Chapter 5 - THE GIRL WHO FOLLOWED THE YELLOW ARROWS
The police warned Maya to change Ellie’s preschool immediately.
She did more.
She withdrew Ellie temporarily and moved into a confidential family residence arranged through the city.
The apartment had plain furniture, reinforced doors, and no view worth remembering.
Ellie asked why they were sleeping somewhere new.
Maya told her the truth in words a four-year-old could carry.
“Some adults are angry because you noticed something they wanted hidden.”
“Did I make them angry?”
“They made themselves angry.”
“Are they bad?”
“They are making unsafe choices.”
“Is Mr. Adrian safe?”
Maya hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Then why can’t we stay at his hotel?”
“Because safe people can live inside unsafe situations.”
Ellie accepted that more easily than most adults would have.
Chloe Vance was found two days later.
She had rented a room at a roadside motel and attempted to leave the state.
Inside her vehicle, police discovered photographs of Maya, Ellie, Adrian, and the Rosebridge executive entrance.
Chloe denied trying to abduct Ellie.
She claimed Lucas hired her to deliver the silver dress as a warning.
Lucas denied knowing her.
Then investigators found payments from a consulting account controlled by his office.
Chloe changed her statement.
She admitted the car had been intended to take Ellie to a private suite at the Grand Meridian.
“She wasn’t going to be hurt,” Chloe insisted.
“What was supposed to happen?” Detective Monroe asked.
“Someone was going to record her saying her mother told her to lie.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who gave you the script?”
Chloe looked at her attorney.
The interview ended.
The hotel suite had been booked under the name of a Rosebridge administrator.
Inside, police found a small table, children’s snacks, toys, and a camera positioned behind a mirror.
The plan was not to injure Ellie.
It was to manufacture another performance.
A frightened child would be prompted to say Maya had coached her.
The video would destroy the credibility of the only independent witness who placed Lucas inside Serena’s dressing room.
Adrian called Maya after Chloe’s arrest.
“I am sorry.”
“You did not send the car.”
“My cousin did.”
“We don’t know that yet.”
“I know him.”
“You also thought you knew Serena.”
The sentence came out sharper than Maya intended.
Adrian did not defend himself.
“You are right.”
She pressed her fingers against her forehead.
“I’m sorry.”
“Do not apologize.”
“I’m angry.”
“You should be.”
“My daughter cannot go to school.”
“I know.”
“I lost my job.”
“I know.”
“My clinical placement is gone.”
“We are providing every Rosebridge record to your attorney.”
“That does not restore the weeks I’m losing.”
“No.”
Again, he refused to promise what he could not guarantee.
Maya almost wanted him to become arrogant.
Anger would have been easier if he behaved like the billionaire newspapers described.
Instead, Adrian absorbed the truth without asking her to reduce it.
“I need distance,” she said.
His silence lasted several seconds.
“All right.”
“I don’t know how long.”
“All right.”
“Please stop calling.”
“I will.”
He kept the promise.
For six weeks, Maya heard nothing from him directly.
Cross Meridian’s auditors provided documents through Daniel Cho.
The scholarship committee awarded funding to nine hotel employees.
Maya was one of them.
Her application ranked third.
The committee included nurses, educators, hotel employees, and no Cross family members.
Maya accepted.
Rosebridge’s decision to terminate her placement was overturned after state investigators found the hospital had retaliated against a student who reported legitimate patient-safety concerns.
Dr. Lang was suspended.
The false executive suite was closed.
Tessa Morgan joined a civil lawsuit with twelve other patients whose records had been manipulated.
Maya began a new placement at Mercy Community Hospital.
No crystal lobby.
No private fertility wing.
The building was old, crowded, and honest about its limitations.
She loved it.
Ellie returned to school with a police-approved safety plan.
The teachers placed yellow arrows along the hallway so children could find the main office during emergencies.
Ellie memorized every arrow.
“Yellow means safe,” she told Maya.
One rainy afternoon, the school alarm activated after a maintenance worker accidentally triggered a security sensor.
Children followed teachers toward the office.
Ellie saw a woman standing near the side exit.
Chloe had been released on bail under home monitoring.
The woman was not Chloe.
She was Serena.
Serena had entered using the name of a volunteer arts instructor.
She crouched near Ellie.
“I need to talk to you.”
Ellie stepped backward.
“Yellow means safe.”
She turned and followed the arrows.
Serena followed.
A teacher saw them and called security.
Serena was detained before reaching the main office.
She carried no weapon.
Inside her bag were Lucas’s financial records and a voice recorder.
She claimed she came because Lucas intended to have her killed.
Maya arrived twenty minutes later.
She found Ellie sitting in the principal’s office eating crackers.
Her daughter looked up.
“I followed yellow.”
Maya dropped to her knees and held her.
“You did exactly right.”
Serena waited inside a separate room with police.
She requested to speak with Maya.
Detective Monroe advised against it.
Maya agreed anyway, through a video connection.
Serena appeared on the screen.
Her hair was unstyled. Her face showed no makeup.
She looked less like the woman from the silver gown and more like someone who had spent months sleeping beside consequences.
“I wasn’t trying to take Ellie,” Serena said.
“You entered her school under a false name.”
“Because the police are watching my apartment.”
“They are watching because you committed fraud.”
“I need protection.”
“Then speak to prosecutors.”
“Lucas has people inside the Cross board, Rosebridge, and the hotel. He knows where I am before my attorney does.”
“What do you want from me?”
“I want Adrian to believe me.”
“Call him.”
“He won’t take my calls.”
“That is not my responsibility.”
Serena pressed a hand against the table.
“The documents in my bag prove Lucas created the false incapacity report.”
“Give them to police.”
“He also created a replacement trust amendment. It names him permanent executive steward if Adrian is declared unfit.”
“Then give it to police.”
“It has Adrian’s signature.”
Maya went still.
“Is it real?”
“No.”

“But Lucas plans to use it at the Cross Meridian board meeting tomorrow morning.”
