Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT GIOVANNI LEARNED HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO INHERIT

My husband learned at fifty-four that his father never intended him to inherit the family.

He laughed.

Not happily.

“Of course.”

We sat in Detective Price’s office.

Elena.

Me.

Giovanni.

Isabella’s attorney had begun negotiating limited cooperation because age and evidence made certainty expensive.

She wanted protection.

Against Barone.

Interesting.

According to Isabella:

Giovanni’s father, Carlo Moretti, planned to pass leadership to Matteo.

Not Giovanni.

Matteo was older.

Calmer.

Better liked.

Giovanni was considered too reactive.

Too proud.

Too interested in proving fear.

Then Matteo refused.

He had already met Elena.

Wanted out.

Carlo Moretti could accept criminal son.

Dead son.

Not disobedient son.

So he staged Matteo’s death publicly rather than admit heir walked away.

Barone helped.

Isabella helped.

They believed temporary.

Carlo thought Matteo would return after “learning civilian life.”

He did not.

Then Giovanni inherited by default.

I looked at him.

“How do you feel?”

He stared.

“Second choice.”

Honest.

Then laughed.

“At fifty-four.”

Elena said:

“Matteo envied you.”

Giovanni looked.

“What?”

“He thought you were free.”

My husband almost choked.

“Free?”

“You were allowed to be what family wanted.”

“Matteo couldn't.”

“That's not freedom.”

“I know.”

“She smiled sadly.”

“He learned.”

Isabella’s story continued.

Barone never accepted Giovanni.

He kept a shadow network loyal to Matteo’s “rightful line.”

Not because he loved Matteo.

Because Matteo’s absence gave Barone leverage.

If Giovanni failed, Barone could theoretically produce the rightful heir.

But Matteo refused to return.

Later, when Emilia born, Barone saw new possibility.

Bloodline.

Not now.

Future.

A little girl as political asset.

Exactly what terrified Lauren? Myself about Luca.

Elena whispered:

“He called her insurance.”

“Yes.”

Price said.

“Isabella admits she monitored Emilia.”

“Claims no plan to harm.”

“Just preserve.”

I laughed.

“Children are not wine.”

Price almost smiled.

“Agreed.”

Then:

“Why Matteo killed?”

Isabella blamed Barone.

Not personally shooter.

Ordered.

When Matteo decided to contact Giovanni and expose Red Ring shadow network, Barone considered it betrayal.

He feared Matteo would give names, finances, and history.

Barone’s men intercepted.

Anthony helped.

Elena was threatened.

“Proof?”

Price said.

“We have Isabella statements.”

“Old audio fragments.”

“Some financial transfers.”

“Need more for murder charge.”

“Barone currently missing.”

Giovanni stood.

Paced.

Then:

“What did Matteo have?”

“Evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Unknown.”

“Elena?”

She shook.

“Recording you saw.”

“Maybe more.”

“He never told.”

Price said:

“Barone believes more.”

“That is likely why Elena targeted.”

Then one agent entered.

New development.

Barone spotted entering United States under alias six weeks ago.

Current facial recognition from toll camera.

New York.

Then Boston.

My blood went cold.

“When?”

Three days before Emilia appeared at school.

Boston.

Near us.

“Why?”

Unknown.

Luca.

Maybe.

Giovanni’s face changed.

He looked at me.

No old denial.

“I need tell you something.”

My stomach tightened.

“What now?”

“I received call three months ago.”

“From?”

“Unknown man.”

“Content?”

“He asked whether Luca knew Matteo.”

I froze.

“You didn't tell me?”

Giovanni’s face fell.

“No.”

Again.

I stood.

He immediately:

“I know.”

“No.”

“Lauren—”

“You just did same thing.”

“I thought prank.”

“Then why remember?”

“Because it bothered me.”

“Did you increase security?”

“Yes.”

My laugh came ugly.

“Of course.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Not enough.”

“I know.”

“Did Luca know?”

“No.”

“Police?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He had no answer.

There.

Old reflex.

He had improved.

Not cured.

This mattered.

I left room.

No drama.

Hallway.

Breathed.

Elena came out after minute.

“Want me go?”

“No.”

She stood.

“Matteo did same.”

“What?”

“Information.”

“He would tell me ninety percent.”

“Keep ten because he thought he was protecting.”

I stared.

“Did you hate?”

“Yes.”

“Did he change?”

“Not enough.”

That hurt.

Maybe warning.

“Do you think Giovanni can?”

“I don't know.”

Good answer.

I returned.

Giovanni sat.

No excuses.

“New rule,” I said.

He looked.

“No threat stays in your head because you judged it unimportant.”

“Yes.”

“You tell me.”

“Yes.”

“Police if family safety.”

“Yes.”

“Luca if affects him, age-appropriate.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“And if you do this again?”

Silence.

“I leave?”

Not threat from me.

His fear.

I answered honestly:

“I don't know.”

That scared him more.

