Chapter 5 - THE TRUST THAT COULD DESTROY THEM ALL

The trust documents were hidden inside my father's old law office.
I had never been there alone.
Now I understood why.
My father had spent years preparing for something he knew might come.
Michael came with me.
Olivia refused to stay behind.
We entered through the back door.
The office smelled like dust and old paper.
Everything was exactly as I remembered.
His desk.
His books.
His framed photographs.
His old leather chair.
I stood there for several seconds.
Then I saw something I had never noticed.
A small brass key taped beneath the desk.
Michael removed it.
“What does this open?”
I knew.
My father's safe.
We found it behind a painting.
The key opened the lock.
Inside were documents.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Names.
And one envelope marked:
FOR PENELOPE ONLY.
My hands shook as I opened it.
My father's handwriting filled the page.
Penelope,
If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.
Do not trust Christopher Bennett.
Do not trust his family.
Do not trust anyone who tells you the past is dead.
I stopped reading.
My father had known.
Years before I met Christopher.
He had known.
The letter continued.
Christopher Bennett is not the danger.
His father is.
His father created an identity network.
People were killed so others could assume their names.
Adrian was trained to become Christopher.
Matthew was trained to become other people.
And Claire has been laundering the money.
My heart pounded.
The next sentence made me stop.
Daniel Harper is alive.
I looked at Michael.
He stared back.
My father knew.
The letter continued.
Daniel helped me expose them.
When they discovered this, they came for him.
I helped him disappear.
He is alive.
Trust him.
Then came the final paragraph.
The trust contains no money.
It contains the evidence.
Twenty-two million dollars is simply the price I assigned to keep the evidence protected.
If they ever come for you, transfer the trust to the federal authorities.
Do not negotiate.
Do not trust the Bennetts.
And above all, never let them know where the final file is.
Michael looked at me.
“Where is it?”
I stared at him.
“I don't know.”
Then I remembered.
The old piano.
My father had always told me never to open the bottom compartment.
We returned home.
The piano was in the living room.
I opened it.
Inside was a metal case.
Locked.
Michael examined it.
“Biometric.”
I placed my hand on the scanner.
It opened.
Inside was a flash drive.
One file.
I plugged it into the laptop.
The screen filled with names.
Judges.
Police officers.
Bank executives.
Doctors.
Politicians.
Business owners.
And then the Bennetts.
Matthew.
Claire.
Adrian.
But Christopher's name was different.
Under it was a note.
DECEASED — REFUSED PARTICIPATION.
I started crying.
Christopher had tried to stop them.
He had died because of it.
Then another file opened.
A video.
Christopher appeared on screen.
Alive.
Healthy.
Looking directly at the camera.
“Penelope, if you're seeing this, then Adrian has taken my place.”
My hands covered my mouth.
Christopher continued.
“I know this sounds impossible.”
He explained everything.
He knew his father planned to use his identity.
He knew Adrian had been trained to become him.
He also knew they intended to use my father's trust.
“I loved you,” Christopher said.
“If something happens to me, don't blame yourself.”
He paused.
“I wanted to tell you the truth.”
Then the video changed.
Christopher looked frightened.
“Someone has found out I'm recording this.”
The screen shook.
He whispered:
“It's Matthew.”
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
Christopher had been alive when the recording was made.
The timestamp was eight years ago.
That was the night Daniel disappeared.
The night Christopher died.
The night everything changed.
Then I heard a sound outside.
A car door.
Michael stood.
“Someone's here.”
We turned off the lights.
Three vehicles stopped outside.
Men stepped out.
One of them was Matthew Bennett.
He looked directly toward the house.
Then he smiled.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Adrian.
DON'T LET THEM FIND THE DRIVE.
Another message arrived.
RUN.
The front door exploded inward.
Glass shattered.
Olivia screamed.
Michael grabbed the drive.
We ran toward the back door.
Gunfire erupted behind us.
We escaped through the garden.
A black SUV waited.
The door opened.
Daniel sat inside.
“Get in!”
I froze.
He shouted:
“Penny!”
I jumped inside.
The SUV accelerated.
Behind us, the house disappeared into the darkness.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
“You're real.”
He smiled sadly.
“I told you.”
I began crying.
He reached for my hand.
“I never stopped looking for you.”
I looked back at the burning house.
“Christopher.”
Daniel's face changed.
“He's dead.”
“I know.”
“No, Penny.”
He looked at me.
“He isn't the man you thought he was.”
I understood.
“Tell me.”
Daniel took a breath.
“Christopher knew Adrian would replace him.”
“He let him?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Christopher made a deal.”
May you like
“What deal?”
“To keep you alive.”
