Plot twist

Chapter 8 - BENEATH THE ABANDONED SURGICAL WING

Genevieve did not go alone.

For twelve years, Arthur had depended on isolating her before making demands.

This time, she called Elena, federal investigators, and hospital security before leaving Chloe’s floor.

Still, Arthur had prepared for surveillance.

The old St. Jude surgical building stood beneath a condemned section of the hospital scheduled for demolition. Underground service tunnels connected it to the main campus.

Arthur ordered Genevieve to enter through the ambulance bay and leave her phone inside a locker.

A federal recording device had been sewn into the hem of her coat.

Agents followed through a maintenance tunnel.

Genevieve walked into the dark building carrying a case filled with copied evidence.

Julian sat bound to a chair inside an old operating theater.

Blood marked his temple, but he was conscious.

Lorraine Beck was tied beside him.

Vivian stood near the instrument table.

Arthur waited beneath the surgical lights.

“You were told to come alone,” he said.

“I did.”

He searched her coat but missed the recorder hidden in the hem.

“Where are the originals?”

“In the case.”

Vivian opened it.

The copies looked authentic.

Elena had reproduced the labels, seals, and storage drives.

Arthur examined Genevieve.

“You’ve lost weight.”

She felt the old instinct to lower her eyes.

She refused.

“You don’t get to evaluate my body anymore.”

“You would have died in foster care without us.”

“I survived your home.”

“We educated you. We gave you a profession.”

“So I could remain inside your hospital.”

Arthur’s composure slipped.

“You were impossible to manage after the kidney procedure.”

“I was a child who understood you had stolen from me.”

Vivian took out a syringe.

Genevieve’s body remembered before her mind did.

Her heart raced. The scars across her abdomen seemed to burn.

Julian pulled against his restraints.

“Do not touch her.”

Arthur struck him.

Genevieve stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Arthur smiled.

“There she is. The obedient girl.”

“No. The nurse assessing a violent man with no control left.”

His expression changed.

Genevieve looked toward Lorraine.

“You removed the original records before the archive fire.”

Lorraine nodded through her tears.

“Arthur ordered me to burn them. I took them instead.”

“Where are they?”

Vivian raised the syringe.

“Answer carefully.”

Lorraine closed her eyes.

“I sent them to the attorney general.”

Arthur turned on her.

“You lying—”

Julian drove both feet into Arthur’s knees.

The surgeon fell.

Vivian grabbed Genevieve.

The syringe pressed against her neck.

“Move and she dies,” Vivian shouted.

Federal agents heard through the recorder but did not have a clear entry.

Genevieve remained still.

“What is in it?” she asked.

“Enough sedative to make every accusation sound delusional.”

“You can drug me. You cannot erase the server.”

“The server is gone.”

“Chloe gave us access.”

Vivian’s face twisted.

“That weak, ungrateful girl.”

“She learned it from you.”

“I kept her alive.”

“You kept her dependent.”

Vivian pressed the needle harder.

Genevieve looked at Julian.

He had stopped fighting the ropes.

His eyes remained fixed on her, waiting for her decision rather than creating one over it.

Genevieve moved suddenly.

She trapped Vivian’s wrist between both hands and turned.

The needle entered Vivian’s own shoulder.

Vivian screamed.

The drug took effect quickly.

She fell against the operating table.

Arthur reached for the gun she dropped.

Julian overturned his chair into him.

Agents breached the doors.

Gunfire struck the ceiling.

Arthur escaped through the scrub corridor before officers sealed the rear passage.

Vivian was arrested.

Julian and Lorraine were freed.

Genevieve went directly to Julian.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“So are you.”

A small puncture marked Genevieve’s neck, but the needle had not delivered medication.

Julian touched it carefully.

“I thought she was going to—”

“She didn’t.”

His hands shook.

Genevieve held them.

“I need you not to become violent because you were afraid.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“You helped without taking the choice away from me.”

“I overturned a chair.”

“It was useful.”

Despite the chaos, he laughed.

Lorraine provided the location of the original ledgers.

She had placed them inside a secure deposit box under her daughter’s name.

The records documented every procedure, payment, and falsified consent.

They also showed that Arthur harvested bone marrow from Genevieve twice more than the file she possessed revealed.

He had concealed complications that could affect her health years later.

An independent medical team examined her.

The physician spoke carefully.

“You have reduced kidney function, but it is currently stable. Your liver has compensated well. We’ll need long-term monitoring.”

“Can I have children?” Genevieve asked.

Julian looked at her.

It was the first time either had spoken the question aloud.

“Pregnancy could carry elevated risks,” the physician said. “But there are many ways to build a family. You do not need to decide anything today.”

Genevieve nodded.

Arthur had stolen enough from her.

She would not let uncertainty steal decisions she had not yet made.

Federal agents searched every Sterling property.

Arthur remained missing.

Chloe called from the transplant floor.

“He contacted me.”

“What did he say?” Genevieve asked.

“He said Mom failed and everything depends on me now.”

“Do not leave your room.”

“I won’t.”

A nurse entered behind Chloe.

Genevieve recognized the woman from the Connecticut facility.

“Chloe, get away from her.”

The feed shook.

The nurse injected something into Chloe’s IV.

Alarms sounded.

The camera fell.

Arthur had placed another accomplice inside St. Jude.

By the time security reached the room, Chloe and the nurse were gone.

On the pillow lay a note.

A DAUGHTER REPAYS THE LIFE HER FATHER GAVE HER.

May you like

Arthur no longer needed Chloe as a patient.

He needed her as leverage.
