Plot twist
THE SEAM IN HER DRESS / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 3 - THE MAN IN THE RED SOCKS

The Grand Meridian had hosted presidents, royalty, athletes, actors, and executives whose personal security teams distrusted everyone except themselves.

Within four minutes, the hotel’s private elevators stopped.

Exterior cameras shifted into active tracking mode.

Security officers appeared at every exit without alarming the guests.

Maya had spent years working inside the hotel, but she had never seen its protective systems fully activated.

She hated that Ellie had become the reason.

Marcus guided them into an internal conference room without windows.

Adrian followed.

Maya turned on him the moment the door closed.

“My daughter is not evidence.”

“I agree.”

“She is not a witness your company can use to protect itself.”

“I agree.”

“She will not be placed in front of a room of attorneys.”

“No one will approach her without your permission.”

Maya looked at him, anger searching for resistance and finding none.

“That message was sent because of your family.”

“Yes.”

“You brought us into your office.”

“Yes.”

“You showed her the photograph.”

“I should not have.”

His immediate acceptance of responsibility made it harder to remain furious.

Maya picked up Ellie and held her.

The child rested her head against Maya’s shoulder.

“Are we playing hide-and-seek?” Ellie asked.

“No, baby.”

“Did I do something bad?”

Maya closed her eyes.

“No. You noticed something. That is never bad.”

Adrian looked away.

The statement seemed to reach him too.

Police arrived within twenty minutes.

A child-protection detective named Rachel Monroe met with Maya first. She explained that Ellie would not be questioned that day. A trained forensic interviewer could speak with her later through play, but only if Maya consented and prosecutors believed the information necessary.

The threatening message mattered more immediately.

Investigators traced it to a prepaid number purchased near Serena’s apartment.

The photograph had been taken by someone standing across from Ellie’s preschool.

Maya’s fear became physical.

It lived beneath her ribs and inside her teeth.

“Can we go home?” she asked.

Detective Monroe shook her head.

“Not until officers inspect the apartment.”

Adrian offered a hotel residence used for protected witnesses and visiting diplomats.

Maya refused.

“No.”

“It has independent security.”

“It belongs to you.”

“That is why it can be secured quickly.”

“I do not want Ellie sleeping inside another part of your world.”

Adrian accepted the words without defending himself.

Detective Monroe arranged temporary accommodation through the city’s witness-support program.

It was less luxurious than Adrian’s suite but independent of him.

That mattered to Maya.

Adrian placed no pressure on her.

Before she left, he asked only one question.

“Will you allow Marcus to coordinate with the police regarding transportation to school?”

“Police transportation only.”

“All right.”

Ellie reached toward him from Maya’s arms.

“My picture.”

Adrian had left it on his desk.

He retrieved the drawing and handed it to her.

Ellie shook her head.

“It’s yours.”

He looked at the purple dog and the three figures beneath the sun.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t lose it.”

“I won’t.”

Lucas Cross issued a statement before midnight.

He admitted entering Serena’s dressing suite but claimed he had been delivering trust documents at Adrian’s request. According to Lucas, Serena asked for advice about a future prenuptial agreement because she feared Adrian would control her financially after marriage.

The prosthetic case, he said, had appeared to contain wardrobe items.

He denied knowing the pregnancy was false.

He also denied sending the message to Maya.

The following morning, he appeared voluntarily at Cross Meridian headquarters.

Adrian met him in the executive boardroom with Marcus, family attorney Eleanor Price, and two independent directors.

Maya was not present.

But later, Eleanor would describe the meeting to her as the moment the Cross family stopped pretending its fractures were private.

Lucas entered wearing a charcoal suit.

His socks were black.

“You suspended my access,” he said.

“Temporarily,” Adrian replied.

“You had no authority.”

“I have executive authority over the company’s security system.”

“I am chief financial officer.”

“You are visible on recovered footage assisting a woman who forged medical records to obtain access to our family trust.”

Lucas placed both hands on the table.

“I gave Serena a folder.”

“What was inside?”

“A summary of the marital provisions.”

“Why?”

“She asked.”

“You barely knew her.”

“She was going to become part of the family.”

“Did you know she was wearing a prosthetic?”

“No.”

“Ellie Torres heard you discuss making the belly look real.”

Lucas laughed.

“You are accusing me based on a four-year-old’s interpretation?”

“No. I am asking based on her statement and security footage.”

“A child who belongs to an employee you have suddenly decided to sponsor.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Do not speak about Maya or Ellie as though they are assets.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From appearing emotionally compromised after Serena humiliated you.”

Lucas looked toward the independent directors.

“Within twenty-four hours, Adrian paid a hotel server’s tuition and brought her child into his private office. Reporters are already asking whether this was staged.”

