now.
Sophia called 911.
Then Isabella.
Not Lorenzo first.
Good.
Isabella called Lorenzo.
Within minutes, every old instinct in him exploded.
Cars.
Men.
Phones.
Find.
Control.
He stopped.
Police were lead.
School cameras.
Pickup logs.
No private convoy contaminating.
He called Marco anyway—not as investigator, but to review whether any old DeLuca threats were active.
Marco answered.
“I’ll check public/known channels, nothing operational without police.”
Good.
At school, camera showed woman in navy coat arriving.
She presented printed authorization with Sophia’s signature.
Forgery.
She knew Emma’s teacher.
Birthdate.
Pickup code from prior year.
Emma walked willingly.
No struggle.
The woman wore sunglasses.
Car:
Silver Honda.
Plate visible partly.
Police issued alert.
Sophia shook.
Lorenzo arrived.
She rounded on him.
“This is your world.”
Maybe.
He absorbed.
“Maybe.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Vincent?”
“In prison.”
“Rusk?”
“Prison.”
“Then who?”
“I don’t know.”
Worst answer.
Isabella held Sophia.
Daniel? no.
Police traced plate to rental.
Rented with stolen ID.
Then Emma’s smartwatch? She had one? Sophia perhaps after past. Could be tracked, but kidnapper removed. Let's avoid too convenient.
At 5:10, call came.
Not ransom.
A woman.
“Sophia?”
“Yes.”
“Please don’t hang up.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“She’s safe.”
“Who are you?”
“Name’s Carla Russo.”
Sophia went still.
Carlo’s sister.
Emma’s aunt.
Estranged.
Sophia had not seen in six years.
“Carla?”
“I took her.”
Sophia screamed.
“Why?”
Carla cried.
“Because I saw the news.”
“What news?”
“About Carlo.”
Safety investigation.
Carla believed DeLuca family responsible and Sophia was still letting Emma around Lorenzo.
She came from Pennsylvania.
Had previously been denied contact after family conflict following Carlo’s death.
She thought Sophia had been “brainwashed by DeLuca money.”
So she forged pickup authorization and took Emma “to protect her.”
Protection.
Again.
“Where?”
Carla hesitated.
Police traced call with legal emergency procedures.
She was at motel forty minutes away.
Officers responded.
No weapons.
Emma safe.
Eating French fries.
Confused.
Carla arrested for custodial interference/kidnapping-related state offenses depending facts.
Sophia rushed.
Lorenzo stayed back unless asked.
At hospital? standard evaluation no harm.
Emma cried when saw mother.
“Why Aunt Carla say Mr. DeLuca killed Daddy?”
Sophia closed eyes.
Later.
Not now.
Carla’s arrest complicated family.
She was not criminal mastermind.
She genuinely believed Emma unsafe around DeLuca.
That belief did not give permission.
Sophia refused immediate forgiveness.
Carla’s lawyer sought release conditions.
No contact Emma.
Court.
Process.
Lorenzo did not intervene.
Good.
Press learned because police report.
Headline:
MAFIA-LINKED CHILD TAKEN FROM SCHOOL BY RELATIVE AMID DELUCA SAFETY SCANDAL.
Sophia hated.
Her company clients called.
Some worried.
She issued one sentence:
My daughter is safe. This is a private family matter being handled by law enforcement and counsel.
No Emma interviews.
School strengthened pickup.
New codes.
Photo verification.
No paper-only authorizations.
District review.
Again, system.
Then Emma asked to talk to Carla after weeks.
Sophia said no initially.
Why?
Fear.
Counsel and child therapist advised wait.
Later supervised therapeutic setting.
Carla apologized.
“I thought you were in danger.”
Emma frowned.
“Did Mom say?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because I was scared.”
“Mom says ask.”
There.
Children.
“Why didn’t you ask?”
“I thought your mom would say no.”
Emma stared.
“That means no.”
Exactly.
Carla cried.
