Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF CARTER

The seventy-two hours of arrogant confidence the Carter family had displayed dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.
As the federal marshals flooded the platform, the heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Patricia’s wrists was the most satisfying sound Ryan had ever heard.
"Ryan, please!" she sobbed, her face wet with frantic, streaming tears as she fell to her knees on the Persian rug, her diamonds clinking uselessly against the floorboards.
"I did it to protect the house!"
"I didn't want us to lose the estate!"
"You didn't protect the house, Patricia," Ryan said, looking down at his stepmother with dead, unyielding eyes.
"You managed your greed, and you tried to sacrifice my father's life to pay for your luxury."
Dr. Sterling tried to lunge toward the private service exit behind the floral arrangements, his face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl of panic, but two heavily built marshals tackled him to the floor, pinning his navy-clad frame and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists.
The district attorney moved with a swift, mathematical precision that left no room for high-society influence or political bribes.
By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court had officially executed an emergency suspension of all Carter-Sterling operations.
Their personal assets were frozen, and their luxury estate was liquidated to pay the massive restitution fines to the employees' retirement fund.
Their family name was permanently erased from the city's corporate registries, and the logistics shipping lines were fully restored under the original Carter name, leaving the conspirators to face twenty-five years in a federal maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole.
I stood in the quiet of our living room, watching the warm afternoon sun paint the hardwood floors in shades of gold and amber.
The cold hallway and the terrifying voice of my stepmother's anger had burned away the final remnants of our naive submission, transforming us into the sovereign masters of our own destiny.
The old script of our family's silence was permanently destroyed.