Adrian stood.

“By whom?”

Lucas did not answer.

The family attorney opened the trust documents.

The Cross Family Inheritance Fund had been created by Adrian’s grandfather, Malcolm Cross, who believed marriage and children would make Adrian more “human” and therefore more fit to manage the family’s philanthropic assets.

The trust contained an old and poorly designed provision.

If Adrian married, his spouse would become provisional co-steward of the charitable trust thirty days after the marriage unless she signed a waiver.

The provision had been intended to prevent Adrian from isolating himself and using the fund entirely for business influence.

In reality, it created a door.

Serena planned to enter through it.

Eleanor explained that the trust could not give Serena direct access to Adrian’s commercial fortune, but co-steward status would allow her to approve grants, appoint advisers, and influence several family-controlled foundations.

Those organizations owned significant voting interests in Cross Meridian Holdings.

A corrupt spouse could not empty the accounts alone.

But with help from an existing trustee, she could change control.

Lucas was an existing trustee.

Adrian looked at his cousin.

“You provided her with the stewardship summary.”

“As prospective family.”

“Did you discuss the waiver?”

“Yes.”

“Did you advise her not to sign it?”

Lucas leaned back.

“I advised her to obtain independent counsel.”

Eleanor produced an email recovered from Serena’s folder.

It came from an account registered to a legal consultant used by Lucas.

The waiver must not be executed. Once the thirty-day period expires, replacement trustees can be appointed by majority vote.

Lucas read the screen.

“That is not my account.”

“The consultant reports to you,” Eleanor said.

“He reports to dozens of executives.”

“His billing entries were charged to your private office.”

Lucas’s face remained composed.

Adrian had known him since childhood.

They learned to sail together.

They buried Malcolm together.

Lucas had stood beside Adrian’s hospital bed after the accident that killed Adrian’s parents.

For years, Adrian mistook history for loyalty.

“Why?” Adrian asked.

Lucas looked almost offended.

“You have not proven anything.”

“Why help Serena?”

“I did not.”

“Why access the dressing floor?”

“She requested documents.”

“Why were the primary security files deleted?”

“I don’t manage hotel security.”

“But your executive credential was used.”

“Credentials can be copied.”

Adrian heard the pattern.

Every answer created distance from the act without offering an innocent explanation.

He suspended Lucas from the company and the trust pending investigation.

Lucas left calmly.

That calm lasted until he reached the lobby.

Reporters were waiting.

Someone had informed them of the meeting.

Lucas stopped before the cameras.

“I am deeply concerned that Adrian Cross is being manipulated during a period of understandable emotional distress,” he announced. “The young mother and child involved in the gala deserve privacy, but questions must be asked about why they are being financially rewarded.”

The statement reached Maya’s phone before Adrian could warn her.

By afternoon, strangers had found her social-media accounts.

Some called Ellie brave.

Others called her coached.

One post claimed Maya deliberately sent her daughter upstairs to spy on Serena.

Another accused Maya of seducing Adrian after helping destroy his engagement.

Maya closed every account.

Her nursing school requested a meeting.

The administrator showed her an anonymous complaint alleging that Maya had accepted improper financial benefits from a patient-connected donor and used her child to obtain special treatment.

“Adrian Cross is not a patient,” Maya said.

“He owns facilities associated with our clinical network.”

“I did not ask him for support.”

“But you accepted it.”

“The independent review has not occurred.”

The administrator removed her glasses.

“Until it does, your tuition account is under review.”

“If the scholarship is rejected, I will arrange a payment plan.”

“There are also concerns about publicity affecting clinical placements.”

Maya understood.

They were afraid she would bring cameras.

They were not investigating ethics.

They were protecting reputation.

She left the meeting with no guarantee she could continue the semester.

At the protected apartment, Ellie was building a castle from cereal boxes when someone knocked.

Police were stationed downstairs.

Maya checked the camera.

Serena Vale stood outside.

No lawyer.

No security.

Only Serena in a black coat, her face pale beneath oversized sunglasses.

Maya called Detective Monroe.

Officers entered the corridor immediately.

Serena raised both hands.

“I came to talk.”

“You are not supposed to contact potential witnesses,” the detective said.

“I need five minutes.”

Maya remained behind the locked door.

Serena looked toward the camera.

“Lucas is going to destroy both of us.”

Detective Monroe ordered her to leave.

Serena spoke louder.

“He didn’t plan only the fake pregnancy. He planned what happened after Adrian married me.”

Maya opened the door but stayed behind the chain.

“What happened after?”

May you like

Serena looked directly at her.

“Adrian was never supposed to remain in control long enough to discover the truth.”
