Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE CHURCH WHERE EMILIA SAID NO

Nobody took Emilia to St. Michael’s.

She asked to go.

That distinction created the argument.

“No.”

Elena said.

“No.”

Giovanni said.

I said:

“Ask why.”

Both looked at me.

Emilia sat between.

Police had intelligence Isabella might appear at memorial Mass for an old Moretti associate.

Salvatore possibly.

No certainty.

Emilia heard adults.

Of course.

“I want see place Dad was.”

“Not necessary.”

Elena said.

“I know.”

“Then?”

“I want to.”

She looked at Giovanni.

“He was baptized there.”

“Yes.”

“Did he go when kid?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Then I want see.”

Giovanni’s protective instinct rose.

“It is active investigation.”

Detective Price said:

“She would not be used as bait.”

Good.

“But public church event cannot be closed entirely.”

I asked Emilia:

“Are you asking to attend because you think Isabella wants you?”

“No.”

“Because you want prove not scared?”

Pause.

“Maybe.”

Important.

“Then that's not enough.”

She looked down.

“What would be enough?”

“To want place itself.”

She thought.

“I want know where Dad came from.”

There.

Not crime.

History.

Elena cried quietly.

Eventually, with police approval and controlled entry, we went afternoon before Mass.

Empty church.

No Isabella.

No trap.

Just stained glass.

Wood pews.

Candles.

Giovanni entered and visibly became twelve.

Memory does that.

He pointed.

“Matteo sat there during First Communion because he got moved for talking.”

Emilia smiled.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“He was terrible.”

“You said you loved him.”

“Both.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Where ring thing happen?”

Giovanni stopped.

“Basement.”

“Can I see?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Emilia stared.

He breathed.

“Sorry.”

Then:

“I don't want that part to become your inheritance.”

She frowned.

“But it happened.”

“Yes.”

“Then hiding isn't fix.”

My chest tightened.

Children.

Giovanni looked at me.

I almost smiled.

“You taught her?”

“No.”

“She arrived annoying.”

Elena laughed.

We went basement with church administrator and police.

Old social hall.

Folding tables.

Storage.

Nothing mystical.

Giovanni pointed toward a small side room.

“Father used it.”

“Men would come.”

“Ring.”

“Promise.”

“What promise?”

Emilia asked.

“Family before everything.”

She thought.

“That sounds good.”

Dangerous simplicity.

Giovanni crouched.

“Until family asks wrong thing.”

Her face changed.

“Then what?”

“You choose right thing.”

“Even if family mad?”

“Yes.”

“Even if they call you traitor?”

“Yes.”

“Dad did?”

Giovanni swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Then he wasn't weak.”

“No.”

This time without hesitation.

“He was braver than me.”

Emilia’s eyes filled.

Then slow clap came from stairwell.

Everyone turned.

Police moved.

Isabella stood halfway down.

Seventy-six.

Cream coat.

Pearls.

No weapon visible.

Hands raised.

Two officers behind had not seen her enter through upper side door.

“How touching.”

Giovanni went still.

“Isabella.”

She smiled.

“My beautiful children.”

Emilia stepped behind Elena.

Good.

Isabella saw.

“You look exactly like Matteo.”

“No.”

Emilia said.

Everyone froze.

Isabella blinked.

“I’m me.”

My throat tightened.

Good girl.

Police approached.

Isabella lifted hands higher.

“I came voluntarily.”

Detective Price appeared.

“You have counsel?”

“On way.”

“Then don't speak.”

Isabella laughed.

“I have been told not to speak by men my entire life.”

Interesting.

“Today it may help you.”

Price said.

I liked her.

Isabella looked at Giovanni.

“Your father would not recognize you.”

“Good.”

“You turned family into accountants and therapists.”

“Also good.”

“You let your wife control you.”

I stepped forward.

Giovanni touched my hand.

Not restraining.

Question.

I shook.

He released.

“I control me.”

he said.

Important.

Isabella looked at Emilia.

“Your father had duty.”

Emilia’s face tightened.

“No.”

“You do not understand.”

“He left.”

“Yes.”

“He abandoned blood.”

“He loved me.”

Isabella smiled sadly.

“Love is not enough.”

Emilia looked toward me.

Then Giovanni.

Then Elena.

“What else?”

Isabella seemed surprised.

“What?”

“If love isn't enough, what?”

“Duty.”

“To who?”

“Family.”

“I’m family.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you scare my mom?”

Silence.

“Why watch me?”

“I protected you.”

There.

Always.

“From what?”

“Chaos.”

“Giovanni.”

“He was dangerous.”

Emilia looked at my husband.

“He is.”

I almost laughed.

Giovanni frowned.

“Thank you.”

She continued:

“But Mom said hiding people made worse.”

Isabella’s mouth tightened.

“She filled your head.”

“No.”

Emilia touched Saint Michael medal.

“Dad did.”

Then she pulled chain over head.

Everyone watched.

She held medal.

Not ring.

Her father’s.

“I don't want red ring.”

Isabella looked wounded.

As though child declined crown.

“You don't know what you’re refusing.”

“Yes.”

Emilia whispered.

“Men telling me who to be because of dead people.”

Silence.

Giovanni’s eyes filled.

Isabella turned to him.

“You allow this disrespect?”

He almost smiled.

“I do not allow her anything.”

There.

“She is not mine.”

“She is my niece if she wants.”

“Nothing more.”

Isabella’s face hardened.

“You were always the wrong son.”

Giovanni absorbed.

Then:

“Maybe.”

No fight.

That destroyed more power than shouting.

Police arrested Isabella on charges related to conspiracy, intimidation, and obstruction based on Serrano’s evidence and recovered communications.

She did not resist.

At top stairs she looked back.

“Barone will not forgive this.”

Giovanni answered:

“That is his problem.”

Then she was gone.

We thought church visit ended.

Detective found small package beneath old cabinet in side room after Isabella mentioned “what she was refusing.”

Inside no bomb.

No weapon.

One red ring.

Salvatore’s.

And a note:

MATTEO TOOK WHAT WAS MINE.

NOW HIS DAUGHTER WILL RETURN IT.

Barone had left ring.

Why?

Symbol.

Demand.

But another object sat beneath.

A Polaroid photograph.

Matteo.

Much younger.

Beside Isabella.

Salvatore.

Giovanni’s father.

On back:

THE NIGHT WE CHOSE THE HEIR.

Date.

Twenty-four years earlier.

One year before Matteo’s staged death.

Giovanni stared.

“What heir?”

Isabella had said wrong son.

Maybe this was not about criminal loyalty only.

May you like

Maybe Moretti succession had been decided long before Giovanni ever believed leadership fell to him naturally.

And someone had spent twenty years resenting that decision enough to hunt Matteo’s daughter.
