Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

Jack answered.

“Hello?”

Vincent's voice was quiet.

“You found the ticket.”

Jack's grip tightened.

“How do you know?”

“Because Rachel wasn't as careful as she thought.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Where are you?”

“Not where you think.”

Jack said,

“What happened to Daniel?”

Vincent paused.

“Come to the lake.”

“Why?”

“Because you deserve to hear what your father never told you.”

The call ended.

Jack looked at Evelyn.

“We're going.”

She nodded.

Sophie stood beside them.

“No.”

Jack looked down.

“You're staying with Mrs. Alvarez.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I want to come.”

Jack crouched.

“This isn't safe.”

She looked at him seriously.

“Then don't leave me.”

Jack hugged her.

“I won't.”

They drove north before sunrise.

The lake house stood exactly where Rachel had described it years earlier.

Small.

Weathered.

Surrounded by pine trees.

Jack stopped at the front door.

A silver bracelet hung from the handle.

The same bracelet Arthur wore in the photograph.

Evelyn touched it.

“This belonged to my father.”

Jack nodded.

Inside, everything smelled like dust and cedar.

On the mantel stood a photograph.

Rachel at fourteen.

Martha beside her.

And a man Jack recognized immediately.

Daniel Bennett.

He was alive in the photograph.

And standing beside him was Jack's father.

Evelyn found a box beneath the table.

Inside were receipts, photographs, and letters.

One letter was addressed to Rachel.

Jack opened it.

You deserve to know why your mother left Chicago.

He read silently.

Martha had discovered that Vincent was stealing from Hartwell.

Daniel helped her collect evidence.

Arthur discovered what they were doing.

Instead of turning them over, Arthur offered protection.

But Vincent retaliated.

He threatened Daniel.

Martha fled with Rachel.

Daniel stayed behind to protect the evidence.

Then he disappeared.

Jack looked up.

“So Daniel didn't abandon Rachel.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“He was trying to protect her.”

A floorboard creaked.

Both turned.

Vincent stood in the doorway.

He looked older than Evelyn remembered.

Tired.

Not dangerous.

Just exhausted.

Jack stepped forward.

“You knew where he was.”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Dead.”

Jack's jaw tightened.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“How?”

Vincent looked down.

“Cancer.”

Jack stared at him.

“Why didn't Rachel know?”

“Because Daniel asked me not to tell her.”

“Why?”

“He believed Vincent's enemies would use her.”

Jack shook his head.

“You're Vincent.”

The older man's expression broke.

“I know.”

Evelyn stepped between them.

“What did my uncle do?”

Vincent looked at her.

“I stole the money.”

Evelyn froze.

“But I didn't steal it alone.”

He pointed toward the box.

“The ledger proves who helped me.”

Jack opened it.

A second document lay beneath the letters.

A list of names.

One of them was Arthur Hart.

Jack stared.

“So my wife believed your father was guilty.”

“Yes.”

“But he wasn't?”

“He covered it up.”

“Why?”

Vincent swallowed.

“Because the person behind the fraud threatened Rachel.”

Evelyn looked confused.

“Who?”

Vincent didn't answer.

He pointed to the final page.

There was one signature.

Not Vincent's.

Not Arthur's.

Not Daniel's.

It belonged to a man named Richard Cole.

Evelyn knew the name.

Hartwell's current chairman.

The same man who had signed Jack's termination.

Her face went pale.

“He's still with the company.”

Vincent nodded.

“He was there in 1991.”

Jack understood.

“He's the one who wanted the watch.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vincent looked at him.

“Because the watch contains a compartment.”

Jack opened his mouth.

The old pocket watch.

The one he had carried for years.

Vincent continued.

“Your wife didn't give you the watch because it was sentimental.”

“She knew.”

“She knew everything.”

Jack looked down.

The back of the watch suddenly felt heavier.

He opened it.

The mechanism appeared ordinary.

Vincent reached forward.

“Press the hinge.”

Jack did.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

A bank account number.

And one sentence.

The original ledger is not in the lake house. It is where Arthur trusted no one to look.

Evelyn looked at Vincent.

“Where?”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“The Hartwell Grand.”

Jack's phone rang.

Richard Cole.

Jack answered.

Cole said only six words.

“Bring Evelyn. Leave the girl behind.”

Jack's face hardened.

“No.”

Cole's voice became colder.

“Then you will never learn why Rachel died.”

The call ended.

Evelyn stared at Jack.

“What did he mean?”

May you like

Jack didn't answer.

Because for the first time, he wondered whether Rachel's death had truly been natural.
