Plot twist

Chapter 4 - THE FILE HIDDEN INSIDE THE WALL

The shooting changed the atmosphere of the Moretti estate overnight.

The guards doubled.

The gates remained closed.

Every vehicle entering the property was searched twice.

And Enzo became almost impossible to approach.

Yet Claraara noticed something else.

He no longer looked at her like a maid.

He watched her.

At breakfast.

In the hallway.

From across the library.

Every time their eyes met, Claraara saw the same question.

Who are you?

She knew she could not hide forever.

But she also knew she could not reveal the truth until she understood what had happened at Mount Sinai.

The next morning, she found Sophia alone in the sunroom.

The girl was staring at the garden.

Claraara closed the door behind her.

“Your father is busy.”

Sophia nodded.

“Can I ask you something?”

Another nod.

“Do you remember the night you were injured?”

Sophia's expression changed.

“I remember Mommy screaming.”

Claraara sat beside her.

“What happened?”

“There was a car.”

“An accident?”

Sophia nodded.

“Daddy was driving.”

Claraara's heart tightened.

“And your mother?”

“Mommy was beside me.”

Sophia's fingers curled around the blanket on her lap.

“She died.”

Claraara had read the official report.

Sophia's mother, Elena Moretti, had died in the crash.

Enzo survived.

Sophia survived.

But Sophia was left paralyzed.

“What happened after the accident?”

Sophia looked toward the hallway.

“Daddy said the doctors could fix me.”

“Did they?”

“No.”

“Who told him you couldn't walk again?”

Sophia whispered a name.

“Dr. Keller.”

Claraara froze.

Martin Keller.

The therapist.

The man administering medication.

The man who had never once performed a proper neurological examination in front of her.

“Was Dr. Keller there after the accident?”

Sophia nodded.

“He was nice at first.”

“What changed?”

“He told Daddy that my legs were dead.”

Claraara felt a cold pressure in her chest.

“Did he say that?”

Sophia nodded.

“He said if Daddy kept hoping, he would make me worse.”

“And your nurse?”

“She came later.”

Claraara leaned closer.

“Do you trust Nurse Clenion?”

Sophia's eyes immediately filled with fear.

“No.”

“Why?”

Sophia whispered.

“She takes pictures.”

“Pictures of what?”

“Me.”

“Doing what?”

“Trying to move.”

Claraara's stomach dropped.

“Where are the pictures?”

Sophia pointed toward the hallway.

“Her room.”

That afternoon, Claraara waited.

She watched Clenion leave the sunroom.

She followed her at a distance.

Clenion entered her room and closed the door.

Claraara continued past.

Ten minutes later, she returned.

The door was locked.

She looked down the corridor.

Empty.

Then she noticed something unusual.

The wall beside Clenion's room had a small ventilation panel.

Claraara removed it.

Behind it was a narrow gap.

Inside sat a black storage box.

Her pulse accelerated.

She pulled it out.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Sophia sitting.

Sophia sleeping.

Sophia during therapy.

Sophia moving her feet.

Claraara looked at the dates.

Some photographs were more than a year old.

She found one of Sophia standing with support bars.

Her knees were trembling.

But she was upright.

Claraara stared at it.

The official diagnosis had been made months after that photograph.

Why?

She found another.

Sophia taking a step.

A therapist held her around the waist.

The date was fourteen months earlier.

Claraara's hands began shaking.

Then she found a video drive.

She plugged it into an old tablet.

The recording showed Sophia in a rehabilitation room.

A woman off camera said, “Again.”

Sophia pushed herself upward.

Her legs trembled.

She stood.

Only for three seconds.

But she stood.

Claraara covered her mouth.

Someone had known.

Someone had known Sophia could stand.

The video suddenly stopped.

Claraara heard footsteps.

She pulled the drive out.

The door opened.

Clenion stood there.

Her face went white.

Then furious.

“What are you doing?”

Claraara stepped backward.

“I was looking for cleaning supplies.”

Clenion's eyes dropped to the box.

“You little liar.”

She lunged.

Claraara moved away.

The box hit the floor.

Photographs scattered.

Clenion grabbed Claraara's wrist.

“You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into.”

Claraara pulled free.

“What did you do to her?”

Clenion froze.

Then smiled.

“You think you're going to save her?”

Her voice dropped.

“You won't even make it out of this house.”

Claraara's blood ran cold.

The door opened.

Enzo stood there.

His gaze moved from Clenion to the photographs scattered across the floor.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

Enzo picked up one photograph.

His face changed.

It showed Sophia standing.

His daughter.

Standing.

He looked at Clenion.

“What the hell is this?”

Clenion's mouth opened.

“Boss, I can explain.”

Enzo's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Explain.”

“I—”

“NOW.”

Clenion began crying.

“It was the doctors.”

“What doctors?”

“They said she needed to stay calm.”

“You told me she was permanently paralyzed.”

“I was following instructions.”

“Whose?”

Clenion said nothing.

Enzo grabbed her arm.

“Whose?”

She whispered a name.

“Dr. Keller.”

Enzo stared at her.

Then looked at Claraara.

For the first time, the anger in his face was replaced by something else.

Horror.

“My daughter could walk?”

Claraara said quietly.

“She may be able to.”

Enzo turned toward the photographs.

He picked up another.

Sophia standing.

His hands began shaking.

Then he noticed something on the back.

A date.

The day after Elena died.

Enzo looked at Claraara.

“Why would anyone hide this from me?”

Claraara had no answer.

But then the library door opened.

One of Enzo's men entered.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We found something outside.”

He handed Enzo an envelope.

Enzo opened it.

Inside was a hospital photograph.

It showed Elena Moretti on the night of the accident.

On the back was a message.

SHE DIDN'T DIE IN THE CRASH.

Enzo's face went completely blank.

Claraara stared at the photograph.

That was impossible.

She had seen the death certificate.

Everyone believed Elena had died at the scene.

But if the message was true, then Sophia's paralysis was not the only lie.

Someone had rewritten the entire story.
