The sudden, synchronized ringing cut through Diane’s sharp laughter instantly.

Grant’s smirk evaporated as he pulled his device from his velvet jacket.

"What is this?" he muttered, his eyes widening as he read the screen. "A global corporate lockout?"

Richard stood up so fast his wine glass rattled against the porcelain plate.

"My terminal just deactivated," Richard whispered, his face turning an ashen gray. "The main server at Whitmore Enterprises is refusing my clearance."

Diane laughed nervously, clutching her pearls. "Oh, don't be ridiculous, Richard. It must be a server glitch."

"It's not a glitch, Diane," I said, my voice rising slightly, entirely calm and devoid of tears.

Vanessa looked at her phone, her perfectly manicured hand beginning to shake violently.

"Grant..." she gasped, her voice cracking with terror. "Look at the legal header on the notice. It’s from the Vanguard Trust Group."

Grant stared at the screen, then looked up at me, his chest heaving with rapid, uneven breaths.

"Vanguard is our primary institutional investor," he stammered, taking a panicked step toward me. "They own sixty percent of our voting shares. Why would they lock us out?"

"Because I am Vanguard, Grant," I said flatly.
