Chapter 3 - DANIEL LEFT A MESSAGE FOR ROMAN, NOT FOR ME

The first shot Claire heard inside the Vale mansion came from the hallway.
She did not see who fired it.
Roman moved before she understood what was happening.
He shoved her behind the thick wall beside the bathroom door.
The bedroom door splintered inward.
Roman fired once.
A man cursed.
Then footsteps retreated.
No cinematic shouting.
No dramatic threats.
Only movement.
Fast.
Controlled.
Terrifying.
Roman grabbed Claire’s wrist.
“Now.”
She held Daniel’s box against her chest.
They entered the bathroom.
Roman pulled open a floor-to-ceiling linen cabinet.
Behind the towels was a steel panel.
Of course.
He pressed his thumb against a scanner.
The panel opened.
Claire stared at the narrow passage.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“Later.”
They entered.
The door sealed behind them.
A dim strip of emergency lighting ran along the floor.
Claire could hear nothing from the bedroom now.
“Where does this go?”
“Garage annex.”
“Does everybody in your house have secret tunnels?”
“No.”
“That does not make me feel better.”
Roman almost smiled.
Almost.
Then his expression hardened.
“Keep moving.”
Claire followed because this was apparently her life now.
Two minutes later they emerged inside a locked storage room behind the six-car garage.
Thomas was waiting.
Claire stopped.
“You.”
Thomas looked at the box.
Then Roman.
Then her.
His face went pale.
“She found it.”
Roman’s voice was flat.
“Yes.”
Claire looked between them.
“You wrote his name on the drive.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“That is not where I expected this morning to go.”
“Why?”
Thomas looked at Roman.
Roman said—
“Tell her.”
Thomas hesitated.
Roman’s voice sharpened.
“Everything.”
Thomas exhaled.
“Daniel and I were working together.”
Claire stared.
“I know that part.”
“You don’t know all of it.”
Apparently that sentence had become the family motto.
Thomas opened a wall cabinet and removed an old laptop.
No network cable.
No wireless card.
Air-gapped.
He placed it on a workbench.
“Drive.”
Claire did not move.
“It stays with me.”
“Fine.”
Thomas nodded.
“You insert it.”
She did.
The laptop recognized the device.
A password prompt appeared.
Roman stared.
Thomas typed six digits.
The drive opened.
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew the password.”
“Daniel’s anniversary.”
Her throat tightened.
October 14.
Their wedding date.
Daniel had used it for everything Claire told him not to.
The drive contained eleven folders.
DEL-FREIGHT.
EVALE.
ROUTING.
PAYMENTS.
CHICAGO-DOCKS.
ARCHER-BACKUP.
And one file named—
IF ROMAN GETS THIS.
Claire’s heart stopped.
Roman went completely still.
Thomas looked away.
Claire clicked.
A video opened.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Alive.
Claire stopped breathing.
He sat in what looked like his old office.
Blue shirt.
Hair too long because he had been putting off a haircut.
The sight of him after three years hit Claire so violently she gripped the edge of the table.
Daniel looked tired.
He rubbed one hand over his face.
Then spoke.
“If you’re watching this, either Thomas finally did what I told him or something went very wrong.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Roman did not move.
Daniel continued.
“Roman, I don’t know you well enough to trust you.”
Claire turned.
Roman stared at the screen.
“You should know that first.”
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“Your driver thinks you’re different from your father.”
“Maybe you are.”
“Maybe that’s something men who work for dangerous families tell themselves so they can sleep.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“But I found something.”
He described payment routes.
Delaney Freight warehouses.
Companies connected to Enzo Vale.
Cash movements hidden in legitimate shipping contracts.
Then—
“Victor Delaney knows someone is looking.”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
“If this reaches you, it means I may not have time.”
Claire felt nauseous.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“The part you need to know is this.”
“Your father is not just doing business with Delaney.”
“He’s giving Victor access to your companies.”
“He’s setting you up to inherit liability for things you may not even know exist.”
Roman whispered—
“Jesus.”
Daniel continued.
“I’ve copied everything I could.”
“Some of it implicates you.”
Claire looked at Roman.
He did not flinch.
“Not because I have proof you ordered anything violent.”
“Because your signatures are on shell-company approvals and transfers your people told me were routine.”
Roman’s face went hard.
Daniel said—
“If you really are trying to pull Vale operations out of the old business, then you need to see this before your father destroys you with it.”
Then he stopped.
Looked away.
When he faced the camera again, his expression had changed.
Fear.
Claire knew Daniel’s face.
That was fear.
“One more thing.”
