Part 1: The Chilled Basin

“Silver lining, darling, you finally got a proper rinse.”

My ex-husband’s mother, Diane Whitmore, flashed a mocking grin as she raised a heavy, gleaming pail.

She poured the icy, grimy water straight over my head.

The foul liquid cascaded through my hair and traced cold paths down my neck, soaking my flowing maternity gown.

The soft fabric turned dark and clung tightly against my rounded seven-month belly.

For a heartbeat, the elegant dining room fell utterly still.

My ex-husband, Grant Whitmore, stayed seated in his plush chair.

He simply reclined, swirling his wine with a faint, amused smirk as if my public shaming were a high-end spectacle.

Diane set the empty silver pail aside, her diamond necklace catching the light from the overhead crystal chandelier.

"At least now you're freshened up," she added with fake sweetness.

Her husband, Richard, let out a low chuckle from the head of the table.

Grant's sister, Vanessa, pressed a perfectly groomed hand to her lips, feigning surprise while her eyes sparkled with spite.

I slowly pushed a strand of soaked, murky hair from my face.

Inside, our baby stirred with a strong kick.

That tiny reminder was what kept me steady in my chair.

Grant exhaled heavily, adjusting his bow tie.

“Elena, please don’t turn this into a drama. Mother was only teasing.”

“Teasing?” I murmured, my voice barely audible.

Diane cocked her head, smoothing her blue sequin dress.

“Girls from humble backgrounds do tend to overreact, don’t they?”

I pulled my phone out of my soaked handbag beneath the table.

I didn't call for a ride, and I didn't type a message to a friend.

I pressed the master override button on my secure global banking application.

Suddenly, every cell phone at the table buzzed in unison with an identical, high-pitched emergency alert.
