Chapter 6 - THE CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
Claire spent the entire night thinking about Daniel's final words.
When morning came, she called him.
He didn't answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then she received an email.
One attachment.
A photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside a teenage boy.
The boy looked about fourteen.
Claire recognized him.
She had seen him before.
Years ago.
At a family gathering.
Vivian had introduced him as a distant relative.
His name was Lucas.
Claire stared at the photograph.
The message contained only three words.
He is my son.
Claire's hands trembled.
Daniel had a child.
A child she had never known about.
She showed Margaret.
Her mother looked shocked.
“I remember him.”
“So do I.”
“Daniel told me Lucas was his nephew.”
“He lied.”
Claire immediately contacted Sarah.
Sarah advised her not to contact Lucas directly.
Instead, they searched public records.
Lucas had been born eight months before Claire met Daniel.
His mother was listed as Angela Bennett.
Claire recognized the surname.
Angela was Vivian's daughter.
Daniel's sister.
But if Lucas was Daniel's son and Angela was listed as his mother, the records had been falsified.
Claire stared at the birth certificate.
“Daniel's sister?”
Sarah nodded.
“This is complicated.”
Claire whispered:
“Why would she pretend to be his mother?”
Sarah looked at the records.
“Maybe because the child was born through a private adoption.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I remember Angela.”
Claire remembered the woman from family gatherings.
She had always been quiet.
She had disappeared shortly after Lucas was born.
Everyone had said she moved overseas.
Claire searched old photographs.
Angela was pregnant.
Then she disappeared.
Claire suddenly understood.
Daniel had not simply hidden a child.
His family had hidden the child's real parentage.
And Robert knew.
That explained the control.
That explained Daniel's fear.
But it didn't excuse what he had done.
Claire called Daniel again.
This time he answered.
“Where is Lucas?”
Daniel was silent.
“Daniel.”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Who has him?”
“Robert.”
Claire's voice became cold.
“Why?”
“Because Robert discovered that Lucas wasn't legally registered under his real parentage.”
“Why would that matter?”
“Because Lucas inherited something.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“Your father left shares.”
“In what?”
“Several companies.”
Claire realized what was happening.
Her father had left assets.
Daniel's family had been trying to control them.
And Lucas was connected somehow.
“What does Lucas own?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
“Because he's named in a trust.”
Claire felt her heart pound.
“How much?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Enough to make Robert kill for it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Now the pieces connected.
Her father had created a trust.
Robert wanted control.
Daniel had been trapped between them.
But there was still the question of why Daniel had targeted Claire.
“Why did you marry me?”
Silence.
“Daniel.”
“I loved you.”
Claire almost cried.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you try to take my house?”
“I needed collateral.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I was desperate.”
“You let your mother hurt mine.”
“I didn't know.”
“You knew.”
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire whispered:
“I can't forgive you.”
“I know.”
“Where is Lucas?”
“I'll tell you if you help me.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Help you?”
“Get him away from Robert.”
“Where is he?”
Daniel finally gave her an address.
A private boarding school outside Asheville.
Claire contacted law enforcement.
A team went with her.
They found Lucas safe.
He was confused.
He had believed Daniel was his uncle.
When Claire explained that she was trying to help, Lucas asked one question.
“Is my dad in trouble?”
Claire didn't know what to say.
“Yes.”
“Is he a bad person?”
Claire paused.
“He made terrible choices.”
Lucas looked down.
“Does he hate me?”
“No.”
That answer came from Daniel.
He had arrived unexpectedly with police.
He was arrested immediately.
But before being taken away, he looked at Lucas.
“I never hated you.”
Lucas stared at him.
“You lied to me.”
Daniel nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Lucas looked at him.
“You're always afraid.”
Daniel's face broke.
“Yes.”
He was taken away.
The investigation continued.
Robert disappeared.
Vivian disappeared.
Rachel Carter went into protective custody.
And Claire finally had enough evidence to understand the full scheme.
But then Sarah found something.
A trust document.
Claire's father had established it one year before his death.
The beneficiaries were Claire and Lucas.
Not Daniel.
Not Vivian.
Not Robert.
The trust was worth approximately $6 million.
And the controlling trustee?
Margaret Ellis.
Claire stared at the document.
“Mom knew.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I knew there was a trust.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Your father told me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew Robert would come after you.”
Claire sat down.
Margaret continued.
“He said you were safer if you believed the money was gone.”
Claire stared.
“My whole life has been built around a lie.”
“Not your whole life.”
Margaret touched her hand.
“Only the part your father wanted to protect.”
Claire looked at the trust.
Then at her mother.
“What happens now?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Now we stop hiding.”
That decision changed everything.
