Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVELYN’S HEART STOPPED FOR NINETEEN SECONDS

Evelyn’s heart stopped at 1:14 in the morning.

Nineteen seconds.

That was what Dr. Patel told them later.

Nineteen seconds that would divide Phoebe’s life into before and after.

She had been sitting beside Damian in a family waiting room when alarm sounded somewhere beyond double doors.

A nurse ran.

Then another.

Phoebe stood.

No one told her anything.

She knew.

Bodies know before words.

“Grandma.”

Damian stood too.

Phoebe moved toward doors.

A nurse stopped her.

“Please stay here.”

“I need—”

“Please.”

Damian did not pull her back.

Good.

He stood beside.

Phoebe cried silently.

Nineteen seconds.

Then rhythm returned.

Doctors stabilized.

Evelyn needed pacemaker.

Procedure morning.

Risk but manageable.

Phoebe sank into chair.

Damian crouched in front of her.

Not touching.

“What do you need?”

“I don’t know.”

“Okay.”

“I hate that question.”

“Okay.”

She almost laughed.

Then:

“Stay.”

“Yes.”

He stayed.

All night.

At six, Melissa arrived with husband and children arrangements handled.

She saw Damian.

Raised eyebrows.

No questions.

Smart.

At seven, Damian’s phone began vibrating constantly.

He ignored first four.

Phoebe noticed.

“Go.”

“No.”

“Damian.”

“Marco can handle.”

“What happened?”

He looked reluctant.

“Luca was seen entering Salvatore’s club.”

“Then go.”

“No.”

Her grief turned irritated.

“Stop proving things.”

He froze.

“What?”

“You don’t have to sit here to prove I matter.”

His eyes shifted.

Damn.

She was right.

“You are allowed to have another emergency.”

“It isn’t more important.”

“That isn’t point.”

Phoebe breathed.

“Call Marco.”

“If he needs you, go.”

Damian nodded.

Called.

Marco said police already surveilling club because warrant preparation.

No need Damian.

He stayed.

Not because Phoebe demanded.

Because he chose after information.

Better.

Evelyn’s pacemaker procedure succeeded.

At noon, Phoebe was allowed beside her.

Evelyn looked terrible.

Still said:

“I told you I’m not dying this week.”

Phoebe laughed and sobbed.

“Don’t joke.”

“I’m alive. I can joke.”

Then Evelyn saw Damian in doorway.

“Oh.”

Phoebe looked.

“Do you want him gone?”

“No.”

“Come in, handsome criminal.”

Damian blinked.

“Grandma!”

“What?”

Damian entered.

“You look better.”

“I look ninety.”

“You look eighty.”

“Excellent recovery.”

Then Evelyn looked between them.

“So.”

Phoebe groaned.

“No.”

“I nearly died.”

“You have pacemaker, not diplomatic immunity.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Are you dating?”

Damian looked at Phoebe.

Her answer.

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s eyes brightened.

“Real?”

Phoebe looked at Damian.

He smiled faintly.

“Real.”

“Good.”

Then Evelyn’s expression sharpened.

“Do not marry quickly.”

Phoebe nearly choked.

Damian said, “Understood.”

“I’m serious.”

“I know.”

“Rich men move too fast because everyone lets them.”

Damian nodded solemnly.

Phoebe laughed so hard a nurse glanced in.

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“I’m happy.”

Phoebe’s throat tightened.

“You don’t need me married to be happy.”

“I know.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Her grandmother’s eyes softened.

“I only need you not lying because you think my fear is your responsibility.”

Phoebe cried again.

Good.

Later Damian walked her to cafeteria.

She ate sandwich.

He ate nothing.

“Eat.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“You own restaurants.”

“That doesn’t create appetite.”

She pushed chips.

He took.

Normal.

Then Nadia called.

Luca had surrendered to police through attorney.

Not at Salvatore’s club.

He had entered to retrieve documents.

Claimed.

His story:

Salvatore paid him for information for two years.

Initially business schedules.

No threats.

Then gala changed.

Salvatore demanded employee-wing access and Gianna tracking.

Luca sent threatening photo but claimed Salvatore wrote message.

He leaked video.

He did not participate in attempted harm because none yet? The threats only. But why Gianna disappearance? Gianna hid herself. So okay.

Why surrender?

Salvatore ordered him to sabotage Damian’s vehicle.

There.

Escalation.

Luca refused.

Took evidence.

Surrendered.

Damian’s face became stone.

“Vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

“Who rides with me?”

Phoebe understood.

Sometimes her.

Security.

Damian looked toward hospital.

Fear.

Then:

“Evidence?”

“Messages.”

“Police have?”

“Yes.”

Good.

No private revenge.

Salvatore was arrested later that day on conspiracy charges related to attempted sabotage, coercion, fraud, and unlawful business activity pending investigation.

Enzo Rinaldi was not arrested immediately.

He retained lawyers.

Gianna gave testimony.

The marriage alliance died publicly.

Damian’s board removed Salvatore permanently pending proceedings.

Then media found Phoebe.

Hospital had cameras outside.

A photographer caught Damian entering at night and leaving afternoon.

Headline:

DEMARCO SPENDS NIGHT WITH MAID’S FAMILY AS ROMANCE DEEPENS

Phoebe wanted to throw phone.

Melissa said:

“At least they stopped calling you voluptuous.”

“They’re calling me maid like name.”

She was still maid technically.

On leave.

That bothered.

Not because shame.

Because she did not want relationship and job tangled.

Evelyn recovered enough to return Lakeview after four days.

Phoebe made decision.

She resigned from DeMarco mansion.

Damian received letter from household HR first because Phoebe insisted formal process.

He called.

“You resigned.”

“Yes.”

“Because of me?”

“Partly.”

Silence.

“Do you want me to ask you not to?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

She smiled.

Hard for him.

“I need my paycheck not tied to whether we work.”

“Yes.”

“I need to know if I walk away from you, I’m not also unemployed.”

“Yes.”

“I need you not to be boss.”

“I understand.”

Good.

“And I’m not taking severance beyond policy.”

“Phoebe.”

“Policy.”

He exhaled.

“Okay.”

She had savings.

Not much.

Enough for two months with Melissa.

Then what?

She didn’t know.

That frightened her.

Good.

Freedom often does.

Damian did not offer job elsewhere.

Did not offer apartment.

Did not solve.

Three days later, he asked:

“Dinner?”

“Yes.”

Not employer.

Not employee.

Just Damian and Phoebe.

The relationship felt different immediately.

Scarier.

Cleaner.

Then Evelyn called Phoebe into her room at Lakeview.

“I have something.”

“What?”

An old folder.

Community college transcripts.

Phoebe’s.

Two years of event management.

“I kept them.”

“Why?”

“Because you stopped school for me.”

“Grandma.”

“I never asked.”

“You were sick.”

“I know.”

Evelyn touched her hand.

“You can go back.”

Phoebe looked at pages.

“I’m thirty.”

“So?”

“Thirty-one next month.”

“Tragic. Life over.”

Phoebe laughed.

“I don’t know if I want school.”

“Good.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Then find out what you do want.”

That became harder than finding fake boyfriend.

For years Phoebe’s life revolved around who needed her.

Grandma.

Melissa.

Employers.

Now no one was asking.

She was unemployed, dating a billionaire, living with sister, and uncertain what came next.

For first time, she understood why people stayed inside lives that were too small.
