Plot twist

Chapter 3 - THE RECORDING MARGARET HID

Claire moved quickly.

“Mom, take Ethan and Sophie into the upstairs bedroom.”

Margaret grabbed the children's hands.

“What are you going to do?”

“Stay away from the doors.”

Claire switched off every light.

The knocking stopped.

For several seconds, the house became completely silent.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Claire, I know you're inside.”

She didn't answer.

“You don't need to make this ugly.”

Claire looked at the security camera.

Daniel was standing near the back entrance.

He wasn't alone.

Robert Vale stood behind him.

Claire's heart hammered.

She quietly called 911.

The dispatcher instructed her to remain inside and avoid confrontation.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“I know you're scared.”

Claire almost laughed.

He had no idea.

She wasn't scared of him anymore.

She was scared of what he might do if he realized how much she had discovered.

Then Daniel said something that made her blood run cold.

“Your mother knows what happened.”

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Margaret had stopped moving.

Daniel continued.

“She knows where the documents are.”

Claire whispered, “What documents?”

Margaret looked down.

Claire understood immediately.

Her mother was hiding something.

Daniel knocked again.

“Margaret.”

The older woman closed her eyes.

“Don't answer him,” Claire whispered.

But Daniel continued.

“You promised me you wouldn't tell her.”

Margaret's face crumpled.

Claire felt betrayed.

Not by her mother.

By the fact that there were still pieces of the story she didn't know.

The police sirens finally appeared in the distance.

Daniel heard them.

“Claire, this isn't finished.”

He turned and walked toward the SUV.

Robert followed.

Within seconds, they were gone.

The police arrived moments later.

Officers searched the property but found no one.

Claire gave them the security footage.

She also showed them the financial records.

One officer advised her to preserve every piece of evidence and contact her attorney immediately.

After they left, Claire went upstairs.

Margaret sat on the edge of the bed.

“Tell me.”

Her mother looked at her.

“About what?”

“Whatever Daniel thinks you know.”

Margaret was silent.

Then she reached beneath the mattress.

She pulled out a small digital recorder.

Claire stared.

“You recorded him?”

“Some of it.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure whether it would make things worse.”

Claire sat beside her.

“What does it contain?”

Margaret handed it over.

“I don't know.”

Claire pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Daniel's voice.

“You don't need to understand the documents.”

Margaret's voice followed.

“I won't sign anything.”

“You don't have to sign. You only need to keep quiet.”

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting Claire.”

“You're lying.”

A chair scraped.

Then Vivian's voice appeared.

“Margaret, nobody is hurting you.”

Margaret said, “My wrist is bruised.”

Vivian laughed softly.

“You bruise easily.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

The recording continued.

Daniel said, “If Claire finds out about the loan, she'll destroy everything.”

Margaret asked, “What loan?”

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that changed the entire case.

“The loan is already secured against the house.”

Claire stopped the recording.

“What?”

Margaret looked at her.

“I didn't know what it meant.”

Claire immediately called Sarah.

Sarah answered.

“Tell me you haven't signed anything.”

“I haven't.”

“Good.”

“Sarah, there's a loan secured against my house.”

Sarah paused.

“Are you sure?”

“I have documents.”

“Send them.”

Claire did.

Sarah called back twenty minutes later.

“Claire, this is serious.”

“How serious?”

“The documents appear to show a lien against the property.”

“But I didn't authorize it.”

“I know.”

“Can they take the house?”

“Not if we can prove fraud.”

Claire exhaled.

Then Sarah asked:

“Do you know who witnessed the signature?”

Claire looked at the document.

There was a notary stamp.

The name was visible.

Robert Vale.

Claire closed her eyes.

“He notarized it.”

“That gives us another problem.”

“What?”

“Robert is listed as the notary, but his license expired last year.”

Claire stared at the screen.

“So the document is invalid.”

“Possibly.”

“Then why are they doing this?”

Sarah's voice became quiet.

“Because they may be trying to create the appearance of debt before they move money.”

Claire felt a cold wave move through her.

“Money from where?”

“Your assets.”

Claire thought about the investment property.

Her company.

The accounts.

The fake family company.

“This is bigger than the house.”

“I suspect it is.”

Sarah continued.

“Claire, I want you to understand something. If your husband is attempting to isolate your mother, control the children, and manipulate your finances, you need to treat this as a coordinated scheme.”

Claire looked at Margaret.

Her mother was staring at the floor.

“Mom.”

Margaret looked up.

“Do you know what they're trying to do?”

Her mother whispered:

“They want you to look unstable.”

Claire froze.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me that if you ever challenged him, he would tell the court that you were emotionally incapable of raising the children.”

Claire's jaw tightened.

“He said that?”

“He said he had already spoken to someone.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Claire turned to Sarah.

“Can you investigate Daniel's attorney?”

“I can find out who has contacted you.”

Claire nodded.

After the call, she sat quietly.

Then Ethan appeared in the doorway.

“Mom?”

Claire turned.

“What is it?”

“Is Daddy mad at Grandma?”

Claire forced a smile.

“Daddy is upset.”

“Did Grandma do something bad?”

Claire walked over and knelt.

“No.”

“Then why does Daddy yell?”

Claire hesitated.

“Sometimes grown-ups make choices that hurt other people.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Is Grandma going away?”

“No.”

Claire hugged him.

“Grandma is staying with us.”

Sophie appeared behind him.

“Forever?”

Claire smiled through tears.

“If she wants.”

Sophie nodded.

“She wants.”

Margaret laughed softly from the bedroom.

For the first time that day, the tension broke.

But only briefly.

At 2:18 a.m., Claire's phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

You should ask your mother why she was at St. Mary's Hospital seven years ago.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her mother noticed.

“What is it?”

Claire showed her.

Margaret's face changed.

“Mom?”

“I don't want to talk about that.”

“Why?”

“Because it has nothing to do with Daniel.”

Claire stared at her.

“Then why would they know?”

Margaret looked frightened.

“They know everything.”

“What happened at St. Mary's?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Your father was there.”

Claire froze.

“My father?”

“He wasn't dead yet.”

Claire's heart stopped.

Her father had supposedly died after a sudden heart attack seven years earlier.

But Margaret had never mentioned St. Mary's.

“What happened?”

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father didn't die from a heart attack.”

Claire stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Margaret whispered:

“He was poisoned.”

The room went silent.

And suddenly, the seven years of Claire's marriage looked very different.
