Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE HARRINGTON EMPIRE CRACKED

Zachary disappeared the next morning.

His phone went offline.

His car was missing.

Bianca's apartment was empty.

Donald claimed he didn't know where his son was.

Beatrice claimed she was sick.

And Harrington Construction suddenly announced that Donald was taking an “indefinite medical leave.”

My brothers didn't believe the timing was coincidental.

Neither did I.

At noon, Xavier received a call.

“Federal investigators are reviewing several transactions involving Harrington Construction.”

I looked at him.

“Is that because of us?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“We didn't report anything.”

“Then who did?”

He looked toward Dominic.

Dominic raised his hand.

“I did.”

I stared.

“You?”

“I gave them documents.”

“Everything?”

“Only what we could verify.”

I felt conflicted.

The Harrington family had hurt me.

But this wasn't about revenge anymore.

It was about truth.

And if the evidence showed crimes had occurred, there needed to be consequences.

That afternoon, Donald called me.

His voice sounded different.

Older.

Broken.

“Genevieve.”

“Yes?”

“Can we meet?”

I almost refused.

Then I remembered my father's letter.

Truth.

I agreed.

We met at a quiet restaurant.

Donald arrived alone.

No bodyguards.

No assistants.

No arrogant smile.

He looked exhausted.

“I owe you an apology.”

I waited.

“I should have stopped Zachary years ago.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I knew he treated you badly.”

I felt anger rise.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

He nodded.

“You're right.”

That answer surprised me.

“I told myself he would grow up.”

“He's thirty-eight.”

“I know.”

“He tied me to a beam.”

Donald closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“He hit me.”

“I know.”

I leaned forward.

“Then why did you call me?”

He looked at me.

“Because I finally realized the family I spent my life protecting was destroying itself.”

I said nothing.

He reached into his jacket.

He placed an envelope on the table.

“What is this?”

“Your father's settlement.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Your father was owed money.”

“How much?”

Donald swallowed.

“With interest?”

“Yes.”

“Over thirty million.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Where is it?”

He looked at me.

“Most of it was never paid.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

“Afraid of my father?”

“Afraid of losing everything.”

I stared at him.

“You already did.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

The restaurant door opened.

Two federal agents entered.

Donald looked at them.

Then at me.

“They're here for me.”

I didn't move.

He stood.

Before leaving, he turned.

“Genevieve.”

“Yes?”

“I didn't arrange your marriage to Zachary.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“I wanted you to marry into the family.”

My heart stopped.

“But I didn't force him.”

I stared.

“He chose you.”

That somehow made everything worse.

Because it meant Zachary had once chosen me.

And then chosen to become the man who hurt me.

Donald left with the agents.

I remained at the table.

My phone buzzed.

Jonathan.

Where are you?

I replied.

With Donald.

His response came immediately.

Are you safe?

Yes.

Then another message appeared.

Zachary just surfaced.

My heart raced.

Where?

Jonathan sent an address.

A private warehouse near the river.

I stood.

I knew I shouldn't go.

But I needed to know.

When we arrived, the police were already there.

Zachary stood beside a black vehicle.

His hands were raised.

Bianca was beside him.

Several boxes were stacked behind them.

Documents.

Computers.

Cash.

He saw me.

For a second, his expression softened.

“Genevieve.”

I stopped several feet away.

“What were you going to do?”

He looked away.

“I was going to leave.”

“With her?”

He didn't answer.

Bianca did.

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“You knew?”

She stared at the ground.

“Yes.”

“About the money?”

“Yes.”

“About the accounts?”

She nodded.

“Did you know about the affair?”

She looked confused.

“What?”

I almost smiled.

The absurdity of it.

“You were his mistress.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't know he was married?”

She looked at me.

“I knew.”

I turned away.

There was nothing left to say.

Zachary was arrested.

Bianca was questioned.

The warehouse was secured.

And the Harrington empire began collapsing publicly.

But as I watched my husband being taken away, I felt something unexpected.

Not satisfaction.

Not triumph.

May you like

Relief.

For the first time in years, I could breathe.
