Plot twist

Chapter 3 - THE PAPERS IN THE DRAWER

The police arrived before Rosalyn could say anything else.

I heard several voices in the hallway.

Firm.

Professional.

“Step away from the door.”

“Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them.”

Rosalyn started crying.

Brandon began explaining.

His version came quickly.

He said I had become emotional.

He said my exhaustion had made me paranoid.

He said his mother had only tried to help with the baby.

He said nobody had hurt me.

Then one officer asked the question I had been waiting for.

“Where is your wife?”

Neither of them answered.

I heard another officer say,

“Open the bathroom door.”

I unlocked it.

Two officers stood in the hallway.

One looked at my face.

His expression changed.

“Ma'am, are you injured?”

I nodded.

“Several places.”

He looked toward Brandon.

Brandon immediately started talking.

“She fell.”

The officer didn't respond.

He simply asked me again.

“Did he hurt you?”

“Yes.”

Everything became very quiet.

The officer asked me to step into the bedroom.

I kept Liam in my arms.

The second officer stayed between me and Brandon.

Rosalyn stood near the wall, crying.

Then the first officer noticed the baby monitor.

“What is that?”

I handed it to him.

“Please listen.”

He pressed the playback.

The room filled with Rosalyn's recorded voice.

“She'll eventually get tired.”

Then Brandon's.

“She hasn't eaten since breakfast.”

The officer looked at them.

Neither spoke.

The second officer asked,

“Is this your voice?”

Brandon's face tightened.

“It was taken out of context.”

The officer looked at the monitor.

“Then provide the context.”

Brandon had nothing to say.

I thought that would be the end of it.

It wasn't.

While one officer photographed my injuries, the other walked through the house.

He returned carrying a folder.

“Ma'am, is this yours?”

I looked at it.

“No.”

He opened it.

Inside were copies of property documents.

My name appeared on several pages.

So did my father's.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Brandon stepped forward.

“Those are private documents.”

The officer blocked him.

“Stay where you are.”

I picked up the first page.

It was a trust agreement.

My father had established it years before I married Brandon.

I knew about the trust.

I had simply never understood all of it.

My father had told me it was meant to protect a family property until I was older.

I had assumed the house itself was all it contained.

But there was a second page.

A financial account.

Another property.

And a clause I had never seen.

No transfer, refinancing, sale, or assignment may occur without Hannah's independent written consent.

My hands started shaking.

“Why do you have this?”

Nobody answered.

Then the officer opened the bottom drawer of the nightstand.

Inside was a stack of papers.

A power-of-attorney form.

Already filled out.

My name was typed on the signature line.

I stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

The officer looked at Brandon.

“Who prepared this?”

Brandon swallowed.

“My mother's attorney.”

“Name?”

He didn't answer.

The officer asked again.

“Name?”

Rosalyn suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Keller.”

I looked at her.

“Who is Mr. Keller?”

She lowered her eyes.

“He handles our family business.”

I almost laughed.

“What family business?”

Nobody answered.

Then I remembered the recorded conversation.

The unknown man.

The trust.

The house.

The refinancing.

I looked at Brandon.

“You were going to take my property.”

His expression changed.

“No.”

“You had a power-of-attorney prepared.”

“I was trying to help you.”

“By forging my signature?”

“I didn't forge anything.”

“You had the document.”

“I never made you sign it.”

The officer picked up the form.

“You were planning to.”

Brandon said nothing.

The police separated us.

I was taken to the hospital.

Liam was checked and found to be physically okay.

I was treated for the injuries to my cheek, lip, shoulder, and thigh.

The doctor asked how I got them.

I told the truth.

Brandon was arrested that night.

Rosalyn was not arrested immediately.

The officer told me the investigation was ongoing.

I spent the night at my sister's house.

At three in the morning, while Liam finally slept beside me, I looked through the photographs the police had taken of the documents.

One page bothered me.

It wasn't part of the trust.

It was an old photograph.

My father stood beside a brick building.

A younger Rosalyn stood beside him.

And between them was a man I recognized.

Mr. Keller.

Except the photograph was dated eighteen years earlier.

Before I met Brandon.

Before I knew Rosalyn.

I zoomed in.

On the back of the photograph was handwritten:

They promised the property would remain in the family.

I stared at those words.

Then I noticed something else.

The photograph had been torn.

Someone had removed another person from the picture.

I looked at the edge.

A woman's shoulder remained.

A silver bracelet was visible around her wrist.

I had seen that bracelet before.

On my wedding day.

Rosalyn had worn it.

I suddenly remembered her saying,

“This bracelet belonged to someone very important.”

At the time, I hadn't asked who.

Now I knew I needed to.

The next morning, my sister drove me to the police station.

Before I entered, my phone buzzed.

A text from Brandon.

You don't understand what my mother is protecting you from.

I stared at it.

Another message appeared.

Ask her why your father trusted her.

Then a third.

Ask her what happened to the woman in the photograph.

May you like

I looked at the torn photograph in my hand.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Rosalyn had once been protecting my family from someone else.