Sophia outside listening covered mouth.
Family patterns universal.
Not mafia-specific.
Carla faced legal consequences.
Eventually pleaded to reduced offense, probation, counseling, no unsupervised contact for period.
Sophia later allowed limited contact.
Not because pressure.
Because Emma wanted some.
Carla stayed accountable.
Then Lorenzo asked Sophia:
“Do you want Emma away from us?”
The question surprised.
Sophia looked.
“Why?”
“Because Carla’s fear isn’t entirely imaginary.”
“You had enemies.”
“Still might.”
“Your history.”
“Yes.”
Sophia thought.
“I want Emma to choose relationships, but she’s nine.”
“I choose safety.”
“Then?”
“I don’t want her at business properties.”
“Fine.”
“No security people picking her up unless I approve.”
“Fine.”
“Visits with Isabella normal.”
“And you?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Normal.”
That word meant something.
Not boss.
Not threat.
Family friend.
Lorenzo nodded.
Then Emma developed nightmares.
School pickup.
Motel.
Not severe but real.
Therapy.
No shame.
She asked Isabella:
“Were you scared after bad people took you?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
“Not forever.”
“Still?”
“Sometimes.”
“Then what?”
“I do things while scared.”
Good.
Not “fear disappears.”
Emma asked:
“Did Bruno help?”
“Yes.”
“Can I get dog?”
Sophia groaned.
Isabella laughed.
Months later, after careful consideration, Sophia adopted rescue dog.
Medium black mutt.
Emma named him Button.
Why?
“His collar button is crooked.”
Of course.
Lorenzo bought nothing.
He asked if could contribute food.
Sophia said no.
Fine.
Emma trained Button.
No hero dog narrative.
Just pet.
Then something else from Carla’s phone became relevant.
Before taking Emma, Carla had received anonymous messages.
Screenshots claiming DeLuca planned to silence families connected to old safety cases.
Fake.
Or partly sourced from real records.
Who sent?
Account traced to public Wi-Fi, difficult.
Messages included confidential details about Carlo’s accident not public.
That concerned investigators.
Someone still had old Meridian files.
Maybe not active threat.
Maybe former employee.
Then one message:
THEY WILL NEVER LET FAMILIES SEE THE ORIGINAL SAFETY BOOK.
What safety book?
Sophia stared.
Could be rumor.
But old warehouse logs had missing volumes.
N-17 maybe not end.
Federal and corporate investigators searched archives.
They found missing safety ledger scanned on a server from a vendor acquisition.
It showed more incidents.
No new murders.
More falsified checks.
More compensation claims.
Important.
Carla had been manipulated by information someone leaked selectively.
Who?
A former Meridian compliance manager attempting whistleblower disclosure but using anonymous methods.
He admitted sending to multiple families because he did not trust DeLuca-funded review.
Not intending Emma abduction.
Still consequence.
He cooperated.
Again:
When systems lack trusted reporting, people create dangerous side channels.
The safety review expanded.
Families compensated where appropriate.
Public report.
No secrecy.
Sophia said:
“Maybe if this existed earlier Carla would have asked instead of panicking.”
Maybe.
Not excuse.
Context.
Emma returned to school.
First day, Sophia wanted stand at gate all afternoon.
Did not.
School called at pickup.
Proper.
Emma came out.
Safe.
She saw mother.
Rolled eyes.
“You’re crying.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Wind.”
“No wind.”
They laughed.
Then Emma looked at Lorenzo waiting in car? No, he should not. He later hears.
That night, she texted him from Sophia’s phone:
SCHOOL DID NOT LOSE ME TODAY.
He replied:
HIGH STANDARD.
Emma:
VERY FUNNY.
For the first time since Isabella’s rescue, Lorenzo realized being trusted did not mean being present at every crisis.
Sometimes the healthiest sign was that Sophia called police before him.
Good.
He was no longer the emergency system.
May you like
He was simply someone who cared.
And that was enough.
