Plot twist

Chapter 8 - WHAT RACHEL LEFT BEHIND

They returned to Chicago that night.

Jack refused to leave Sophie alone.

He brought her to Mrs. Alvarez's apartment.

Evelyn went with him.

Before they left, Sophie handed Evelyn her drawing.

“You need this.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Why?”

“Because Dad gets scared when he thinks he's alone.”

Evelyn looked at Jack.

Jack looked embarrassed.

“She worries too much.”

Sophie shrugged.

“That's my job.”

At the hotel, Evelyn and Jack went to Arthur's old office.

The room had been renovated twice.

But the original fireplace remained.

Evelyn remembered something.

“My father never let anyone clean the fireplace.”

Jack examined the stones.

One was loose.

He pulled it.

A narrow compartment appeared.

Inside was a leather-bound ledger.

The original.

Jack opened it.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Transfers.

Then they found the truth.

Richard Cole had created shell companies.

Vincent had helped move money.

Arthur discovered it.

But instead of exposing Cole immediately, Arthur used the records to force him into silence.

Cole retaliated by threatening Daniel.

Daniel disappeared.

Martha fled.

Arthur created the trust for Rachel.

But there was one more document.

A letter from Arthur to Rachel.

This one was never sent.

I failed you because I was afraid.

I thought protecting you meant hiding the truth.

Your mother deserved better.

Your father deserved better.

And you deserved the chance to know them both.

Jack sat down.

Rachel had spent her life believing she had been abandoned.

And Arthur had spent his life believing silence was protection.

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“He loved her.”

Jack nodded.

“He just loved badly.”

Then the door opened.

Richard Cole entered.

Two security guards stood behind him.

He looked at the ledger.

“You found it.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You destroyed three families to protect a company.”

Cole shook his head.

“No. Your father did.”

“He tried to protect people.”

“He protected his reputation.”

Cole looked at Jack.

“And Rachel knew too much.”

Jack stood.

“What did you do to her?”

Cole's expression changed.

“I didn't kill Rachel.”

Jack moved closer.

“Then what happened?”

“She discovered the ledger.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“When?”

“Six weeks before she died.”

Jack stopped.

Six weeks.

The exact period Rachel had been acting strangely.

She had told him she was tired.

She had started keeping notes.

She had asked him to promise that Sophie would always know how much she was loved.

Jack remembered.

He had thought it was anxiety.

Now he understood.

Cole continued.

“She planned to expose me.”

“What stopped her?”

Cole smiled faintly.

“Nothing.”

That answer confused Jack.

“Then why did she die?”

Cole looked toward Evelyn.

“Because your father moved her evidence before she could use it.”

Evelyn's face tightened.

“Where?”

Cole pointed toward the watch.

Jack held it up.

“The bank account?”

Cole nodded.

“Rachel transferred everything into a trust.”

Evelyn understood.

“The Bennett Trust.”

“Yes.”

Jack stared at the ledger.

“So Rachel knew the truth.”

“She knew enough.”

“And she left it for Sophie?”

Cole smiled.

“Not Sophie.”

Jack frowned.

“For whom, then?”

Cole's eyes moved to Evelyn.

“For you.”

Silence.

“Why me?”

“Because Rachel believed you were the only person strong enough to protect her daughter from your own family.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“She trusted me?”

“She trusted the woman she thought you could become.”

Cole reached into his coat.

Jack tensed.

But he pulled out a photograph.

Rachel.

Pregnant.

Standing outside the Hartwell Grand.

On the back was written:

If I don't come home, Evelyn Hart will understand.

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

“I never met her.”

Cole shook his head.

“You did.”

Evelyn froze.

“When?”

“Six weeks before her death.”

She remembered.

A woman had approached her outside the hotel.

A brunette.

Pregnant.

She had asked about Arthur.

Evelyn had dismissed her.

She had been twenty-nine and drowning in work.

She had forgotten.

Now she remembered Rachel's face.

The slight smile.

The blue bracelet.

The question:

Do you believe your father always tells you the truth?

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Oh God.”

Jack took her hand.

Cole watched them.

Then his expression changed.

“There's something else.”

Jack looked at him.

“What?”

Cole whispered,

“Rachel didn't leave the final evidence here.”

He looked toward the hotel ballroom.

“She hid it where the whole family would be forced to see it.”

The lights suddenly went out.

Sophie screamed somewhere downstairs.

Jack ran.
