Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT SOPHIA STOOD

The flight home felt endless.

Enzo did not speak.

Elena sat beside him, gripping his hand.

Claraara stared out the window.

Her mind replayed every possibility.

Sophia had been improving.

Her muscles were responding.

But the sudden collapse could mean many things.

Fatigue.

Medication withdrawal.

Autonomic instability.

Or something much worse.

When they arrived, an ambulance was waiting.

Claraara ran inside.

Sophia was unconscious.

Doctors surrounded her.

“Blood pressure is unstable.”

“Heart rate dropping.”

Claraara pushed forward.

“What happened?”

The attending physician looked at her.

“She suddenly became unresponsive.”

“Medication?”

“Baclofen was administered.”

Claraara's face hardened.

“Who authorized it?”

Nobody answered.

She looked toward the nurse.

“Who?”

The nurse checked the chart.

“It was ordered under Dr. Keller's name.”

“Keller is not here.”

“I know.”

Claraara grabbed the chart.

The signature was fake.

Someone had deliberately given Sophia medication.

Too much.

Claraara immediately understood.

“She's being poisoned.”

The room froze.

The physician moved.

“Stop the medication.”

They worked for twenty minutes.

Slowly, Sophia's vital signs stabilized.

Enzo stood outside the room.

His face was expressionless.

But Claraara knew.

He was one second away from destroying everything in his path.

She stepped outside.

“She's alive.”

He closed his eyes.

“Thank God.”

“She was deliberately medicated.”

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

Enzo looked toward the security team.

“Find them.”

The investigation moved quickly.

Hospital records showed that someone had entered under a fake physician account.

The login had originated from inside the Moretti estate.

Again.

Someone had access.

But then the security chief discovered something.

The account had been used from the library.

The library computer.

The same computer Claraara had used.

She immediately became a suspect.

Enzo looked at her.

For one terrible second, neither spoke.

“You think I did this?”

“No.”

“But the evidence says otherwise.”

“I know you didn't.”

“How?”

“Because you saved her.”

Claraara stared at him.

“You don't know what I could have done.”

Enzo stepped closer.

“I know.”

He trusted her.

That mattered more than she expected.

They reviewed the security footage.

At 2:14 a.m., a figure entered the library.

Face concealed.

The person used the computer.

Then left.

Claraara paused the footage.

Something caught her eye.

The person's walk.

A slight limp.

She recognized it.

Daniel.

Enzo's guard.

But Daniel had already confessed.

They found him hiding in a storage building.

He was terrified.

“I didn't hurt Sophia.”

“Then who did?”

“Clenion.”

“She made you?”

Daniel nodded.

“She told me to give her access.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Who is she working for?”

Daniel looked at Enzo.

“Victor Sloane.”

That was enough.

The pieces finally connected.

Victor had controlled the medical operation.

Clenion had acted as his inside agent.

Keller had falsified the diagnosis.

Wren had manipulated the hospital records.

Daniel had been coerced.

And Elena had been forced into hiding.

But there was still one question.

Why had Victor chosen Claraara?

They found the answer in her old hospital file.

A hidden recording.

Victor had personally spoken to Charles Wren after Claraara's case.

“We need someone intelligent enough to see the inconsistencies,” Victor had said.

Wren replied.

“And if she does?”

Victor smiled.

“Then she'll lead us to the next problem.”

Claraara stared at the recording.

“They wanted me to find Sophia.”

Enzo nodded.

“But why?”

“Because they needed someone to expose the fraud without realizing they were being used.”

Elena suddenly understood.

“They needed a scapegoat.”

Claraara looked at her.

“Again.”

Victor's plan had been simple.

If Claraara discovered Sophia's condition, she would confront Enzo.

If Enzo reacted violently, Victor could use the conflict to eliminate him.

If Claraara failed, Sophia remained controlled.

Either way, Victor won.

But Victor had made one mistake.

He underestimated Claraara's compassion.

And he underestimated Enzo's love for his daughter.

That night, they found Victor's location.

A private medical facility.

Claraara went with Enzo.

This time, the police were waiting too.

Victor tried to escape through the rear entrance.

He was arrested before he reached the vehicle.

Charles Wren was arrested hours later.

Keller agreed to cooperate.

Clenion was found hiding at a motel.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Bank transfers.

Medical records.

Forged signatures.

Surveillance.

Photographs.

And years of manipulated patient files.

But the final victory came from Sophia.

Three days later, she began intensive rehabilitation.

Claraara stood beside her.

“Ready?”

Sophia nodded.

“I'm scared.”

“That's okay.”

“Will I walk?”

Claraara smiled.

“I don't know.”

Sophia looked disappointed.

“But I know something else.”

“What?”

“You already moved.”

Sophia smiled.

“Again?”

“Again.”

The child pushed.

Her right knee lifted.

Only slightly.

But it lifted.

Enzo stood behind the glass.

He covered his face.

Elena cried.

And Claraara smiled.

Then Sophia tried again.

Her left foot moved.

The room erupted in applause.

Weeks passed.

Sophia became stronger.

First, she sat without support.

Then she stood between parallel bars.

Then she took one step.

Then another.

It was slow.

Painful.

Exhausting.

But real.

One afternoon, Enzo entered the rehabilitation room.

Sophia looked at him.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Catch me.”

She released the bars.

She took three steps.

Then four.

Enzo caught her.

He fell to his knees and held her.

For the first time in years, Sophia laughed.

But Claraara was not watching them.

She was watching the doorway.

Someone stood there.

A detective.

He held an envelope.

Inside was a document.

Victor Sloane had kept one final secret.

And it concerned Claraara.