“Thomas says if something happens to me, my wife may have the last copy.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“I haven’t told Claire what I’m doing.”
“She has enough.”
“Maddie just turned two.”
His voice softened.
Claire began crying.
“If you ever go near them…”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
Daniel continued.
“…you tell her the truth.”
Silence.
Claire looked at Roman.
He looked as though someone had struck him.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“Do not use her because you’re afraid of what I left behind.”
“Do not make her pay for the fact that I got involved.”
Claire’s tears fell faster.
“And if I’m dead…”
Daniel swallowed.
“…don’t let Maddie grow up thinking I left because I chose to.”
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Claire removed the drive with shaking hands.
Roman stared at the black screen.
“You saw this before.”
It was not a question.
Roman answered quietly.
“No.”
“You had the drive for days.”
“I couldn’t open it.”
“Thomas knew the password.”
Thomas spoke.
“Roman didn’t tell me he found it.”
Claire turned on him.
“Why?”
Roman laughed once.
No humor.
“Because I didn’t trust him either.”
Thomas accepted that.
Claire looked at Roman.
“Daniel told you not to use me.”
Roman’s eyes met hers.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You know now.”
“Yes.”
“You found me anyway.”
“Yes.”
“You walked into my café knowing my husband was dead because of something connected to your family.”
“Yes.”
“You let me fall in love with you.”
Roman’s face tightened.
“I fell too.”
“That does not erase what you did.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying you know.”
His mouth closed.
Claire pointed toward the computer.
“He told you to tell me the truth.”
“I never saw that.”
“But you knew enough.”
Roman did not answer.
“You knew Daniel might have been killed because of your father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I had something dangerous without knowing it.”
“Yes.”
“And you married me.”
“Yes.”
Claire wanted him to lie.
For once.
She wanted Roman Vale to produce one elegant explanation capable of turning everything back into the marriage she had believed existed.
He didn’t.
Thomas broke the silence.
“We need to leave.”
Roman looked toward him.
“Status?”
“Two intruders entered through east service access.”
“Inside help?”
“Probably.”
“Delaney?”
“Almost certainly.”
Claire stared.
“You are discussing men breaking into the house like a plumbing problem.”
Roman turned.
“Because panic will not help Maddie.”
The name stopped her.
“Maddie.”
“She’s safe.”
“How do you know?”
“Thomas moved a man to Groundwork after you left.”
Claire’s anger returned instantly.
“You put someone near my daughter without telling me?”
“Yes.”
Roman immediately added—
“I should have told you.”
“That is becoming a very long list.”
“Yes.”
Thomas’s phone buzzed.
He read the screen.
His face changed.
“What?”
Roman asked.
“Groundwork.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
“What about it?”
Thomas looked at Roman.
Then Claire.
“Someone just tried to enter the apartment through the back stairs.”
Claire dropped Daniel’s box onto the workbench.
“Maddie.”
“She isn’t there.”
Thomas said quickly.
“Your manager took her through the kitchen to the flower shop next door.”
Claire was already moving.
Roman caught up but did not touch her.
“Claire.”
“I am going to my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You are not stopping me.”
“No.”
“Then get out of my way.”
Roman looked at Thomas.
“Car.”
Thomas nodded.
They left through an underground vehicle entrance Claire had not known existed.
Of course.
During the drive, Claire called Groundwork.
Her manager, Jen, answered immediately.
“Maddie’s okay.”
Claire nearly sobbed.
“Put her on.”
A small voice came through.
“Mommy?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Baby.”
“Jen says we’re hiding.”
“I know.”
“A man broke the door.”
Claire’s heart cracked.
“Did you see him?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Mr. Roman’s friend pushed a shelf.”
Claire looked at Roman.
His face did not move.
“Are you coming?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Right now.”
Maddie’s voice softened.
“Is Mr. Roman coming too?”
Claire froze.
Roman looked toward the window.
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
Why okay?
Claire almost asked.
Then Maddie said—
“He knows scary people.”
Roman closed his eyes.
Even Thomas made a sound that might have been a laugh.
Claire should not have found it funny.
She did.
Only for a second.
Then she remembered Daniel’s video.
Do not use her.
Tell her the truth.
The car sped through Chicago.
Claire looked at Roman.
“You are going to give me every file.”
“Yes.”
“Every answer.”
“Yes.”
“And after Maddie is safe, I decide whether I ever see you again.”
Roman went still.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
No argument.
No threat.
No control.
For the first time since Claire had known him, Roman Vale accepted a decision he hated without trying to manage it.
May you like
She noticed.
She wished she didn’t.