“Trust does not have infinite automatic renewals.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Good.

We told Luca that evening.

He became furious.

“You knew somebody asked about me?”

“Yes.”

“And didn't tell?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I made wrong decision.”

Luca looked at me.

“Are you mad?”

“Yes.”

“Leaving?”

“No.”

“Maybe?”

“Stop making marriage referendum.”

He smiled faintly despite.

Then looked at father.

“Do you trust me?”

Giovanni frowned.

“Yes.”

“Then why don't you tell me stuff?”

Good.

Giovanni swallowed.

“Because I still think being father means carrying fear first.”

Luca considered.

“I don't need all.”

“No.”

“But if someone asks my name because of dead uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

“I will.”

Then:

“I’m mad.”

“I know.”

“Can I skip dinner?”

“No.”

I interrupted.

Both looked.

“Family consequences do not remove vegetables.”

Luca groaned.

Normal.

We needed.

Next day, Moretti legal team began full disclosure to federal authorities of historical Red Ring network information Giovanni still had.

That was enormous.

Some names belonged to crimes beyond limitation.

Some current corruption.

He did not bargain first.

His lawyer nearly fainted.

“Cooperation agreement before production.”

Giovanni said:

“Fine.”

Process.

He accepted that his old world could cost legitimate businesses, reputation, maybe himself legally.

No guarantee.

Why?

Luca’s question:

What can you do?

This.

Make network less useful by exposing it.

Three business partners resigned.

One bank froze relationship.

News broke:

MORETTI COOPERATES WITH FEDERAL REVIEW OF HISTORIC ORGANIZED-CRIME NETWORK.

Our home surrounded reporters.

Luca hated.

Emilia worse.

Elena panicked.

But no more secret protection.

We told.

Then board of Giovanni’s logistics company demanded temporary leave.

He agreed.

That surprised financial press.

Not me.

He had learned power could be surrendered before force.

Then Barone called again.

This time FBI monitored.

“You gave them names.”

Giovanni:

“Yes.”

“You gave away your father.”

“He is dead.”

“Your brother.”

“He asked me not to start war.”

“You obey dead coward?”

Giovanni’s jaw tightened.

Then:

“Yes.”

Good.

Barone laughed.

“Then I will tell you what Matteo never did.”

“What?”

“He asked me to kill you once.”

The room stopped.

Giovanni’s face went white.

“What?”

Barone continued:

“Before he disappeared.”

“He said only one Moretti son could leave.”

Giovanni shook head.

“Lie.”

“Ask Elena.”

Elena, listening remotely, looked horrified.

“No.”

She mouthed.

Barone laughed.

“You think your brother loved you?”

“He chose himself.”

Call ended.

Trace partial.

New Jersey.

But emotional bomb left.

Giovanni stood.

Elena immediately said:

“He is lying.”

“You don't know.”

“I knew Matteo.”

“So did I.”

“Not those years.”

That hurt.

Giovanni left room.

Not rage.

Collapse.

For first time, danger was not physical.

It was whether Barone could poison a dead brother’s memory enough to turn Giovanni back into man Matteo feared.

I found husband outside later.

He whispered:

“What if true?”

“Then Matteo had a terrible moment.”

“He wanted me dead.”

“If true.”

“How can you say that?”

“Because people are more than worst thought.”

“You taught Luca that.”

He looked at me.

I continued:

“And Barone is choosing timing because he wants you destabilized.”

Giovanni breathed.

“Evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Not story.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Two days later, evidence came.

Old audio recovered from Isabella’s archive.

Matteo speaking to Barone.

Giovanni listened.

Matteo:

“If Gio comes after Elena, I’ll stop him myself.”

Barone:

“Kill your brother?”

Long pause.

Matteo:

“If that is what keeps her alive.”

Silence.

Not exactly Barone’s story.

But not nothing.

Giovanni cried.

Then recording continued:

Barone:

“You could never.”

Matteo:

“No.”

Voice broke.

“I couldn't.”

“That is why I have to leave.”

There.

A desperate brother considering violence to protect someone, then refusing.

Complex.

Human.

Giovanni closed eyes.

“He was afraid of me.”

“Yes.”

“And loved you.”

“Yes.”

Both.

Again.

That night, he took Matteo’s Saint Michael medal from Emilia only when she offered it.

Held.

Then returned.

No claim.

No inheritance.

Just touch.

And said:

“I wish he had come home angry.”

Emilia whispered:

“Why?”

“Because alive and angry is easier than dead and understood.”

My throat closed.

That lesson would matter soon.

Because Salvatore Barone was still alive.

And he had just kidnapped nobody.

Threatened no one.

Instead, he did something smarter.

He went public.

On a national television interview from an undisclosed location, the eighty-year-old former Moretti lieutenant claimed Giovanni had fabricated the Red Ring conspiracy to hide his own crimes.

May you like

And then he announced:

“I have proof Giovanni Moretti ordered his brother’s murder.”
