Chapter 6 - THE DEAL CHRISTOPHER MADE

We drove for nearly two hours before Daniel finally stopped at an abandoned farmhouse outside the city.
I didn't want to get out.
I didn't trust anything anymore.
Not houses.
Not photographs.
Not fingerprints.
Not even memories.
Daniel understood.
“You have every right to be afraid.”
“I don't know who to believe.”
“Believe the evidence.”
He pointed toward the flash drive.
“That doesn't lie.”
Michael connected the drive to a secure laptop.
The files opened.
There were hundreds.
Medical records.
Bank transfers.
Video recordings.
Photographs.
Then we found Christopher's final statement.
He had made the recording three days before his death.
He explained that Adrian had been raised to imitate him.
Their father wanted Adrian to replace Christopher if Christopher ever became a liability.
Christopher had discovered the plan.
He tried to expose his father.
That was when Matthew intervened.
Matthew had been working with their father.
Claire handled the money.
Adrian was supposed to disappear.
But Christopher made one final decision.
He contacted Daniel.
Together they created a plan.
Daniel would disappear.
Christopher would fake a financial scandal.
Adrian would replace him temporarily.
Then the authorities would receive the evidence.
But someone betrayed them.
Matthew.
He discovered the plan.
Christopher was killed.
Daniel escaped.
Adrian was forced to continue the impersonation.
But there was one thing Christopher had protected.
Me.
He had hidden my name from the organization.
Until my father died.
Then the trust activated.
That's when they came for me.
I sat silently.
“He knew?”
Daniel nodded.
“He knew they would eventually use you.”
“Why didn't he warn me?”
“Because he believed warning you would get you killed.”
I wiped my tears.
“He was trying to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“Even after he was gone.”
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Then the farmhouse lights went out.
Daniel stood immediately.
“Someone found us.”
Gunfire struck the outside wall.
Michael grabbed the laptop.
We ran into the basement.
Daniel locked the door.
“There's a tunnel.”
“Where?”
“Behind that shelf.”
We moved it.
A narrow passage opened.
We crawled through darkness.
Behind us, men entered the farmhouse.
Matthew's voice echoed.
“PENELOPE!”
I froze.
Daniel pulled me forward.
“Don't answer.”
Matthew laughed.
“You can't hide forever.”
We reached the other side.
A car waited.
We drove again.
This time, Daniel called the FBI.
The evidence was too large to handle alone.
Within hours, federal agents secured the flash drive.
Warrants were issued.
Matthew was arrested.
Claire was arrested.
Several judges resigned before charges were filed.
Banks froze accounts.
The network began collapsing.
But Adrian was missing.
I asked Daniel where he was.
“I don't know.”
Then my phone rang.
Adrian.
I answered.
“Why?”
His voice was quiet.
“I needed to hear you.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You stole my husband's identity.”
“Yes.”
“You slept beside me.”
“I know.”
“You drugged me.”
“I had to keep you from discovering things.”
“You almost destroyed me.”
“I know.”
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn't you kill me?”
Silence.
Then he answered:
“Because Christopher loved you.”
I began crying.
Adrian continued.
“He made me promise.”
“What promise?”
“That if I ever had to become him, I would protect you.”
“You didn't.”
“I tried.”
“No.”
“I failed.”
I heard something in his voice.
Regret.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“You can stop running.”
He laughed bitterly.
“They'll kill me.”
“Who?”
“The people above Matthew.”
“Then help us.”
Silence.
“I have something you need.”
“What?”
“The final names.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Tomorrow.”
Then the line ended.
The next morning, Adrian appeared outside the federal building.
He walked toward the agents carrying a small black case.
He looked exhausted.
He handed it over.
Inside were the final documents.
But before agents took him away, he looked at me.
“I am sorry.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I never wanted your life.”
“But you took it.”
“I know.”
He turned away.
For the first time, I saw him as he really was.
Not Christopher.
Not a monster.
Just a man who had spent his entire life pretending to be someone else.
The final documents exposed the last remaining members of the organization.
The case was finally over.
Months later, Christopher's death was officially reopened.
The truth came out.
He had been murdered.
His name was cleared.
Daniel was no longer a missing person.
My father's death was also reclassified as homicide.
And I finally received the truth I'd spent eight years waiting for.
But one question remained.
What would I do with the twenty-two million dollars?
My father's lawyer gave me the answer.
“It belongs to you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“What?”
“I want to use it to build something.”
“What?”
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Olivia.
“A foundation.”
“For what?”
“For families who lost someone because powerful people thought they didn't matter.”
Daniel smiled.
“I think your father would have liked that.”
I smiled through my tears.
May you like
For the first time, the money didn't feel like a curse.
It felt like an ending.
