Plot twist

Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT SALVATORE MADE PHOEBE AN OFFER

Salvatore DeMarco was released on bond pending trial.

Phoebe learned from Nadia.

Not Damian.

Her security arrangement had remained active because prosecutors believed Salvatore and remaining associates might seek leverage.

By then Phoebe hated security less.

She had chosen it.

Her company paid part of protection related to professional exposure.

Damian’s legal entities paid additional costs specifically linked to DeMarco threats under written agreement.

Clear.

No favors.

Salvatore contacted Phoebe through attorney.

Offer to meet.

“No.”

Simone asked, “Want to know purpose?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then Salvatore sent written proposal.

Phoebe read because it involved her business.

One million dollars.

For what?

Salvatore would “invest” in Sullivan Household Partners through silent entity.

No management.

No public name.

Enough to expand nationally.

Phoebe stared.

Then laughed.

Of course.

He had finally learned her language.

Not threat.

Opportunity.

She sent refusal through attorney.

Salvatore increased.

Two million.

No.

Three.

No.

Then note:

You’re allowing Damian to destroy generations of family value when one signature could make your company permanent.

There.

One signature.

Phoebe called Damian.

“Your uncle offered me three million.”

Silence.

“What?”

She explained.

His voice became dangerous.

“Do not—”

He stopped.

Good.

“Do you want advice?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t take it.”

She laughed.

“Thank you.”

“Sorry.”

“No. That was requested.”

Progress.

“What does he want?”

“I think influence.”

“Over me?”

“Maybe.”

Then Phoebe noticed something.

The investment agreement referenced a company called North Harbor Domestic Services as co-investor.

She searched.

A household staffing company.

Small.

Recently acquired by holding entity tied to Salvatore.

Why household staffing?

Access.

Homes.

Schedules.

Wealthy families.

Phoebe’s stomach turned.

Domestic workers know everything.

Who travels.

Who drinks.

Who fights.

Where documents sit.

Which doors lock.

Salvatore’s attempted investment was not only about Phoebe.

He wanted a pipeline into private homes.

Information network disguised as staffing.

She contacted Simone.

Then authorities.

Not Damian.

Because this touched her company.

Independent.

Investigators found North Harbor had placed employees in homes tied to business rivals.

No proof workers knowingly spied.

But management collected excessive “client intelligence.”

Travel schedules.

Security systems.

Family relationships.

Asset inventories.

Phoebe felt sick.

Exactly opposite of what she built.

Salvatore saw domestic workers as tools.

Invisible access.

The same invisibility that once made Phoebe useful in DeMarco mansion.

Now he wanted to industrialize it.

She gave statement.

Publicly? Not yet.

Then Salvatore broke bond conditions by contacting her indirectly again.

Arrest warrant issued.

He disappeared.

Again.

Damian increased security request.

This time Phoebe agreed before he asked.

“I want Nadia twenty-four-hour until caught.”

Damian looked relieved.

“Okay.”

“No relocation.”

He winced.

“Had to try.”

“You didn’t.”

“Progress.”

Then Evelyn’s surgery date arrived.

Valve repair.

Higher risk.

Phoebe moved temporarily into Lakeview guest room night before.

Damian came.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Do you have criminals scheduled tomorrow?”

“Not personally.”

“Good.”

She squeezed his hand.

“Take care of her if I die.”

Phoebe snapped.

“Grandma.”

Damian answered:

“No.”

Evelyn stared.

Phoebe did too.

Damian continued.

“I will love her if she lets me.”

Good.

“I will help if she asks.”

Good.

“But I won’t become replacement for you or make promises about her life on her behalf.”

Silence.

Evelyn smiled.

“Excellent answer.”

Phoebe cried.

Surgery took four hours.

Successful.

Evelyn survived.

Recovery difficult.

Phoebe stayed.

Melissa stayed.

Damian stayed part of time.

Not whole.

He had court hearing related to Salvatore.

He went.

Phoebe told him to.

This time he believed her.

Two days after surgery, Salvatore was found.

Not shootout.

At a private hangar outside Milwaukee preparing to leave country.

Authorities arrested.

Evidence from North Harbor strengthened fraud and obstruction case.

Damian did not celebrate.

He looked exhausted.

“What happens?”

Phoebe asked.

“Trial.”

“And you?”

“I’m testifying.”

His voice quiet.

“Against family.”

“Against Salvatore.”

He looked at her.

“Those used to mean same thing.”

Phoebe understood.

Trial lasted six weeks.

Damian testified about Lakebridge.

Old money.

Coercive marriage plan.

Luca.

Sabotage order.

Salvatore’s attorneys attacked him as self-serving criminal nephew trying to clean reputation.

Some accusations had truth.

Damian admitted.

“Yes, I benefited from structures my uncle helped build.”

“Yes, I used intimidation in business.”

“Yes, I failed to ask enough questions.”

“No, that does not make these forged agreements mine.”

Truth without perfection.

Gianna testified too.

Her father Enzo faced separate charges for financial fraud but avoided more severe allegations tied to Salvatore’s sabotage.

He eventually pleaded to fraud counts and stepped down from Rinaldi companies.

Gianna refused to take his seat automatically.

Independent board appointed.

She built her own life.

Good.

Salvatore was convicted on fraud, obstruction, conspiracy related to sabotage, and unlawful surveillance.

Long sentence.

Not mafia execution.

Court.

After verdict, Phoebe thought danger was over.

Then her office was broken into.

Nothing stolen.

Computer untouched.

Only one thing moved.

A framed photograph of Phoebe and Evelyn from company opening.

Placed face down.

Under it:

A note.

SALVATORE ISN’T THE ONLY DEMARCO WHO KNOWS HOW TO USE A MAID.

No signature.

Phoebe’s blood went cold.

Nadia secured office.

Police.

Damian came after asking.

He looked at note.

Then at Phoebe.

“There’s someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Inside my family.”

“Maybe.”

Damian’s face hardened.

Phoebe said:

“Don’t start hunting.”

“I wasn’t.”

She waited.

“Okay,” he admitted.

“I was.”

“Process.”

“I know.”

Security footage showed intruder used key.

No forced entry.

Who had office keys?

Phoebe.

Ana.

Rosa.

Cleaning vendor.

Landlord.

And temporary contractor hired two weeks earlier to install network cabling.

Name:

NICHOLAS DEMARCO.

Phoebe stared.

“Who is Nicholas?”

Damian went completely still.

“My cousin.”

Salvatore’s son.

A man Damian had not seen in nine years.

A man everyone believed was living in London.

The conspiracy had not ended with uncle.

The next generation had returned.

May you like

And unlike Salvatore, Nicholas did not want an arranged marriage.

He wanted revenge.
