Chapter 7 - THE LETTER FROM MY FATHER

The post office box was still active.
The key opened it immediately.
Inside were two envelopes.
One thick.
One thin.
The thick envelope contained the ledger.
The thin one had my name.
I couldn't open either.
Not yet.
I needed to understand what we were dealing with.
The ledger was handwritten.
Names.
Payments.
Property transfers.
Dates.
Company accounts.
Keller's name appeared repeatedly.
So did my grandfather's.
But the most shocking entries involved Rosalyn.
Payments to her.
Payments from her.
Notes beside several entries.
Protection.
Silence.
M.E.
Margaret looked at the pages.
“I never accepted that money.”
Rosalyn started crying.
“I did.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I thought it was for Emily.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Keller told you that.”
“Yes.”
“But he used it to control you.”
Rosalyn nodded.
“I know.”
The ledger finally revealed what my father had suspected.
Keller had been diverting company assets for years.
When my grandfather discovered it, he threatened to expose him.
Keller responded by creating another problem.
Daniel Carter was blamed.
Then Emily's records were altered.
Then my father became inconvenient.
The trust had protected the property.
But the ledger could expose the entire scheme.
That was why Keller wanted the trust.
Not simply for the money.
He needed access to the records attached to it.
I opened my father's letter.
Hannah,
If you are reading this, I failed to tell you something important.
I found Emily.
My hands began shaking.
She is alive.
I stopped.
Tears filled my eyes.
I wanted to bring her home.
But I learned that Keller was still watching.
I chose to wait.
The letter continued.
You may be angry with me.
You should be.
I spent too much of my life believing I could protect everyone by carrying everything alone.
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying.
I should have trusted you with the truth.
I didn't because you were my daughter.
I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from danger.
Then:
I was wrong.
I couldn't read for several seconds.
Then the final lines.
Emily deserves a family.
You deserve a sister.
And I hope one day you both sit at the same table without being afraid.
I folded the letter.
Chloe was crying beside me.
“She has a sister.”
I nodded.
But the story still wasn't finished.
Because Keller was still free.
And he knew we had the ledger.
That night, we received another message.
Return the ledger.
Then:
You have forty-eight hours.
Then:
If you don't, Emily will pay for your father's choices.
My blood ran cold.
The detective immediately increased security.
Margaret stayed with us.
Rosalyn was moved somewhere safe.
Brandon remained in custody.
But I couldn't stop thinking about his role.
He had been part of the plan.
He had hurt me.
He had wanted me to sign.
Yet he might not have known the entire truth.
The next morning, I asked to speak with him.
He looked exhausted.
“I didn't know about Emily.”
“I believe you.”
His eyes filled.
“I knew about the property.”
“I know.”
“I thought Mom wanted to save us.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You took advantage of the fact that I was exhausted.”
“I know.”
He looked at the floor.
“I was wrong.”
That was the first apology that didn't come with an excuse.
But I wasn't ready to forgive him.
“You don't get to decide what happens next.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
Then he told me something I hadn't expected.
“Keller isn't going after the ledger.”
I looked at him.
“He already knows where it is.”
“What?”
“He told me the ledger was useless.”
“Why?”
“Because he said your father made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Brandon looked at me.
“He made a copy.”
My heart stopped.
“A copy of the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Brandon swallowed.
“Inside the trust.”
Everything clicked.
The trust wasn't simply protecting property.
It contained evidence.
My father had created the trust as a vault.
The property was the lock.
The original records were inside.
And only I had legal control.
That explained everything.
The pressure.
The power-of-attorney.
The attack.
They needed me to surrender control.
Then my phone rang.
A number I recognized.
Emily.
I stared.
Nobody moved.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through.
“Is this Hannah?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Emily Rose.”
I couldn't breathe.
“I think I'm your sister.”
I closed my eyes.
“You are.”
Silence.
Then she asked the question that broke my heart.
“Does Dad know I'm alive?”
I whispered,
“He did.”
She started crying.
“Then why didn't he come?”
I looked at my father's letter.
“Because he was trying to protect you.”
There was a long silence.
Then Emily said,
“I found something.”
“What?”
“A photograph.”
“Of what?”
“My father.”
I froze.
“What does it show?”
May you like
She whispered,
“He's standing with Keller.”
