Chapter 6 - THE WITNESS WHO REFUSED TO DIE

Julian struck the vault door with his shoulder.

It did not move.

Elena covered her mouth with her sleeve while Genevieve searched the shelves.

“This vault has fire suppression,” Genevieve said.

“Beatrice disabled it during the jewelry renovation,” Julian replied. “Water damage was considered too expensive.”

Genevieve stared at him.

“That may be the most Vance sentence you’ve ever spoken.”

Even through the smoke, he almost smiled.

Elena found an emergency telephone beneath the desk.

The line was dead.

Julian removed a heavy bronze display stand from a shelf and drove it into the ventilation grille. Metal bent.

Smoke poured through faster.

“That made it worse,” Elena coughed.

“It gave us access to the shaft.”

The opening was too small for Julian but large enough for Genevieve.

He stacked document cases beneath it.

“You’re going through.”

She looked into the dark shaft.

“It drops behind the mechanical room.”

“You’ll find the manual release.”

“What if there’s someone outside?”

Julian handed her a jeweled ceremonial dagger from the vault collection.

Genevieve stared at it.

“This is ridiculous.”

“It is sharp.”

She climbed.

The scar across her abdomen pulled painfully as she entered the narrow opening, but she continued.

For years, Arthur had used her medical limitations to convince her that she was fragile. Now the same body he had cut carried her through the shaft.

She dropped into the mechanical room.

A masked man stood beside the vault controls.

Genevieve swung the flat side of the dagger into his wrist. He dropped the incendiary device he was holding.

She struck the alarm.

Security flooded the corridor.

The attacker escaped into a service elevator, but the vault opened.

Julian emerged and pulled Genevieve against him.

“You’re hurt.”

A thin line of blood crossed her palm.

“So are you.”

“I’m fine.”

“Then we’re both fine.”

The fire was contained before reaching the main tower.

Security footage showed the masked man using credentials assigned to Beatrice’s driver.

The driver had disappeared.

Beatrice denied involvement and claimed someone was framing her.

Investigators placed her under surveillance.

The following morning, Dr. Miriam Hale contacted Elena.

She was alive and living under another name in Maine.

She agreed to meet at a federal office in Portland.

Julian, Genevieve, and Elena traveled with investigators.

Miriam Hale was seventy-one, with silver hair and a tremor in both hands.

The moment she saw Genevieve, she began crying.

“I should have stopped them.”

“You tried,” Genevieve said.

“I resigned. That is not the same.”

Hale explained that Arthur removed her from the kidney procedure after she refused to approve Genevieve as a voluntary donor.

Vivian produced a psychiatric evaluation claiming Genevieve’s resistance came from an attachment disorder.

Beatrice’s foundation attorney provided a court waiver allowing Arthur to act as both guardian and donor advocate.

“Did Beatrice know what the waiver was for?” Elena asked.

“Her signature was on it.”

Hale preserved copies.

She also secretly recorded a preoperative conference.

Arthur’s voice was clear:

Chloe needs the kidney. The Roe girl exists in this family because she is compatible. Do not confuse purpose with cruelty.

Another surgeon asked what would happen if Genevieve spoke later.

Vivian answered:

We control her employment, records, and reputation. Where would she go?

Genevieve closed her eyes.

Julian reached for her but waited until she nodded.

Hale handed Elena the recording.

“There were others,” she said.

“How many?” Genevieve asked.

“Children? At least nine screened through the Sterling foundation. You were the only one adopted directly by the recipient family.”

“What happened to them?”

“Some were rejected as poor matches. Two disappeared from the program. One was Mia Reed.”

Genevieve gripped the table.

“Is she alive?”

“I don’t know.”

Hale had traced Mia’s file to a private research site owned by Vivian in Connecticut.

Before she could explain further, the office windows shattered.

A bullet struck Hale’s shoulder.

Agents pulled everyone to the floor.

A second shot hit the wall above Genevieve.

Julian covered her with his body.

The shooter fired from a parking structure across the street, then escaped before agents reached the roof.

Hale survived.

At the hospital, she insisted on completing her statement before surgery.

The attack transformed her from a reluctant witness into a furious one.

“They have spent years relying on fear,” she said. “I have already wasted enough life giving it to them.”

She provided the Connecticut address.

It belonged to a decommissioned Vance jewelry workshop purchased through the foundation and leased to Sterling Medical Research.

Julian stared at the ownership record.

Beatrice had approved the lease.

“This is why she tried to burn the vault.”

Federal agents searched the workshop.

They found abandoned clinical rooms, tissue-storage equipment, and a wall covered with compatibility charts.

Mia Reed’s number appeared beside a notation:

Transferred to long-term residential placement after adverse outcome.

No death certificate existed.

No discharge address appeared.

Another chart carried Chloe’s current medical data.

Beside it were Genevieve’s name and Emma’s.

Vivian had been searching for a new biological source to prolong Chloe’s life.

Agents also recovered a video from two weeks earlier.

Arthur and Vivian stood inside the workshop.

Arthur looked uneasy.

“We cannot use Genevieve again,” he said.

Vivian answered, “We used her before because it worked.”

“She is married to Julian Vance now.”

“Then we remind Julian who financed his legitimacy.”

The video ended.

Julian looked at Elena.

“What does that mean?”

Elena searched the remaining files.

She found a sealed birth-trust agreement signed shortly after Julian was born.

Beatrice had paid Julian’s biological mother to relinquish all claims, ensuring that he could be raised inside the Vance family despite being born from his father’s affair.

Vivian had arranged the agreement.

If exposed selectively, it could be manipulated to challenge Julian’s inheritance.

Beatrice and Vivian had been protecting each other’s secrets for more than thirty years.

Then Julian’s phone rang.

Chloe was calling.

Her voice was weak.

“My mother knows Miriam survived.”

“Where is Vivian?”

“With me.”

“Where?”

“St. Jude. Private transplant floor.”

A door opened on Chloe’s end.

She whispered quickly.

May you like

“She found Mia. She’s alive.”

The call disconnected.
